Default Is sweat good or bad for hair?

The dilemma - I've started running frequently, and I'm sweating like a beast. I always shower after my runs, but try to not wash my hair. Is this a good thing? My scalp totally sweats, and my hair is damp afterwards. Will the sweat - because it's salty - actually dry out my hair? I'd hate to have to wash my hair 5 days a week, but if the lack of washing is doing the opposite of what I wanted then that's no good either.

I try to wash my hair as little as possible. I have no qualms with going out grocery shopping or doing daily chores with my hair pulled up in a bun, not having been washed in 5 days. The less I wash it, the better it looks; natural oils and all that. I'll only wash it often if I'm working (dancing) regularly, otherwise it's nice and 'greasy'.

Any idea? Really trying to grow it out in the best condition possible....

Isn't lady sweat supposed to be really acidic? At least according to those Secret anti persperant commercials. Don't know how it would effect hair though.

according to the article, it's about as bad for your hair as salt water, and recommends an after-swim shampoo or one made for frequent use.

Another contributer to the article said to rinse hair with clean water prior to working out, and to rinse afterwords and use a light conditioner.

I've always just rinsed with water afterwords.

After sweating profusly you should either rinse or cowash your hair

It's not good or bad for your hair, as long as you rinse it out. You don't have to wash your hair, just rinse it out after you sweat. If you want to clean your hair without drying it out, use only conditioner or shampoo mixed with water. If you just leave the sweat it in your hair, then it might irritate your scalp and/or cause excessive drying, depending on how much you sweat.

I find that the additional texture from the salt in sweat is too abrasive and causes damage from the extra coarse strands rubbing together.
No need to WASH it unless you let it dry completely... a good rinse with conditioner should take care of ya.

I think I'm going to do the conditioner rinse then. It pains me to let all that scalp oil rinse down the drain, but if sweat is drying out my hair then it's the lesser evil. Hopefully conditioner and water rinse won't dry out my hair too badly...

Some people use foaming shampoo, you just apply it on your hair and then dry it with a towel.

Well, sweat strips out easier than scalp oil (at least on my head) so try to find a nice balance where it's in there long enough to cleanse the sweat without clearing up all the scalp oils and you shouldn't get too dry..

this might be weird but before i work out i put a deep conditioning mask in my hair. that way my hair already saturated and coated (so less saturation and more protection from sweat) and after i work out and sweat i rinse it all out together. i have my own treadmill and elliptical though..i can't really imagine going out to workout looking like that haha.

Thats perfect! I have my own treadmill too, so on days I run inside I think I'll do this! I'll have to find a really deep, thick mask to use though, so it doesn't drip down my face. That wouldn't be very conducive to a workout...

    Thanks for the idea!

I've heard you tend to lose hair if you don't wash it after sweating...read somewhere about the sweat or whatever being a bad pH or something for your hair follicles..

Rinse with conditioner in a lukewarm or cooler water so you get it out.The hot water is more likely to remove your natural oil.

Sounds like you have dry hair problem. This is especially an issue if your hair has been dyed or bleached. What I found helped me a huge amount was at night soaking olive oil or coconut oil in my hair overnight then in morning shampoo it out followed by a conditioner. If I would get fancy I would put a hot towel on my head before falling asleep, then remove it, cover pillow with a regular towel so I wont mess up my pillowcase, and then prepare for really nice hair in the morning.
Also what'd help my hair, since I always have dry hair, is before shampooing hair, i would first lather up my hair with conditioner and water. Then add shampoo. That order of things would make the shampoo run through my hair easier...so less breakage, and my hair wouldn't feel like sticky straw...the way it would feel when I would start with just shampoo without conditioner.
