Default Getting fit - where to start?

I'm now a UK size 12, 14 in some bottoms!!!!!! I'm horrified. Most of it has come from sitting on my arse and eating junk food since my BA 3 months ago, but i've never really exercised anyway. So I am determined to get down to a size 8, but most importantly, firm up and look good in my skin no matter what size i am. I know the key to this is water, water, water, but i need some tips from your girls. Unless I see quick results i give up too easy, i don't like gyms, and i don't have a partner for things like dance classes etc. So what do you suggest?

I'm being a cheat and having laser lipo in a couple of months on my thighs and tummy, but i want to get a head start and set up a good routine for my future. This is especially important as i just turned 31

Any tips for a lazy ass fatty?

Curious- What is a UK size 12/14 in the US?

My neighbor bought a pilates machine off of Craigslist about a month ago. She uses it 35 mins a day and I can already tell a difference. She doesn't even sweat. It's unreal. I want to get one and go on a juice fast and see what happens. I definitely could lose some weight.

Think it's a 10 - 12 US, ugh. Men are calling me "curvy" so it's really freaking bad lol. What is a pilates machine?

Love to try zumba.. have done some african dance classes in the past. Trouble is with dance, you need a partner really, or girls to go with and i don't have that.

I use a weighted hula hoop for exercise and it's a great workout! I also like to dance in front of my mirror and pretend I'm a pop star. It does wonders for my self-esteem

the first couple weeks are brutal, even though I was a workout freak even before I started it, but if you can get through that, you'll be hooked. It costs about $140 CAD but there are some free versions floating around online if you're at all curious...but either way, curves are natural and beautiful on a woman, embrace them!

Zumba is pretty good. If you don't Like doing the whole gym thing you can do zumba on PS3 or xbox. I like it cuz I can do it from the privacy of my own home. Maybe even while camming :p guys would love that. anyhow I'm trying to drop some weight to cuz I'm too curvy so I cut drinking soda and stick to water mainly. I eat my fruits instead of drinking them and I portionize my food. That along with some zumba and I've dropped 25 lbs.

I was already doing the gym thing (and am a lapsed Krav Maga trainee as well), but I just finished a term of Bhangra classes through my school and nine pounds just fell right off, like magic!

I haven't changed my eating habits at all, and have not been to the gym since the class started- I guess it just gave my body the charge it needed of something different. The class I took was very similar to Zumba, except with Bhangra and Bollywood music and moves. Quite a workout but so much fun it doesn't really feel like work. I'm taking bellydance in the fall.

I don't know when school starts where you live, but if you take a class through a school you'll bond with some other students over the shared experience of learning together and probably make some new friends.

I really recomend pole dancing if you dont do it already. I had a pole in my room and i went on this awesome site where you could puchase online lessons. Its got a really nice online community, and they all post vids of themselves doing fun monthly pole dance challenges, and keep each other motivated and help with moves and stuff.

Honestly it was the BEST thing i've ever done to lose weight. Because its such good excercise cardio and strength, and its SO addictive once you get started. I would find some days I'd be on the pole for about 4 hours straight trying to perfect a routine or get a certain move, or just dancing about.

In 5 months, I lost nearly 2 stone! And I wasn't even eating less...I never eat really really BADLY to be honest, but I do like my food.. I went from a uk size 14 to 10.

Pole dancing classes are fun too, you wont see the same results obviously because...well....obviously you'll only be getting a hour or so a week. I reccomend getting your own pole and then getting online lessons (i can show you the website i used if you want )

I completely know what you mean about excercise having to be motivating and fun and show results or you just quit, i'm exactly the same.

I really think you should try some adult dance classes though...to be honest you really DONT need a partner or other girls, most people go alone in fact. (unless its an obvious partner dance like ballroom or something)

I reccomend doing a fun dance class like beginner hip hop or street dance, or jazz! Great excercise, amazing workout and FUN.

And incase you need any proof that pole dancing is a great workout...look at the BODY and awesomeness of this dancer

    good luck!!!

It is fun. I think u can even play it online on PS3 although I have yet to try it. The game comes with a belt with a pocket that you put the stick in and it follows you're movements.

I don't think everyone needs to eat less.. they need to eat healthy. I sadly have a friend that always ask me what have I eaten today cause I forget as they say. I eat only when I'm hungry.

Eating meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner just because it's time for them.
Well i can tell you if i would eat all 3 meals every day i would be fat. I usually eat breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner. Skipping meals, starving once in a while never hurt anybody, considering you give a break to your digestive system, and you can live longer according to science.

Once when i was young (23) i lived like an anorexic for 2 months eating food just to get by, an apple, a tea, a slice of bread, a banana a day, and an exercise plan made by me: push up, weights, crunches, sit ups, every day. I got down to 100 pounds and i looked my best in my whole life, and kept my weight like that after returning to my normal diet for a long time. Then i had internet to learn all the good stuff on nutrition:

I didn't know that time that eating that badly will eat up at my muscles, yet i was gaining muscle everyday, my mom tried stopping me doing much anymore, she said i was getting too muscular.

I had abs when i did crunches and all kind of ab exercizes, and now that i know that those not do very much on loosing belly fat i,m not doing them anymore and i have a fat belly.

Skipping meals will slow down metabolism, they say, while when i skipped them i was at my leanest and healthy.

Conclusion: Do whats best for you. Knowledge didn't help me much in this territory.

Don't listen to conventional nutrition advice!!! After all, it ALSO says we should mostly be eating grains (gluten?!? um NO that is horrible for you!! its like poison!) AND drinking breast milk from a random animal (cow) that is intentionally kept pregnant to produce milk using disgusting chemicals and hormones. How can you really trust nutritional "recommendations" and "advice" from someone who clearly already doesn't have 100% of your best interest in mind? When I thought about it, I realized that those industries must be paying the government some big bucks or something. That advice CANNOT be healthy!

