    Default knees & floorwork

recently my knees have taken some bad hits against the floor. i'm trying to not bang them around as much now by doing more deliberate movements. now they are just tender. i've tried using a mat under them it made things a lot easier for awhile, but i don't know if my mat is getting flat (maybe i need to add more cushion to it). does anyone have advice on how to place your knees to avoid or take some of the pressure off of the knees. i've been looking at some of the girls an it looks sorta like they place there knees to the side (not all but certain ones). i place my mine just straight down as i'm not extremely flexible at the moment but i don't think that's right either.

I think that however you place your knees, especially on the stage rail, they're going to get banged up for a while. After a few weeks, they should get used to the abuse and stop bruising and being tender. That's what happened to me anyway. At first my knees were literally purple, my whole knee, for the first couple of weeks and then my body got used to the movements and stopped bruising as badly. I think you should do whatever feels best and is sexy. But a suggestion: if you are on the tip rail, instead of sitting on your knees, squat on top of it or sit on your ass with your legs open...? If you are on the floor, try to balance the weight back more on your hands and feet.

Permanently blackened? From the toughening of the skin? I've never heard of this...?

I just started dancing about a month ago. Although they aren't as sore after my shift as they were when I first started, I've noticed that there's a small circle of tough skin (on each knee) that is darker than the rest (from doing floor work). I was curious about the same thing.

Exfoliate and mosturizing is very important. Use a mixture of baking soda/lemon juice to exfoliate the knees and prevent skin buildup. The lemon juice doubles as a skin bleach. Mosturize well because dry knees will also appear dark. Also cut a lemon in half and rub each half on each knees for 5-10 min every other day. hth!

Leg warmers/stocking help with this. Actually, I've worked with several girls who will use thin kneepads inside of their legwarmers--and you really can't tell that they are there.
Otherwise, your knees will eventually 'toghen up'. By age 23 I had effusion of both of my knees so now I really don't feel anything, lol.

Before going to bed after a night shift I put some arnica on my knees. When I wake up they feel less tender. And they do toughen up after a while.

Most of the dancing I do is floorwork. What I have learned to do is stay off my knees as much as possible. WHen I am on the floow I try to keep most of my weight on my feet. Ill arch backwards onto my back squeezing my boobs, I do little mini flips(backwards flips), the puss shot which is on my feet completely etc. I get up alot and stay on my feet slowly moving around when I am not doing any pole tricks. I do this to preserve my knees as much as possible. But I do remember being new and how much my body hurt. Ur body builds a resistance to it. Sometimes though u have to make a huge mental effort to take it easy on ur body while dancing. My body is a temple and it must be preserved is my point of view.

Arnica, and also epsom salt baths.

Stay off your knees as much as possible.

You can kinda get into more of a frog bend, where your knees are kinda sideways, but that puts a lot of pressure on the joint.

Stay off the kneecap as much as possible. Like, when you're just sitting like on a chair and your knees are bent, you can see the kneecap. Then there is a more flat area below the kneecap. Try to stay on this part of your knee.

I do a lot of floorwork. Your knees will toughen up, but treat them as gently as possible.
