Default Help! Are my highlights dated?

Just got some highlights done and my hairdresser sliced them instead of weaving them. I'm worried I look like it's 1999. I'm attaching pics in dim and bright lighting. Ignore all the hair below my nose; my shitty webcam makes it look like my hair is blue black at the ends.

I would recommend getting highlights that are in between the two shades you have now, in addition to your existing highlights. Or you could always get lowlights, which will make your existing highlights look more natural.

This. I would also try to get your $$$ back, your stylist should have known better and you shouldn't have to pay if she doesn't.

I have a feeling my stylist knew better (I've seen him do some great color on others, mostly blondes though) but wanted to stick with a style that was easier to do at the expense of appearance. My hair has been dyed dark so many times that the ends lift extremely slowly while the upper part lifts pretty quickly, and I imagine it's much easier to control chunky slices of color than fine highlights. Except my roots are still lighter than the ends. I'm sure there are stylists out there who are willing to put in the effort, though. I seriously wouldn't mind paying a ton of money and sitting in a chair for hours at this point! I just need to find a good one. Firemaiden's hair always looks beautiful so I'm going to make an appointment with hers.

I wish I had the balls to ask for my money back, but I was seeing this guy for over a year and we have a friendly relationship (I have his personal number and so on). I'll just cut my losses and move on.

Girlfriend, I had been going to the same stylist for over a year and one day she fucked my hair up(like yours I think she got lazy/cocky)........ I was her FB friend too and I told her exactly what she could do with herself.

It's so hard finding a good stylist, it's like playing Russian roulette every time you try one out for the first time. Next time you see a person with gorgeously-styled hair go up to them and ask them who they go to.

Honestly, I don't like it. I hate the look of blonde highlights on dark hair. I think highlights should blend in with your all-over hair color and if it doesn't, it looks tacky, in my personal opinion.

I do think it's dated. You could get some blending or maybe add a toner to warm up the blond?

Ya, probably time for a new stylist. I do think they have a shelf-life, unfortunately.

She should have done a proper consultation with you to find out what kind of highlights you wanted. But if it helps, lately I have been doing plenty of sliced highlights because the clients are asking for them again. I personally prefer the look of the weaved ones but things do come back.

I'm going to see if anyone in the area can do balayage or subtle ombre, and if not I might just go back to my guy and ask him to dye the streaks back to my base color free of charge. I feel like highlights aside from those on dark hair will look cheap so I may as well settle for one dimensional again; it might not be great but at least it's not bad. What do you guys think?

One color is prettiest, but I also like blonde highlights on already light hair.

I think they look fine. If my mom was here (stylist) she'd probably agree with what firemaiden04 said (3rd post).

Solved, did some ombre. Except that's probably outdated too, as evidenced by the fact that it's trickled down from celebs to me. I like it though.

You could try using a darker toner to tone down the highlights to match your hair naturally for a cheaper way yourself. You could add all over highlights in a similar shade which would bend them in and add more volume, but then you will need to find another stylists and pay more.

I did some ombre highlights (she started about 1 1/2 inches from my roots) with some balayge also. She just used watered down bleach, and it came out copper red, since my hair is naturally almost black. I am going back Thursday for more and to try to get it lighter! I am going for that non highlighted, sunkissed natural looks, like the Victorias Secret models, no obvious highlighted pieces, just blended.

I'm excited for us J.D.! I'm going for the same look as you are and I also need to go back in a week or two for my stylist to perfect it. I'm medium/dark brown on the roots and kind of a dark strawberry on the ends now. It looks alright, but I can't wait for the ends to get to a sandy light brown. It's crazy how much lighter the ends are than the roots without it looking completely obvious. Anyway, keep me updated about your process!

Honestly, I dont like them either, they look from the early 90's. Talk to that stylist and tell him how dissapointed you are.

Here's a couple pics of the inbetween stage. Still brassy, but getting there (I think). I'm just waiting until my ends don't feel so horrible.

Much mucho better. The first set looked too phony/amateur. The updated set looks more classy and natural. They reminded me of some of my first sets with auburn hair with #30 extension highlights. No way in hell they blended. I look back and well hell I was 19/20.
Thank Goodness I smartened up! The old me is dead and gone.

I was looking back at other pictures of my old highlights and they were like a golden set of insect legs on my head. You can kind of see it in the last picture. I totally want to ask for my money back by sending this thread to the guy who did it.
