Well..I have the exact opposite of you I can't keep weight on, too thin, hyperthryroid.
Anyway, one thing I've heard is really good with weight loss, The Gycemic Index I don't know it's author.
I was on some medicine Cytomel, this was awhile ago, & for me I'm not sure it did a lot, however I was also on a few other meds at that time.
For me, I don't need exercise to lose weight, but yes I need to tone, & also it helps me with stress management, which in turn affects weight. I've been taking walks (not so much this week since I started working) & doing extensive gardening, which I enjoy both of them, so try to get started in something that you at least enjoy somewhat, not just repetitive exercise.
I wanted to say a few more things, but I am tired, & will come back & do that.
Wishing you the best, don't get discouraged, it can be managed.

tldr version: Thanks whirlez!! Sorry that you have to go through it; my SO has hyperthyroidism so I can kind of relate. He can't gain weight for the life of him.
My SO has the opposite problem as me too. It's so weird because my under active thyroid makes me put on weight easily and be really fatigued and sleep a lot, and my SO's over active thyroid makes him an insomniac and he eats 10x more than me and he can't gain weight. I would hate to be an insomniac, but I would switch with someone who has hyperthyroid any day, just because of the weight thing. Anyways, thanks for the advice ... I'm just not sure if it will work, because I've heard it's really hard to lose weight with hypothyroidism, so I don't want to put in all of this work for nothing. Plus, I suffer from extreme fatigue, and I can easily sleep 15-17+ hours at night (although, I have my SO wake me up when I sleep past 4 or 5). So yeah, right now, I just need to focus on eating right because my sleepiness is really bad and I'm exhausted really easily, so exercise is kind of out of the question right now. I also have anemia due to low iron, which also causes fatigue, but that's my fault because I don't eat enough vegetables. The only thing that really gives me enough energy and motivation to exercise is adderall, but I'm afraid to ask my Dr. to give me a prescription for it because she'll probably say no anyway since it's considered a class A drug.

I also suffer from hyperthyroidism(Graves Disease). Its horrible and I'm tired constantly. But an thyroid disorder can be put simply as saying our hormones our out of wack on a constant basis! Although men do suffer from this disease aswell I think it has a bigger effect on women because of the part it plays with the pitutary gland. These 2 things are must function properly if u want to achieve homeostasis within the body.
They control our hormones, metabolism,> weight loss or gain, fatigue, insominia, etc... and the outcome (atleast in my case) and without med's is 1 sick chick! But with medication and a healthy lifestyle I feel 1000x better! When I take vitamins I feel like superwoman! There is a ton of info out there about Thyroid Disorders. You should educate yourself as much as possible so u can try to control your symptoms. And definitly see an Endocronologist so u can have the proper blood test drawn.
Sorry for any typos and bad grammer.

I'm constantly tired and sick too, and I lack motivation. For awhile, I thought I was ADD because of the mood changes, like low motivation and depression. The symptoms are similar to HIV, so I got tested for that too, and thank god the results came back negative. Which vitamins do you take?

I would try B-complex vitamins, & C vitamins also, would help w/energy. Also check out vitaminshoppe.com, & they have regular stores, I got some great vit.C there not too expensive with other vitamins in it Good luck! It's a difficult thing to deal with. I do have some depression, so I get that part.

Ohhhh girl GO get those tests!!! I had a lot of the same symptoms as you (tired, fatigued constantly, easy weight-gain, difficult weight-loss, slight depression). Get you vitamin B12 levels checked as well, when I went in for tests 2 months ago my doctor checked iron, b12, and thyroid hormones, turned out I had low vitamin b12 and slightly low thyroid hormones. So basically I have mild hypothyroidism, I take meds for it, but they are only a very low dose. Anyways, I noticed after I started taking the synthroid meds and b12 supplements my energy and happiness increased drastically over the next month, I noticed a difference even after 2 weeks. Before I started them I could sleep for 10 hours and still feel tired, and now I'm a normal person again lol. As for weight loss...I wish I could figure that one out, even with the cleanest diet and excersise I still struggle to get down to a decent weight. If you do have hypothyroid, or even just have that body type that puts on weight easily, you just have to accept that 1) weight loss is harder for you: you can't get away with eating the same things as everyone else if you want to be slim, and 2) Despite your best efforts, you might not ever get to be slim. That being said, you never know until you try! Just try to keep as clean a diet as possible, and if they put you on meds, the increased energy should give you more motivation to work out, good luck!

I was prescribed both Vitamin B and Iron. I just need to pick them up from the pharmacy. And thanks for the website! I thought they would be expensive, but they're dirt cheap and free shipping over $25. I'm definantly going to order some medication with Vitamin C. I need my energy back! I love love love love this site.Especially the fact that they have catagories for health concerns. I'm trying to be more healthy, so I like this option.
They told me I have to wait for 3 months to get the tests. I'm not quite sure why. And I already had my Vitamin B12 levels checked and they were low, but I have to go get the prescriptiion for it. I'm so glad to hear that your energy and happiness increased. This is really affecting my life, and makes me extremely lazy.
Also, I am considered to be slim, but I'm not as skinny as I used to be. I used to be stick thin, and now I have curves, but I want my old body back. It might just be age and not eating like I'm supposed to. I might try metabolism medication or something and see how it works. I can't not be slim ... it would make me miserable. I was so skinny when I was like 15, and I didn't have to try. I'm 20 now and I definantly have an ass and boobs, but I'm going to try a sushi/organic/healthy diet and see if it helps me out. I hope the meds give me the energy to work out. The sad part is; I haven't picked up my meds because I'm too tired to even do that. But I'm going to force myself to on Tuesday of this week. Thanks for sharing your story! It really helped me! I guess people with low thyroid levels are just going to have a harder time losing weight, even on medication, which sucks, but I'll just have to work really hard when I get my energy back. Anyways, sorry for the ramble.

Hyper and Hypothyroidism is very common. I used to work in a pharmacy for years and it was one of the most commonly prescribed drug. Everyone I knew who took the meds soon lost the weight, including a very good customer of mine. He was always tired and gained a lot of weight 30 years ago. He recently had a fainting spell which led him to the ER, and they diagnosed him, got him on meds and he lost 50 lbs, he looks really good now! If you have hypothyroidism and have gained weight over the years and have not changed ur diet or habits, then you should really get tested and then take the medicine, you will def lose weight. (if that is really what you have, but only tests can show that)
Do you have implants? I read a few articles that says that 35% of women who have implants will develop a thyroid disorder and gain weight. They lost the weight following the removal of the implants.

Well I take Omega3(fish oil) my thyroid med's, since this disease gives me a rapid heartbeat I take Atenonol, pluse a womens vitamin that's high in the B vitamins as well vitamins for beauty. Get those vitamins and drink plenty of water. In 2 weeks u will feel like your old self again!

I wish I could say you'll lose all the weight, but I won't lie.
My cousin and I both have Hypothyroidism-she hasn't lost all the weight and neither have I. Don't get me wrong-we both lost SOME of the weight, but about half of it has stayed.
IDK if you've ever read any of my posts about weight loss or whatever, but I exercise with a personal trainer twice a week, and the other three days I work out on my own. I am also a very healthy eater and have had a nutritionist for the past couple years, as well as being supervised by a doctor. BUT, I still am heavier than when I got Hypo (I got it after my daughter was born, almost 4 years ago).
I can't speak for what my cousin does, but she tells me she still hasn't been able to lose any weight, even after going on the medicine.
Some people lose it all, some don't. I hope you can!
