Default What did you believe/assume as a kid that was brutally...

revealed to be false as an adult?

For me, it was the eventual realization that doing everything right, as in school, doesn't always result in things like promotions, etc. It's as important to take risks and play political games than it is to keep your head down and simply produce results.

That a lot of what they teach us in school from an early age is bullshit, and they KNOW it's bullshit, but they teach it anyways. Like Columbus. He did not discover America, he never set foot on North America, he found Hispanola and thought it was literally the coast of India. He was an idiot and all his colleagues knew he was wrong. What's more, he was a mean, mean guy and basically committed genocide in the islands. So then why are we taught in elementary school that he discovered America, and why are we made to color pictures of this nice, pleasant-looking person while singing songs about how great he was?

Another thing that always pissed me off is how high schools really give you seriously incorrect information about college, and the importance of college. They act like if you enroll in a community college you'll end up drunk in a gutter somewhere. I was also told that in college I will never have time for anything else because for every hour I spend in class, I'll have at least three hours of studying. Which means that, for me right now, taking 18 credits this fall will mean that I will be studying for 54 hours a week. That's such an epic load of bullshit I don't even know where to begin. And they don't want you to get degrees in humanities anymore...it's all about communications and computer science and business and all of that. And when I made it clear I wanted to get my degree in humanities, I was strongly, strongly discouraged, to the point where they tried to force me to change it. And now, there's this weird backlash against intellectuals. They want corporate businesspeople, they want CEO's and Marketing Directors. They don't want you to have an expertise in the humanities. And now, of course, a Bachelor's is worthless. An MA is the new BA. And they STILL don't want me to become a History teacher. It's fucking bullshit.

Firemaiden, I hear ya......Keep fighting the power and get the degree in what YOU want to to do. Instead of being a history major I got an M.S. in Engineering, and I was never happy with that decision until I transitioned into something else.

Yep. As a kid I was told that hard work equalled success. So I got great grades, I went to college and graduate school. All for what? I haven't become a CEO or even an upper manager. Oh sure eventually I'll become a department head, but probably not more than that sadly.

I learned that things are never what they seem. I've found out many years later that many of my classmates didn't have the lives I thought they did. One wasn't her dad's biological child, conceived as a result of a swinging affair. Another was raped by her dad.

When I was a kid, I believed there is a god that could perform super-natural miracles.

Mommy and Daddy don't really know what's best. In fact, they don't know much at all.

I thought sex was kissing, just under the sheets. Not a blanket or a comforter but sheets. I was weird
