    Default hair extensions for dummies??

I searched the other threads, albeit late at night after work, and I didn't find the answers to these hair-extension related questions:

    1. Can the extensions be washed along with your real hair?
    2. Can they be colored? I have red hair, which is hard to match, and I also color it to wipe out some touches of grey around the hairline.
    3. How do you know a good-quality extension when you find it?
    4. how long do they stay in?
    5. How much can I reasonably expect to pay?
    6. Do they damage the real hair?
    7. How long dies the real hair have to be to hold the extensions?

There are a lot of different types of hair extensions...
    http://www.haironthebrain.com/2010/0...ir-extensions/

In general, any extension that's real hair can be washed, conditioned, coloured, heat-styled, etc. so long as you avoid the part that connects the hair to your head (the bond or rubbing the tracks). Good quality extensions are real human hair, stay in for about 3 months (unless they're clip-ins, then they come out at the end of the night), cost $200-$2000+ and are well-made (attached to the bonds well, sewn-in wefts well). Your hair doesn't have to be that long for extensions, maybe a few inches, but you'll want to get them cut to blend in with your natural style.

For a beginner I'd suggest going with clip-ins to try out the look. I don't use these anymore so I can't really recommend where to purchase them but a lot of girls make them at home using clips/wefts and they look as good/better than the ones you can buy pre-made.

Another good beginner extension style is microtubes/hair locs, which you can easily buy online and apply yourself. I buy mine at http://www.medusaaustralia.com.au/page.asp?i=2 and dye/apply them at home, there are tons of videos on youtube showing you how to do it. These are, in my opinion, minimally damaging to your hair (all extensions damage!) and then just need to be cut into a style. Again, in my opinion they blend better with my chin-length hair than anything else.

I'm sure you'll have more questions once you decide which method is best for you

Yes, extensions can be washed along with your real hair... however... most have specific care instructions that you should definitely follow.

Human hair can be colored... however it does a great deal of damage to lower quality hair... so don't dye anything that's not good quality.

I recommend running a search and peering through suggestions by other members on extensions to find good quality ones. There've been a few discussions on this.

How long they stay in depends on what method you have them put in with. It can be a few weeks... it can be a few months.

Prices can vary from a few hundred to a few thousand... it depends on what you want done. Obviously, having the woman up the block sew in a few sections is going to be cheaper than having microlinks done. lol.

Yes. They typically damage the real hair. BUT It can be very minimal depending on the type of installation.

Your hair doesn't have to be long at all to hold extensions. But certain lengths definitely blend with extensions and look more natural than others.

sorry to threadjack, but i figured i'd ask on here instead of starting a whole other thread. what are the best clip in hair extensions? i'm looking for platinum blonde (#613 is too yellow) and real hair clip in extensions. i've been looking at headkandy, foxylocks, and different ones on ebay.
