OK - so he told them that he found it in a different place - but honestly, there really is no gratitude in the World any more. Not only was he fined - he wasn't even offered a reward......

Don't lie to the police.
ridiculous!
yeah, but I think that's why, in such a large situation, you have to do it anonymously. I think there's been cases like this before....
I wish I knew what I was doing...
God, it's like the people who sue someone for accidentally breaking a rib while saving them from choking... I fucking hate ingratitude. Who cares where he found it? He gave it back. He shouldn't have lied about it but it was a harmless lie, told only to make the situation easier. Did it affect the fact that they got their money back? Did he steal any? If not, I see no damn need to be all "Respect the police, peon!" Fuck, if that was me, all that fine would have done is teach me the lesson that the next time I find money, to not return it to the rightful owner because I'll be punished if I make the slightest harmless mistake in how I go about it. Christ...

reminds me of this time when I was 6 me and my mom were at the grocery store and a woman in her forties left one of her bags at the checkout so I ran after her halfway to the parking lot screaming "ma'am! ma'am!" and gave her back her bag when I caught up to her. when I handed her the bag with a big smile she was just like "oh." I just remember the feeling of pure shock when I didn't even get a "thanks"

Ugh, I know. This has happened to me too. It makes me not want to do anything nice for anyone ... I'm always super appreciative when someone does something nice for me, and I'll keep saying "thank you" until they leave. I'd rather be over-appreciative than make someone feel bad for doing something nice for me.
^^ Ugh... yep. I tapped a girl on the shoulder once to tell her that 20 bucks was just about to fall out of her back pocket. She not only looked super annoyed when I got her attention, but she just proceeded to fix her money and whip her head back around, without so much as eye contact or a single word to me afterward... I could have easily just snatched that money without her feeling it - and after that, I wished I had.
