^^^ I taught computer networking at a 2-year technical school and I tutor adult learners in algebra and college algebra. Stossel is dead on, a lot of these people borrow all this money and they will never get it back. Just think if someone taught you JOB SKILLS and then gave you $100,000 to start a new business. You would have a much better chance to succeed than if you borrowed $100,000 for a liberal arts degree that MIGHT have earning potential.

College is the biggest scam ever. I have a Masters and am still paying off my debts. If I could do it again I probably wouldn't do it. Instead, I'd dance right out of college, save and start a business.

The degree is overrated and the main reason is because too many students attend. The bottom 40% of students should NEVER attend college. But they do and because of this idea everyone should be there. Colleges get these students and then offer remedial classes, which should not be in college. Where I attended college they require you to take a senior seminar class where you spend all semester telling people tour problems. They also required you to take various other worthless classes. I have worked in the corporate world for years but made far more money dancing than I ever did these jobs.

So true! I dropped out of BU for this reason. I would have ended up with around $120K in debit. So I decided to get my IT certs and finance exams Series 7,9 and 10. The IT certs and finance exams ended up costing me around $13k with exam preparation classes. I then started working from the bottom up. The experience alone was worth easily worth $250K+. From that point on it was only a matter of time before I started my own company.

    Yes and No.

The job market sucks right now.

However a bachelors (or higher) degree is a sensible option.

The key take-away from the video is that you should NEVER spend outside your means on ANYTHING---- even a degree.

Take me for example: I was accepted into a bunch of schools. My dream school cost $40,000+++ per year and they gave me a meager $10,000 scholarship. That was a tough scenario, considering my household income at age 17 was a tough under $20,000 annually.

Rather than get $120,000 in debt (with interest that figure could swell to near $250,000), I swallowed my pride and went to a state school with a much more significant scholarship and a far lower price tag. I graduated with honors and worked my ass off stripping to fund further education at the dream school. I'm currently taking classes at the dream school. In my opinion, this is a wiser allocation of funds, since my BA degree is more or less irrelevant. Heck! Damn near everyone has a Bachelors degree. So yeah, if I have to splurge, I will splurge where it counts: GRAD School.

What Mr. Stossel says about trade schools is soooo true! Even though people look down on Vocational schools, they offer both stability and damn good money. Unionized vocations offer amazing benefits too!

Jeepers! The snobbery surrounding education makes me sick. A degree from some fancy school is really nice; it is just like having a fancy purse, it is a symbol of status. However, I happen to be painfully practical, to a fault. And I would MUCH rather have a cheapy purse full of CA$H than a name-brand-bag with nothing in it.

Seriously, it's not about the "brand" of education you get, it's about what you learn and what you DO that makes a big difference.

I'm glad I saw this video. At least it gives me hope.

Oddly enough, I watched College, Inc. yesterday.... it discusses for-profit colleges such as University of Phoenix, etc.

    Also!!! Watch this! OMG!
Colbert covered the for-profit issue last year: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-col...-andrew-hacker

There going to be legislation that going to crack down on for profit schools. There are also reports that Obama caved in on some issue.s

I think the US is the only country that actually looks down on vocational schools. In Europe vocational aka trade schools provide a highly skilled work force and provide a easier way for companies to find qualified candidates.

Obama caving in? Would never happen (sarcasm). But yes these for profit are out of control. I recommend the Frontline documentary about them (available on their website). I didn't go to for profit schools but still a waste of time. One was a "name" arts and communication school and the other a state university.

^^^ A little unrelated, but the University of Chicago put out the WORST Algebra I text I have ever seen. I am forced to use it this summer because one of the "super duper private schools" mandates that I use it. The book is way too deficient on practice problems. I wonder if there is a conspiracy?

It depends, not every case is the same. I do agree that you can get a good job without going through college, however if you wanna go to college I absolutely advice on having the money right away or getting a scholarship. I know people that got scholarships and they don't own anything, however I remember a friend that was paying out of state tuition and was living on campus and she was paying everything with loans. I cannot imagine how much money she owes right now :S

I dropped out of college twice back in the late 70's. The first time it was a music school because I thought it might make more sense to get a liberal arts degree instead....then I dropped out of BU when I decided I really didn't want to wind up in debt just for the sake of a "safety" or "fall back" degree since what I really wanted to do was play music for the rest of my life...

Long story short, the "I wanna be a rock star" thing never really worked out but I make a very good living on the technical side of the entertainment industry doing a job that you really could not go to school for back when I was starting out. There are tech schools and even degree programs for my job now but you still have to go through an apprenticeship or intern program after graduating-this means you are going to work either for free or for very short money at the outset-just when those school loans are coming due...

I just finished putting my daughter through college. Fortunately she was very happy with a local state college so the damage to my wallet was minimal. She got a job working for a small company but it shows great potential for growth. She's already gotten a promotion and a raise after less than a year. Oh, did I mention that the job she does has absolutely nothing to do with what she went to college for? Of course, the kicker is that she could not have applied for the entry-level receptionist job she got hired for without a bachelors or associates degree of some sort. A lot of companies use a degree as a sort of "pre-screening". Even if your degree is unrelated, it get's you in the door...

College or no college? It's a tough call. It would be a much easier decision if it were not so damn expensive!

That is very true, especially in this economy. Many jobs never requiring a degree now do because of the economy.

I'm in Canada ... I have a college diploma ... I haven't been able to get a job in three months. I have gotten two interviews in the past three months! When looking for summer jobs for the past couple years, it has taken about a month but I got like 7 or 8 interviews each year (and got the 7th or 8th job!). This year sucks. And I actually have a college diploma!
