Default Info on living in New York?

Hi everyone, I'll be graduating next yr and will be beginning my career search and apartment search in New York 4 months before graduation in 2012. I did pick out about 11 different areas that are suppose to be very nice. I would like information from the New York locals on taxes, homes, careers, shopping, entertainment, crime, etc. and also any big business advice as well. Any type of advice is surely welcomed. I love NY and can't wait to begin my 30's there! Thank u guys.

Ahhh....shopping. I loved NYC shopping so much that I took weekend trips there buy bus to spend every dollar minus food on clothes and accessories. I know I've only scratched the surface, but I had to stay within my budget. No matter what your style, it will be nearly impossible to be unsatisfied with what NY has to offer. You have Manhattan and all the other boros shopping areas to explore, plus Long Island/North NJ suburban mega malls and outlets to drop all your cash at.

ETA: Tell me more about Houston please, how is the shopping there? Houston is on the short list of places for me to move to in a few years.

Thanks for the reply. Yes NY has some great places to shop. I can't wait to move there. Houston has lots of great shopping areas. The Galleria has all the major stores and designer names. They also have outlet malls and stores such as Saks Off Fifth, Mordstrom Rack, Luxury consignment stores, etc. Lots of nice areas to live, theater are downtown, ice skating, parks, and tons of freeways and traffic!! lol. Over 5 million people live here according to the census. There's prob somewhere close to 7-8 mil living here. Very, Very Very hot like the desert with extreme humidity, and worse during the summer. The heat starts anywhere from May thru September. Mostly in the 90's, til Aug then it hits 100+!!! So if ur not used to the heat, u will hate it. Even us that's used to the heat and high humidity can't stand it. Even in Nov and Dec, it's still fairly warm. So furs are not needed here. Overall, it's the South, so it's ok but there's certain things that come with that!

well, i've lived downtown and i've lived in brooklyn (both the whitening parts and the parts that are still black) and though les has the best whole foods, i would never ever ever in life want to live there. though the whole foods on the bowery is almost reason enough to deal with....living near the bowery.

the only way to really get an apartment is to visit and find a neighborhood you like and then keep your eye on lease openings. i have done the no-broker thing and i would never do it again. i believe in ease. i believe in brokers. *shrugs*

^^^I think you get better quality places to choose from in NYC when you go through a broker. I'd have to agree on biting the bullet and paying the broker fee for their service. I loved living in the East Village and liked the Lower East side. I even liked Harlem for a while but found it dangerous to come home from the club at night. I didn't care for Hell's Kitchen, too loud, too dirty, too expensive.
All in all I'd say keep an open mind because you may find something amazing outside Manhattan. Even north Jersey has some nice surprises like Hoboken, Weehawken, downtown Jersey City. Enjoy! It's an amazing area!

As far as business goes NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK. I can't say it enough. It's a very social town and the way to get ahead is based on who you know. Taxes are crazy expensive, homes are crazy expensive and most are not worth the money (no land, small rooms etc.). Shopping in the East and West Village, and Williamsburg are amazing. Very artistic, cutting edge, outside the box designers. As far as upscale goes it's all about Fifth Avenue and I LOVE Henri Bendel for the sheer creativity of their designers. The pick the cleverest stuff! Very young and fresh!

I am from NY, born and raised, and in my opinion Fort Greene and Williamsburg are the nicest places. Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens are nice too if you're looking in Brooklyn. My advice - stay in Brooklyn, it's the most culturally diverse AND tolerant, as well as quieter than Manhattan. Your neighbors will look out for you also and that's important.
I'll be completely honest - Long Island is racist... and the commute to and from into NYC is a bitch. Never heard of BAM???
I don't know CT, Hells Kitchen is alright, it's more business-y.
Manhattan is always loud so I would choose Brooklyn. It's a 10 - 20 minute ( usually less when you figure the schedule out ) into Manhattan and has more of a neighborhood feel.

    Hope this helped.

I assumed BAM was the Brooklyn Academy of Music...therefore downtown area?

I agree with CreoleKitty, I would pick Brooklyn over Manhattan. You save money across the board and it is so close with just a glance over the river.

I guess I will have to visit during the summer to get a taste. I like the heat, but ever year I am getting older, who knows how I will feel in 5 years. Supposedly Houston is one of the best cities for cost of living, that's why it was so high on my list. How is it compared to Dallas, do you ever go out there?

Houston is better than Dallas and alot larger. Dallas is country and I've never liked it. Stick with Houston if u move to Texas. The price of living in Houston is good compared to some place like NY but that's only because of the difference btwn the # of people that live in both cities. Houston's real estate is constantly going up. I'm quite sure that it'll be much higher in 5 yrs than it is now. And the fact that Gov Rick Perry has never raised the taxes in Texas but that may change after he's gone. And how much money u make just like every city will create your decision of where u live and how much u pay, so ur thought could easily be that houston is costly to live if u don't have a great income. Also, the prices for a nice area in a newer apartment starts somewhere over a thousand a month. And the square footage will start low. The older ones have alot more room but most of those aren't in nice areas. The apartment living and housing communities in Houston are continually being built, but square footage is getting alot smaller and higher. U also have to have a car in houston, it's like LA, lots of roads and freeways and everything is spread out. So u will spend alot on gas and insurance. Also health insurance in Houston is alot more expensive than in other parts of texas. It's so many people moving here now, in five years they predict houston to have a nasty pollution cloud over the city just as LA has. That's how many cars are on the roads here. and alot of people have 2-3 cars per household, it's insane. But yes, u need to get a taste of the city and see how u like it.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I have a real estate agent I will use. I figured hells kitchen was not my type of place. I love Hoboken and may include that area on my list and it's super close to the city. But I did want the NY city feel, to be close to everything. Live in the apt or highrise within the city. But i will weigh all options. Harlem was never a choice. I spare no expense when it comes to where I live. because I want to know I'm safe and convenience and luxury is what I like. So that's why my list of areas were small.

I think I will keep my search strictly to Manhatten boroughs, NY NY and probably Hoboken NJ... I don't think Brooklyn will be my type of place.

Is it difficult to move to NY from a long distance? What is the best plan of action to finding somewhere to live?

@Glamour Rouge, moving to NY is like moving anywhere else. you need to have money, a job already in the works and a place already for u to move in when u arrive. You have to plan ahead and get everything in order before making the move.

It really is, I stayed there 2wks in 08 and really enjoyed it very much! I'm going to see what my agent can find there. I know they have areas in Hoboken and jersey city that over looks the hudson and nyvskyline. But I still love the city feel and being right into the city. My choice is a loft or apartment. I've seen some beautiful ones in manhatten so i'll see what happens!
