NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law

ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Interesting. Did you read that somewhere? I didn't. Hmm... oh well, I'll just say motorcycles are bad and if you ride them, even with proper gear, you will wind up paralyzed.

Even with the "proper gear", life is dangerous and you will die at some point.

I wear a full face helmet, jacket, kevlar jeans, leather boots and gloves every time I ride. To me it's just not worth the risk of preventable head injury or lovely looking road rash and I couldn't care less about looking like a badass.

Having said that though...I don't feel it's appropriate to impose my standards on anyone else. It's just nanny state crap. In helmet law states a lot of riders wear non-DOT certified lids (with a fake sticker) that don't offer any measure of protection anyway. Hardly anyone wears full gear...you got cruiser guys with full leather and no helmet and squids with a $500 Shoei in a cutoff, shorts and flip flops. I wish there was a better culture of wearing appropriate gear, but that's not something that can be legislated. If people were really concerned about motorcycle safety the laws for holding a drivers license would be much more stringent because the #1 hazard for bikers by far is shitty drivers who take one test and then by divine right have a license for life.

So anyway this guy probably looks stupid as hell and a case of Darwinism at it's finest, but people die doing stupid shit every day. That or they slowly kill themselves making poor choices.

I have a buddy who has raced motorcycles since he was 8 yrs old...he races on ice, dirttrack, enduro(woods, creeks, fields etc)...been nationally ranked in each at one time or another in his life. He owns a motorcycle dealership and has access to 50 bikes whenever he feels like riding.........which is never.

He says riding on the streets is FAR too dangerous. He calls it stupid. Riding 90 mph on ice bumping another rider heading into a turn.......apparently that is fine.

But the numerous memorial services and funerals that he goes to.....none of them are for his racing friends.....they are for his customers.
