You will have no way of knowing how bad it hurts on your ribs until you're actually in the chair getting them tattooed. Some people say it's terrible, but in my experience there is also a percentage of people who get their ribs done who sit like a rock and don't find it to be that bad at all. Out of this group of a people, the majority of them tend to be women, so you might just be one of the lucky ones.....

    For me:
Normal tattoos are like a 0-1 on the pain scale... my ribs were like an 8/I nearly threw up from pain.

Oh. And they're fuckin' bad... lol @ trying a new artist out for rib tattoos. So I have to get them covered.

I suppose it depends WHERE on your ribs... mine basically run along ribs from back to front and certain areas were worse than others.

I should also add that the factors that mostly influence how painful any tattoo will be are: exact placement, your physical state and preparation, the nature of the tattoo, and very importantly, your tattoo artist's technique. Some artists are notoriously heavy handed, while others have a very soft approach.

To swing the odds in your favor, you want to be well rested, super well fed, getting a delicate black and grey tattoo, rendered by a light handed artist.

^It's not impossible to sit through... even when it's STUPID painful because you picked a bad artist and he's DRILLING at your side like mine. LOL
I've got 2 tattoos on the front of my ribs, 1 in the back and one on the side... none of them were bad BUT the side. FOR ME. For you... it could be the opposite, you never really know...

Just make sure you pick something you REALLY WANT... enough that it's worth it to sit through if it's a tender spot on you, too.

I have a little tattoo on my wrist and a big piece down my ribs (from the top of my shoulder, down my side to my hip bone) and the latter definitely hurt more, greatly in part due to how much longer it took and how little fat there is in that area. For me, the worst was right on the ribs, like right under the shoulder blade to around the breast. Like DD said, if it's something you really want, then you'll be able to sit through it. Bring a friend as a distraction!

My rib tattoo was a little spicy pain-wise but very enjoyable. A 3 on a scale from 1-10.

My buddy owns his own shop & he said that rib cage tattoos tend to be the worst areas on most people. I've also been told just like AngelKing that women will handle the pain alot better usually.

I know that I'm not supposed to, but I plan on cheating alittle when I go to get mine done. Eat a meal, pop a vicodin & then go get worked on. Should help at least alittle.

    Good Luck!

Mine is more towards my stomach, but it still hurt. At least it started to hurt at the end.
Especially up under the boob and down toward the hip.

I was doing fine, but the longer the tattoo went on, the more it started to hurt. I guess I just get bored and then actually start THINKING about how much it hurts lol.

They all hurt. It varies from person to person. I found that while he was on my actual rib cage it hardly hurt at all. Fat hurts considerably more for me. For my sister it was the exact opposite. You won't know until you have it done.

Every piece costs you. Pain, blood, you pay in someway. If it's important to you the cost is always worth it. I'm heavily tat'd. I'd do them all again in a second.

    Pain is relative.

For me, tattoos are pure bliss.

I have a large one that pretty much covers my right rib cage, i would not describe it has a painful experience.

However, the parts of the tattoo that were not one my rib cage, but rather the fleshy areas of my stomach- absolutely off the charts of the pain scale. Make me think that bellybutton tattoos have to be the worst.

It wasn't the ribs that hurt for me it was once he got to my hip (like the part above your butt) I couldn't stop shaking.

I wish I could be those types that enjoy pain, but I'm not. At one point I dreamed of having my whole back done, but after getting a few tattoos, I know that will never be. I do plan to get more, but just small ones.

I have a full ribcage piece and that was the most excrutiating pain I've ever felt in my life, seriously. I have both arms sleeved as well, and a full back piece. I recommend taking a norco or something and trying a topical numbing agent at least an hour before the tattoo, cover it with saran wrap after you put the cream on so it soaks in real good. You can see my ribcage piece in my background pic on twitter @emilyparkerxxx
