    Default Is "Stripper" degrading?

I was reading through my pole dance site forums for the first time in awhile and thought I would read a thread about a girl wondering if she should trying stripping. The first response was from someone who claims to be a dancer herself, and the very first thing she said was if you're going to do it, don't call yourself a stripper. She said there's nothing wrong with the word itself, but the way it's used nowadays, there is - you're just degrading yourself when you call yourself a "stripper" so don't do it. She even said that the management at her club gets angry at the dancers if they use the word...

I really don't understand how "stripper" is degrading. And I've never heard of anyone, especially a fellow dancer, thinking that's it's wrong to call oneself a stripper rather than "exotic dancer." I would have understood this mentality on my pole dance website if this woman was just doing it for fun and exercise, as I know that a lot of women like that like to make it clear that they're NOT strippers... but this woman claims to be a stripper for 5+ years.

Do you guys think it's degrading to use the word "stripper" - or do you know anyone who thinks it's wrong? What sort of "negative connotations" are associated with this word that aren't associated with "exotic dancer?" I mean, really?

    Nope, I'm a stripper.

...and at times I enjoy taking in the looks of shock, confusion and disdain when I do tell people what I do for a living.

It's a peculiar facial expression; it reads something like "I find that morally outrageous but I will not show my displeasure for fear the stripper will drug me or beat me". Looks much like someone sucking on a lemon. Hilarious.

Not that I go around shouting what I do from the hilltops, but when it comes up in a conversation....

I use stripper. A friend of mine uses Dancer. My DJ at my home club calls us Showgirls (it's a Deja Vu). I really don't care. I take off my clothes and get nude for a living and dance while doing it.

Girls who have a problem calling themselves strippers always make me laugh. It's what I do. I take my clothes off for money. No reason to call it anything else.

In Australia there was a race horse a few years ago named "Stripper." To get a horse named, the proposed name can't be considered degrading or socially unacceptable. So I say, if STRIPPER is acceptable to the Australian Jockey Club, it's fine for polite conversation.

Nothing wrong with being called a stripper. Sure it can be demeaning but so is working at a fast food joint making minimum wage.

I don't understand why girls take offense to being called a stripper. Often when I refer to myself as a stripper, guys correct me and say that I'm an exotic dancer. I'm like nope... I'm definitely not a dancer... and make some joke about how terrible I am on stage to prove the fact that I'm not what one would call an exotic dancer and that stripper most definitely will suffice in my case. This tactic usually gets them to notice when I'm on stage and tip me while informing I am wrong about my dancing ability...

I don't think the word is degrading but I always thought of the job as entertainer because there is more to the job than taking your clothes off.

I prefer the word dancer, but if you're a stripper and can't call yourself a stripper, well that's just funny. My husband used to be offended by the word even though he met me a dancer, er, stripper, and I'm still one now. I was like "If I'm okay with the word then you should be too," and he is more now.

The thing is, I feel kind of fraudulent saying oh I'm a dancer. I personally KNOW a dancer, and she's taken a lifetime of dance classes, majored in dance at college and now earns a living teaching ballet. Now THAT'S a dancer!

I'm a stripper. I make most of my money taking my clothes off. My actual dancing and pole skills are pretty middle of the road. My roomie in college right now is a dance major and she is super amazing. Usually, girls who don't like being called a "stripper" have their own issues with the job or they have amazing dance/pole skills that they want recognized.

any stripper who is offended by the term 'stripper' should probably be in a different line of work.

seriously, its what we do. if you need to fucking sugar coat it, you are obviously ashamed of it. and when push comes to shove, you should not do things that you are ashamed of.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

i use stripper or dancer, but i find that people like tyra banks like to use stripper as like...a way to categorize people who are slightly less awful than mass murderers. so i suppose it's the context.

^Apparently a man left her for a stripper once - so she hates us all for it. That's what I read in some tabloids anyway, so it could be completely accurate or totally off base.

yeah, we've discussed it here many times! it's people like her that i feel are using stripper as synonymous with baby-killer. and that's when it makes me uncomfortable.

"if a stripper is an exotic-dancer then a drug dealer is an exotic-pharmacist"

I think it depends on how it's used. When I use the term "dancer" it will be in a more formal setting like in a cab on the way to the club. If I use that term, I never want there to be any kind of "what kind of dancer?" after it.

I don't think of it that way, and I don't think the term itself is. Some people look down on strippers and the semantics don't matter at all. Stripper, dancer...if you're getting nekkid for money, you're "beneath" them or what the fuck ever.

So own the term. You can only be degraded if you let others do that to you, and deciding to call yourself a dancer instead of a stripper says they're doing it to you.

this. we shouldnt be ashamed of the word that describes what we do for money just because some idiots choose to attach other bullshit to it.
