Arrow He laughed at my car.

    I laugh at my car.
My car is 30yrs old. I DO NOT CARE. I'm riding clean in my Caddy. I've never had a car note because I always get free cars from my dad. Of course, these free cars are never new cars but who cares? I don't have a car note, I have a free mechanic, and my car insurance is only $22.83 a month.

On holidays or days when I go out of town I will stunt and get a rental car.

Anyway. I went to see my friend (sugardaddy, slave, trick, what ever you want to call him...i just show up do a lil roll play and leave with bill money.....long story on this new hustle).

I hate driving to his neighborhood because Hoover police will always pull me over. It must be the rims and tint. The first time I showed up at his house he said "WTF are you driving?!" and had a field day off of how my car looks so out of place in his neighborhood (it really does). When neighbors see my car in the driveway they always call to ask if he is alright.

    I love old Caddies!

The whole car thing is absurd anyway. One of my least favorite attributes of American cultural values.

I used to get shot down in flames all the time for having old cars when I was an artist up in Daytona. Now I can have whatever kind of fucking car I want, and I still drive (not quite so) old cars. I'd rather spend the money going to Europe or something.

What a dick. Your car is none of his business - but if he's THAT concerned about his neighbours - get HIM to buy you a new ride.....!

Well if it's 30 years old - it's most likely to be an Eldorado, a Fleetwood Brougham, a Coupe De-Ville or a Seville. All cool wheels...

I agree, I want to see a photo! LOL

Anyhow, I got into an argument with someone recently who thought I should be "less concerned" with appearances. Basically something on my car needs to be fixed & I've been too busy to be without it for very long, & don't want to be inconvenienced with having to rent a car while mine is in the shop. I really just need to break down & do that though. My friend was saying it was minor & I just shouldn't worry about it. I basically told her that she can say whatever she wants & that while people shouldn't "judge a book by it's cover" the world & business deals are often formed from first impressions. If I have to go meet with someone & they start presuming things that aren't true based off something they saw, that could play against me (losing a business deal for example) & it's not a chance I'm willing to take. I think of it more as a wise business decision to present myself well.

With that said, it's not any of his business what you drive... but stereotypes still exist, people still form opinions based on them, & people need to be aware of that when considering options. OP, think of it as an return on an investment issue. If having a nicer car brought you more high quality clients paying your current rate or more, then it would probably be worth it. However, if you saw the same clients at the same rate regardless of the car, then it wouldn't be worth it... & in reality between the cost of the car with interest, taxes, & insurance, you may simply break even. I don't think he should take issue. If he fusses, I agree to egg him on that he needs to give you money to pay for a new car... in cash & in YOUR name only!

Yeah this is true. As an independent contractor, you can charge a lot more money if you have a nice car than if you drive an old beater. Talent matters far less than image...

Actually my point is that depending on the potential client one or both (image & talent) could matter. For me, I'm not a person that likes to take chances, so I'd rather just have all of my bases covered that way I don't have to worry so much about what they might judge me on when deciding whether or not to do business or be associated with me. Yet, I think this all comes down to personal situations & if the return of investment is "worth it".

By the way, I noticed a typo in the quote, so I'm going back to fix it.

Next time he makes a comment about how your car looks out of place in his neighborhood.....

dress him up in panties and a ball gag, put him on a leash and walk him around the front yard..while whipping him with a riding crop....

Then see if he is ever worried about your car looking out of place in his neighborhood again.

I want to see photos. Personally I've never understand the obsession many have with cars, but yep there are stereotypes. I myself drive a Ford Focus and people have laughed about it but I don't care. I'm almost done paying it off and will keep it until it no longer works. In the past I too got old cars from my mechanic dad. And remember, in a few years it'll be considered classic. My parents have a 1930 Model A Ford and for many years people laughed until the restored it now it's styling.

I have a beater car. It looks nice with the top down lmao But once the top is up it looks like crap. If I have to go to someplace that is in a residential type place I will take a cab if possible, especially if it is more of an upscale neighborhood. Unfortunately most people look at people for what they have. If I met a guy who was driving a crappy car or dressed poorly, I would probably not regard him as a big spender, which is wrong of me to do but it's usually the truth. Yea, but I would tell him that if it bothered him so much he needs to start spending more so you can get a better car.

Tell him to shut up. Sometimes subs try to be pesty or bratty.

    "Don't laugh, it's paid for..."

I have been tempted to buy a "pimp" looking ride as a personal kick, but it's not practical this year. Maybe next...

My Uncle brought a 1972 Ford Country Squire back from the 'States when he returned to the UK. He's still driving it now, and it turns heads everywhere....especially with Ex-Pat American citizens living over here.

That could well be true for you, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I was speaking of the civilian business world in general as far as image goes--especially as an independent contractor, where cars are concerned. You can automatically charge more (like maybe what your talent ought to bring you in a fair market) if you have a nice car.

If the typical businessman looking for a contractor sees a guy pull up in an old beater, he's going to try to cut your price on you because you are supposed to be desperate. Way too many years dealing with cheap motherfucking real estate developers, builders, and architects hammered that point home for me.

But this is verging on threadjack now. Sorry OP.

Dude I want to see pics now, especially if the Caddy's restored. I might cum, for real. I prefer a "black guy/old white woman" car, though, if you know what I mean. Lincolns, Oldies...
http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/2475194492.html NOW I just came for real.

Seriously, though. You drive an old Caddy; therefore, you are awesome.
