Love oil pulling! It whitens your teeth beautifully if you do it with coconut oil.
I did this with sesame oil for a few weeks but doing it for 20 minutes becomes a bit much. I hope it works well for you!

I want to try this.

Danni I read about oil pulling and had been to the exact website that you posted! I researched more and discovered you can use coconut oil as well. Since I had it on hand, that's what I tried. As Discuntent said, my teeth were so white! The only thing is though, I never got it to 20mins. I was up to maybe 5, but I still saw results! I did it in the shower, so just to warn you...your mouth will fill up with saliva fast! I was spitting it out, then nearly killed myself (oil in the tub...what was I thinking? ha!)
Anyway, doing it in the shower was best for me, but be sure to bring a cup in there with you to expell. I did it in the begining of the summer, so starting tomorrow morning I'm going to try it again. I really saw great results even for the short time that I stuck with it![]()
I have oil pulled off and on for the last few years. I use it anytime I'm coming down with a "cold" and whatever was on it's way, never quite manifests. :-) Good stuff!

I never realized that, just one more reason to start again!
I know they say 20mins, but I really did see great results w/o doing it for that long. The first time I may have lasted 30 seconds and my mouth felt so fresh and clean and my teeth were whiter too! Just work your way up and do the best you can![]()
Well, I read this thread and just did a 15 min session with Sesame Oil (which is omfg...NASTY straight-up) but it seems legit. My teeth improved a shade already.
Definitely going to invest in some coconut oil though. Blech.

I've oil pulled with several oils. Coconut oil is the most versatile but after awhile I really favored castor oil (which is not for the beginner as it tastes like motor oil) as it seemed to pull up larger and more solid balls of mucous.
Didn't particularly like hemp oil as it seemed to make the little balls of mucous really small, spread out, and bitter.
It helped quite a lot with my plaque where my teeth started feeling really smooth, like I'd just gotten descaled at a dentist's. I also find when I oil pull consistently, that I have hardly any morning breath (less bacteria breeding) and I think it improves my BO.
I've also done mega pulls with coconut oil, oregano oil, and cayenne mixed together and just felt bursts of well-being and just feeling at one with the universe (this has only happened once, but hey, I cleaned my whole house while oil pulling and then marveled at the stars and my place in the universe.)
It's also good to do while in the car as you can spit into a cup and do it again. You don't have to be super on top of doing it in the morning, or before eating-- it's better to do it than not do it at all because you're worried about not being able to brush afterward or that you've just eaten.
Start small both in amount of oil and length of time.
Since reading this I'm definitely going to start with the Coconut oil, did anyone else have minor BAD side effects from the "cleansing/purging"? There was only a few people who posted on earthclinic that they had some headaches when they first started....It seems like there's so many great benefits, I'm down.

I have tried oil pulling with organic sunflower oil. I going to start doing it again with coconut oil this time since I have so much of the stuff.

I don't remember any headaches. Most of the time when people post something about negative reactions, part of it can be herxheimer's reaction which is also known as a healing crisis, where you're detoxing at too fast of a rate. I think when it comes to oil pulling, this is probably less of an issue unless you're dealing with a major body issue/disease.
The nice part about this over other alternative health options is that what you're dealing with gets spit out-- both the oil and the bacteria and supposed toxins from the vein running underneath your tongue.
I've seen people suggest (no solid evidence) that 90% of what humans get sick with, is directly affected by the bacteria in our mouth, because your body is always having to have an immune response to that to keep it in line, weakening it's response to things that might be more necessarily addressed. Also, bacteria can cause illness and think about what you're swallowing in your saliva hundreds of times a day.
Pretty gross, right?
And also, people could just be sensitive or have bad reactions to a particular oil-- coconut oil's not going to be for everyone-- it's just great for so many applications outside-- makeup removal, lotion, anti-bacterial zit shrinker, a small bit for hair health, toothpaste-- that it's great to have around the house. What I can say from a personal opinion level is that all your oils should be cold pressed so they have all the healthy enzymes in them-- but also that anytime I smell coconut oil from a plastic jar now I want to barf-- I prefer glass jar coconut oil-- that plastic...even from different companies. I can just SMELL it and taste it in the coconut oil. VERY GROSS.
But you should experiment with different oils and see what you like. and you should be switching up the oils anyway every couple of weeks so you're positive affects don't plateau.

