Default How did you get started dancing?

This may be a newb question, but I was a dancer before, loved doing it, but I quit and now I have a pretty much 7-5 job. My huge confusion is how to go about getting into the dance industry if you already have a job. Do you start dancing on the side and eventually quit your job, or do you just save up enough money to keep yourself for a few months, then quit? The problem is that I work all day and go in really early so dancing would be almost impossible keeping my current job unless I would be falling asleep at work every day, and I know working weekends starting off won't happen with no club experience. Also, I know when I get started I might not be making as much money as I am now, at least until I get some experience. So how did most dancers go about this? Thanks and sorry if this was in another post, I couldn't find anything in the search engine.

What about working on weekend dayshifts? If you do well on those for a while, they should bump you up to Friday nights. But a lot of clubs I've worked at don't care if you come in on a weekend night when new, so don't write that off immediately. You should go in and ask.

I eventually quit my day job. I was getting no sleep, it became too much, and I made more money dancing. Plus the benefit of making your own schedule.

    I prefer working day-shift.

I would highly recommend to keep your day job and strip when you can. having a regular job will keep you grounded. I quit my day job when I started dancing and now I wish I still had it! I could have just cut down my hours :[

unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY need to make thousands of dollars FAST, I'd keep your 7-5.

I kept my day job at first, and worked Wed, Fri and Sat. Thursdays were AWEFUL on 3 hours of sleep (3am-6am) but its do-able.

    Man,

I'm so glad for this site. Started dancing in high school.

A lot of people strip on the side of regular jobs. So go in and ask the club what they could do with your schedule. But I wouldn't quit the 7-5 job right off the bat. I started stripping while still working another job and going to school. I would be up at 8am for class, go to school until 3:45, rush to my regular job from 4-8, run home, grab my car and have to be ready to go onstage at 9. It was a pain, but it's do-able... for awhile. I went with it for 4 months until the season ended at my other job and I decided not to continue.

I started doing contests and amateur nights at local clubs in cities not too far from where I lived. The cool thing about doing contests is that you don't have to work a full shift and if you win, the money is pretty good... anywhere from $300 on up. I did contests for almost a year before I started dancing full time.

My first shift was a Sunday afternoon, and I'm working day-shifts this weekend as well. The Manager wants me to do at least four day shifts to get used to how it all works. He even suggested to me that if I wanted to pull a double shift and work an evening this Sunday I could do it (don't know if I'll be able to pull it off physically so soon, but who knows, at least I have the option). So I guess working day/night shifts at the beginning just depends on how good you're doing and the club you're working at.

Who says they won't let you work weekends? This isn't like a regular job that you have to work your way up. Usually, you can work whenever you want. They may only put you on day shift, though.

I started dancing when I had another job and although it was tiring I found it good to have the guaranteed money from my other job whilst I was new dancing. It really took the pressure off when I was dancing and meant that I could learn and not feel stressed to need to make a certain amount of money per shift.

I'd recommend not quitting your other job at the start. Dancing is not for everyone and can take a little while to get used to. When I realised it was something I was good at I quit my other job and now I'm just dancing and studying.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

@ those who questioned why I said I assumed I couldn't work weekends off the bat, I posted a thread a while ago about how I think I can only work weekends bc of my job and I was told by the repliers that I would have to suck it up, pay my dues and work the bad weekday shifts to earn weekend shifts, long story short. Maybe in some clubs this is true? Either way, the best way to find out how a particular club works as far as scheduling it would probably be best to just go ask the club itself lol.

But @ all, thanks so much for the replies, it makes sense to keep both jobs for a little bit

I do hair full time and my boss was keeping like half of my earnings!!! I needed money and danced approximately one shift at the shittiest club in Texas, I'm sure. That was 2 years ago and I've got dancing on my brain again.

I waitressed for two shifts in July but the combo of wearing tights and close toed heels cracked my toenails and they literally had to be removed

I wanna go back and dance there, I plan to go I'm next week and talk to the manager

Phase 1: I snuck a little dancing in intitially. Kept full time day job.

Phase 2: I worked half time dancing / half time day job.

Phase 3: Danced almost full time while keeping light hours at day job( mostly as a cover for my dancer travel ).

Phase 4: Small break from sex work at beginning of 2011 and now about half and half again!
