    Default Niteflirt Listing Changes

If you are on NF you remember a few weeks ago when there were problems with listings and coding. Well this was posted by Erin today.
As many of you are aware, a few weeks ago we modified the types of HTML and other code allowed on your listings and home pages. We expected that the changes would have little impact on you and the layout of your listings, but we quickly learned that we were wrong. Not only was the impact on listing layout much greater than we expected, the way the changes were implemented prevented you from seeing how the code had changed before you saved your listing. And, because of this, we temporarily rolled back the changes. But the modified restrictions will return.

We are putting more limitations on the type of code you can use on your listings and home pages for a number of reasons, but
primarily to ensure the best possible experience for customers. We can do that by making sure that pages load quickly, that the layout is consistent, and the like.

Our research shows that a large percentage of our customers view NiteFlirt on screens that only allow them to view 1024 pixels or fewer. This means that, in order to make your listing look great to everyone and accommodate the NiteFlirt-generated content (such as your Call Now button!), the listing content you create should be no wider than 850 pixels. Listing content that is bigger than 850 pixels could be cut off if customers are viewing on a smaller screen and they would be forced to scroll in order to see the entire listing. Viewing the entire listing on the screen is always more appealing than a listing that has to be viewed in scrolling stages! We will be limiting the width of your pages to 850 pixels with these restrictions.

Our research also shows that a lot of the tags in listings' HTML are not closed. For example, every <font> tag should also have a </font> tag after the text you are formatting else the font will not display correctly for everyone. When we implemented the code changes previously, our system closed all open tags, and often in the wrong place. This caused the intended formatting to be lost and was one of the biggest issues we had. When the modified restrictions return, we will require all tags to be closed before a listing can be saved. We suggest you take a look at your code and close your tags now to avoid issues later.

When the modified restrictions return, we will allow Flash and image mapping. We've posted all tags and attributes that we support in the NiteFlirt Help Center. With the exception of image mapping, if it is not listed there, it will not be permitted. We suggest you start making any changes you may need today!

Please keep in mind that the ristrictions can change and become more restrictive if we find it necessary in the future, but we'll notify you first. Please know that just because it is permitted today doesn't mean it will always be.

We do not have an exact timeframe for when the modified restrictions will be put back into place. We need to do some work to improve how you edit your listing so it will take a bit of time. However, once we know, we'll let you all know.

Still vague on the time frame.

I'm late then. I just hope this time there won't be a ton ton of glitches. Every time they fix something they usually screw something else up.

^No doubt. I wouldn't have noticed that post from Erin myself had I not gone specifically looking because I wanted to add a new flash game before the new restrictions

I know I'm going to have to edit all my pages at some point, if for no other reason than they're wider than 850pixels, but I'm hoping I can leave it for a while, at least until the dust settles, by simply not editing anymore once the restrictions take effect. If it works the way it did last time, the restrictions will only "activate" on your account if you try to edit. So I'm crossing fingers I can ride it out as-is until it's figured out how to make sure our flash stuff doesn't get screwed.

I had planned a listing overhaul but now I'm going to wait until the aftermath. I do have to listings bigger than 850 though.

^Ya I don't want to spend the time to make changes until we see exactly how it's really going to work. I'm hoping if I just don't edit, my listings will remain until I *do* see the exact new parameters and how to work within them. I'm hoping the backlash from their last lil "experiment" will be enough to make them realize it would be a horrendous idea to try to force us to change by a certain date or something. The way they set it up the first time, to only take effect when you edited, *would have* been great if they'd just warned us first.

I wonder about those emails I've seen some people on the forums claim to receive. I've never received a single email from nitelfirt except the payment receipts, missed call notices, customer emails and replies to my rare CS messages. I can't even fathom why they wouldn't have sent out at least a mass email before they went and made a huge site change. That, and the way they handle a few other things really makes it look like whoever is in charge is really not very business savvy, or at least doesn't use much forethought.

And really. How in the hell does it take 2 YEARS to recover from a site crash? Either they're still trying to use totally obsolete code (which will never work) or they're not putting actual money into it. "We're working hard on it" just doesn't ring true anymore.

I've never received any of those emails either. Well when the site crash happened they changed owners, and I think the new person has no idea how to run things. I haven't believed the "working on it line" in quite some time. I think it is about as good as it will get at this point.

Ya, I know they changed ownership and I agree; just doesn't seem like whoever took over knows how to run it. I haven't believed the "working on it" line either. They make changes that are completely pointless and generally trigger MORE problems, but take forever to fix things which were actually useful.

They should've scrapped the whole thing and built a new site when it crashed. Considering revenues there, it doesn't cost THAT much to build a new site. sheesh

I too never got an email and a couple weeks ago my webmaster was making changes and then the next day not only were the changes not there but the coding had changed-pink letters went to black text! We were both like WTF? and emailed NF who responded to us by saying a few days later that the changes should stick now (seemed like save changes wasn't working.

We are gonna fix this tomorrow and hopefully NF is right...
