    Default dancing injuries

so i've been dancing almost 3 weeks and i think i've injured something. i go to the dr later on today. i honestly can't dance in the heels to save my life. my feet and my knees are killing me. its so bad that i'm contemplating asking the house mom to take me off schedule for the next 2 weeks. my body isn't bad but physically i can tell than i wasn't prepared. i always make sure to stretch before or during my first set as its slow when we start. i'm curious what types of injuries have you guys developed from dancing. i hear alot of the girls at the club talking about there back, hips, knees. i know its a part of the job but is there so type of way to try and combat it.

This is normal, your body just has to toughen up to it. Also the taller the shoes -the bigger the platform the less your feet hurt. Although, this may not work for you until you get used to your heels. As for the back, knees & feet -this is normal, this phase will pass in time. Try soaking in a hot bath w/; lots of Epsom salt when you get home. Also Ice-E-Hot & Tigerbalm on your muscles will help a good deal (just make sure not to put it on right before or after a bath/shower).

Lol! Just wait until you start trying to do poletricks & you see all the bruises that come w/ it. Hahah! You'll learn in time, girl.

If you feel that way continuously for more than a few days, it might be a problem. Otherwise, it's probably normal. I went through a phase for the first month or so that I danced, where I was completely incapacitated after a couple shifts, and just wanted to lie around and sleep all day because my body hurt. But I got used to it, and now dancing is just like any old workout... might feel a little bit "tight" or sore afterward, but I can still go about my day.

It's good that you've been stretching... that's really important. If you don't already, you should also massage your feet and legs when you get home. And taking a warm bath is a good idea.

Let us know how the doctor's visit goes... I hope you don't have a serious injury! The most common injuries I've seen are with the knees... mostly from girls getting right on their knees to do floor work. Avoid this if you can, it's *so* bad for you!

Just to keep your body in tip top shape I've gone to a chiropractor for many years. Nothing too regularly, just a couple times per year. I used to have knee problems after my first two years dancing but after the chiropractor nothing. It's really been amazing because there were days I could barely walk up stairs and I was only 22!

I adore Bikram yoga -that is if you can handle the heat. Many people can't -but it's such a great sweat!

I can see that. Must be hell. I have dreads -so it just takes forever for my dreads to dry or not smell like sweat. Ew!

I'm glad your doc gave you the ok. I'm the queen of dance related (and snowboard, surf and running) injuries

(Threadjack): I worked w/ a fair skin white girl who has dark almost grey-black dreads w/ subtle metallic silver woven through. It's very hot and she's tallish and thin, so she reminds me of a white Avi. (The blue Avatar people).