Healthwise, I believe it is healthiest to eat like the Mediterranean diet. No red meat, little processed foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats all you want. That's how I mostly eat. Fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, soymilk (in moderation), occasionally some cheese/cream, and maybe some rice here and there. No gluten, no red meat, little bread, and organic/natural whenever possible. That, I believe, is how we should be eating.

Buy or download some workout dvds and do them at home! Also, go for a run, jog, or hike everyday!

All that will get you healthy in no time, assuming you have no chronic health problems.

WOW girls, so many ideas, THANK YOU !!

Here's what I'm going to do:
Sign up for Zumba & pole dancing classes
    Run 4-5 times per week
Kick start diet with a week long detox
    Drink loads more water
Get Zumba/ fitness games for the XBox & dust it off lol
Change my diet to more healthy
    Eat little and often
Laser lipo on thighs, bum, & tum

This is all going to start on Monday when I shop for my detox diet and have my first zumba class, plus go for my first run.

The diet is going to be the hardest part.I'm already pescetarian (no red or white meat), but i'm not sure how i will manage without bread/ wheat etc, and i love my dairy.

Feel free to add suggestions/ comments

Finding something active that you love to do is a huge plus. I've become guilty of getting lazy lately too and I use the heat as an excuse to put off getting back into running. But any exercise class that gets your cardio in will help you get rid of fat quickly. Two basic exercise moves that are great for general fitness are squat thrusts and pushups.

I agree that what you put in your body is where to start with fitness though. If you drink sodas, stop. Even diet sodas are bad for you. I used to drink multiple sodas every day, then I got quite ill for a period of time and lost a substantial amount of weight. My stomach was so messed up after my illness that I had to completely change my diet, because I could no longer stand fast food, sodas, or most meats. I lost about thirty-five pounds in two and a half months when I was sick and everyone said I'd gain it back, but because I changed how I look at food, I only gained about seven pounds back and it's been over a year and a half.

I'm a vegetarian, but if you're not, lean meats like fish and chicken are a good bet. Personally, I don't recommend juices because they're so high in sugar (yeah, I know they're natural sugars, but still) and I feel far more full if I eat an apple rather than drink the juice, because it takes more time and you can pair it with something like natural peanut butter. As far as fasting goes, I've only ever done it when I've been taking shit I shouldn't, and I just had some neurotic need to "cleanse." Some people recommend fasting every other day if you're into the lifestyle (they site some passage about Jesus fasting for half the year o.O), but I wouldn't recommend it for weight loss. You'll just lose water weight and deplete your body of resources it needs.

I agree that grains are not the answer. According to one of my fitness crazy friends, they help to add a layer of very persistent fat that was favored during times when gladiators fought, because it helped to protect the muscle from blades. He told me this as I was enjoying my beloved Grape Nuts and remarking that no matter how thin I get, I always seem to have a layer of belly fat over my abs that I hate. I keep my grains down to Kashi GoLean (original) cereal and the occasional peanut butter sandwich for the most part now and have seen a huge difference.

V8 and the Slim Fasts that are for those with a Gluten intolerance (I think their label says something about being easily digested) are good on-the-go boosts for me and completely necessary since I'm in class for five hours straight, but just make sure you watch the sugar content. Sugar is your number one enemy for weight loss, imo.

    Eat less, move more.
I like walking as it's time consuming so I'm not tempted to snack. It doesn't feel as good as running, but less chance of injury. When I was passing out fliers for my club, I walked 20k every night.

    ONE IMPORTANT TIP!

don't set your goals/targets too high. Like its AWESOME that you have so many plans and youre so excited about it all, but I reckon if you plan to do too much all at once, (millions of classes, strict diet, running every day) its MUCH harder to keep up than if you start slowly, build up your fitness and motivation and add more and more as you succeed and grow stronger.

Like maybe start out with one of two classes a week, running once a week, and cutting down on food that you KNOW is bad for you, junk, chocolate etc, still treating yourself once in a while, and enjoying it when you do (the important thing is not to beat yourself up over it... you are only HUMAN) but overall trying to eat fruit and veggies and nuts as snacks.

Then once you feel happy with that (and even that WILL make you feel better) then start being stricter with your diet and being more active!

Trust me, the only time I ever succeed in losing wight is when I do it gradually, and its hard cos when you DO finally feel motivated its so easy to how yourself into it and go 'RIGHT IM GONNA DO A CLASS EVERY DAY AND RUN EVERY NIGHT AND EAT MEGA HEALTHILY! YEAH...THIS IS THE SEXY WORK OUT MONTAGE PART OF THE FILM!'

But trust me, whenever I do this...I always find I've taken on way too much than I can handle and end up not being able to do it all, getting depressed and buying loads of chocolate.

Take it slow, pay attention to how your body feels when you eat well and excercise. Don't punish yourself, if you miss a few days of excercise or you eat badly one day. We are creatures of habit, and its hard to break old habits and take on completely new ones. But you can do it, because you are in control of yourself. Listen to your body and what it needs. All getting fit really is, is respecting yourself.
Enjoy your body, look after it, it's made you lots of £££

Get a physical therapist. I had to from a broken back, and the man made my muscles scream like I danced a double in new shoes in just five minutes. I was seeing him 2 times a week and lost 10 pounds in a month doing the exercises he showed me.
My advice, workout your biggest calorie burner, that is, you ass. Figure out how to do an actual squat(toes and knees touch the wall and the back is perfectly straight), and other muscle builders of that nature. It will boost your calories burned and get you on the right path again.
Working out is the way to loose. Everyone has seen the girls that have been 100 pounds with cellulite. They look great in clothes, you want to look great without, so build muscles.
