    Default Stripping and School....

Hey girls, so after two years of being out of school, I've registered for classes this fall. For those of you that strip full time and also attend classes, what words of advice do you have for those of us just getting started? I'm so nervous and dont want to feel overwhelmed! Also I don't sign up for my classes for a few more days, so it would be awesome if anyone had some scheduling advice on what worked out for you as far as balancing work and school.

I am completing a masters degree online. This is very convenient for being able to be more flexible with my work and school. My advice is to always put school first. Good luck!

Me too. The nights I do work, I will be getting home around 5:30am. I'm trying to figure out if I should sleep until early afternoon then go to class, or just go to the earliest possible class then sleep afterward.

I danced for a few years while going to school in an intense program. I think bartend or dancer are the only jobs that pay well where you can make it work while in an intense academic program. I think you shouldn't try to go into class on no sleep after work if it is a difficult course because it will effect how much you absorb and focus. If it is just the type of class that is a requirement and easy than that would work. I think it is easier to go to SC and force myself to pep up and work b/c more options like having a drink or dancing. I need to hustle but not trying to retain information. It sucks to be tired at work but it lends itself with the music and conversations to keeping you awake. At school if your tired in a place where you sit for hours listening to someone speak about what often is a boring topic it is much harder to pep yourself up. Good luck ladies!

Know your own sleep schedule and work around that. Are you generally a morning person? Do you "crash" at a specific time every day? How much sleep do you need to function happily? It's different for everyone and it really matters. My last semester of school, I had this one class from 2:30-3:45 on Tuesdays and I worked on Monday nights, and after only 5 hours of sleep, 2:30-3pm was the time I felt sleepy every day. I was always nodding off in that class, and got called out for it... it pissed me off. I couldn't exactly say "Sorry, I got home from the SC at 4:30 last night." It was a horrible time of day for me to try to be productive. Pick a definitive work schedule, look at your own sleeping schedule and make your decisions based on that. And always give yourself plenty of time during your most "awake" hours to do homework, because it's so easy to put off if you're tired, and nobody wants to scramble to get it done at 5am when you just got home from the club.

When I was in school and working 2 jobs, I printed off blank calendars and put when all important projects/papers/exams were due - highlighted them. Put in my work schedule - highlighted that a different color. And then went through and decided which chunks of time would be devoted to which projects/assignments so I was working on them in pieces and not going "oh shit!" at the last minute. It really really helped me.

Try to work around your schedule. Go to work on days you have off... also, always focus. It was hard for me dancing and school, because I couldn't compartmentalize anything. I would stay up watching TV on my computer and be overtired for class the next day. Just focus on school/work/school/work and let those be your priorities until you settle into your groove.

Definitely make school your first priority. It can be really hard to do that when the time comes to choose between a busy shift and working on an assignment or getting sleep for class, but you're sure to get burnt out and not do well in school otherwise. I find it hard to motivate myself to work on days where I've had a lot of class time, so keep a balance - and don't forget to give yourself social/chill time! I also recommend bringing a textbook along with you to work so you can be productive during down times. It makes me feel less guilty about being at work during quiet times, since I could have been at home doing schoolwork instead.

If you are attending full time, I would recommend starting off working only one night a week, two at the very most. You'll want to get used to your school workload...then, after maybe a month or so, you'll have an idea of what your classes are going to require from you. Then you'll be able to adjust your work schedule accordingly. If you try to start off working three or four nights a week along with a full credit load, you'll burn out from both school and work awful fast, and you'll start thinking of dropping classes or dropping school altogether. See if you can maybe get a split shift instead of day or night, both of which can be difficult to fit into school time and sleep time. You don't want to be working until 4 a.m. when you have class at 9 the next morning.

I had classes three days a week - Monday Wednesday and Friday. I danced those nights and slept and did homework the other days. On semesters that schedule didn't work I signed up for evening classes Tuesdays and Thursdays, and full days Monday Wednesday Friday. I only danced three or four nights a week.

I'm also going to try dancing around my classes this fall and will work from Saturday-Monday with school from Tues to Friday. I know Sunday and Monday aren't money-making shifts but going back to school is all about hard work and compromise.

Do a search for "Charlie's Guide to Stripping through College." Some good discussion in there.

^Charlie, why didn't you sticky that post? It was an informative one, and as we have so many dancers who are also students; it would make for a great sticky.

When I was in school, I only danced on the weekends-- Friday and Saturday nights. I made enough money on those busy nights to get by. I had Sunday to decompress, catch up on sleep and get last minute things done for the school week. Most college students go out on Friday and Saturday nights anyway, so you'll be like everyone else, except you'll be making lots of money doin it!

^ I do a similar schedule As well, I try to work either Thursday or Friday, and have some social time on the other night. Saturday is a toss-up, if I need more cash, I'll work it, if there's a social event though, I might do that instead and work a night during the week instead. You have to plan ahead, you have to know how much money you need each month and schedule your shifts so you can earn it and still have time for schoolwork. It's pretty stressful sometimes, I wish you all the best!

Working on the weekends sounds like the best idea. The clubs around here require at least one weekday to be able to work weekends, so that will be the tricky part.

I only work 1-2 weekend days only. School is my number 1 priority. At first I didn't make it my priority and I almost failed a few classes. I have class 9-5 or 6 every day though So weekdays are not an option.

I go to school full time and dance part time. I think it depends on what is more important to you. I personally do not dance during the week except maybe a Thursday night because usually the teachers will go easy on you and let you go early on a Friday. I am trying to get straight As so if I need to study more I won't work. Otherwise I'll work a Friday and Saturday night plus a Sunday day shift if I don't already feel dead.

I've been stripping through two years of college now and going into my senior year. I try to take as many online and evening classes as possible to keep in line with my night time schedule. I know somebody else mentioned it- it's extremely important to have as regular of a sleep schedule as possible. I usually manage to make it to bed by 330 and up by 11 at the latest, so no morning classes for me. We have to make our schedules by the month, so I'm also careful to work around important dates for projects, midterms, and finals.

This semester I'm also doing fifteen credits but only have nine at any given time because of accelerated classes. Surprisingly, even though it seems the workload is more, this works out much better for me because I only have to focus on three classes at a time rather than five. Now to figure out how to fit an internship in the schedule...

When I was an undergrad, I took as many online courses as possible. However, I learn better that way... when I teach myself the material. You have to be motivated to go to class or do homework, otherwise you won't be able to. You save sooo much time (and money) without those transportation times/costs.

I wish I had the discipline to do online classes. I need to be in a classroom, ready and accountable. I took an online class once, and it was a disaster.

See, I'm the opposite. I'm better at teaching myself and my main issue is attendance. I get knocked full letter grades solely based on the fact that I'm terrible at showing up. Even when I do show up, I'm often just a body and pay absolutely zero attention to what's going on.