Nah, I just go by the glass jar, price, and kind of eyeball it to see if it looks like it's old or not (I don't know why, but I think that if it's kind of yellowish and greasy in the jar, I don't like it. Maybe it's old, or mixed with oils, or just in my head. However, coconut oil is white and is a really light oil. Luckily, it's also one of the most shelf-stable oils there is so maybe it doesn't matter.) I've bought a few different types from Whole Foods and other places. As far as a company I like when I buy online (which is rare in the past couple of years) I like Tropical Traditions. I think they have a good business model, and they also have good deals by email from time to time.

I "pulled" for the first time today. I only did 6 minutes. How often would you recommend I do it?
What is the science behind it? I went on the OP's website & read some stuff but I still don't understand how it works.

I think there's some basis in Indian medicine for this (forgive me, I'm just going off of memory), most of the stuff I've seen has been based on first-person anecdote, for which there is a lot of support on earthclinic, curezone, and a heap of other sites.
Basically the idea is two-fold, and while one sounds more "out there" the second more than makes up for it:
1. There's a vein running under your tongue. Supposedly, all or most of the blood in your body gets circulated in about twenty minutes, which is why your target is to oil pull for twenty minutes. The membrane between your vein and the open cavity of your mouth is really thin, so oil pulling supposedly can help pull toxins out of your bloodstream.
Now that's the out-there one which you can choose to believe or disbelieve. Here is why you should do it though:
2. Oil attracts bacteria in a way that toothpaste or mouthwash is never going to be able to do. It's able to sleep between your teeth and maybe help your pockets a little bit more. It likely encourages blood flow to your mouth which is never a bad thing. But mostly, it helps take bacteria and funk out of your mouth. Mouthwash can do this but mouthwash also kills the good bacteria in your mouth putting you into a vicious cycle. Or at least that's what I understand when I see my dentist's ultra special not sold to the public mouthwash he uses on patients that doesn't do this. The oil attracts the bad bacteria breeding in your mouth and you're able to get rid of it which is why it's emphasized not to swallow the oil afterward (duh.)
Now, there's other things it's good for but who knows why it works the way it does or if the things it helps are just related to all the gunk in our mouth not stressing out our bodies anymore. Think about this for the moment though-- your mouth is closely connected to your sinuses, and your ears--so if you have sinus issues or ear aches, this could conceivably help.
I can say this--
it does help kill morning breath, as in, you'll wake up and you should have nearly no morning breath.
it helps give you feelings of well-being (or does to me and others)
it can help drain an abscess like nobody's business (recommended oil pulling to a friend and this worked for her as she was freaking out about going to the dentist.)
Also recommended for people who need to get a root canal as a way to pull out infection.
it also helps with colds and bronchitis (pulling the mucous up)
and I can personally attest to it making a massive difference when I lived in a house with really bad mold and thought I had bronchitis but it turned out there was really just that much mold I was breathing.
Here's a page of general feedback from earthclinic talking about everything from it helping people sleep better, to helping their sinuses and PMS cramps:

Now, what I will say is-- do your research, and in some cases, if you got your dental work done by someone not great (=really bad), your fillings might come loose. My boyfriend has good ol' army dentistry (the worst) and his fell out. I had a good dentist as a kid, and none of mine are loose. If you're worried about this, you can gently swish (which is what you're supposed to do anyway) on only one area of the mouth and see how that feels.
For the person who asked how often one can do this-- you can do this as often as you want. Some people "mega pull" for hours while they're doing housework or other stuff, and spit out when they need to spit out (oil thickens or thins again, I just spit out when I feel like I need some fresh oil or that I have a huge need to expectorate....or sneeze) I would say if it's something you don't like doing yet, do it twice a day and try to build up to twenty minutes. If you like doing it, then do it whenever, though try the whole "first thing in the morning before eating" to see how that's different from oil pulling after you've eaten. I'm sure for some people it matters, and it probably helps to pull out more bacteria before you're eating and swallowing some of it.

thanks for the info. i'll read up on it. it sounded at first this was something like the foot detox method that turned out not to work.

Due to this thread (I haven't regularly oil pulled in months-- I think the last time I pulled was three weeks ago maybe twice and before that it was several weeks as well) I went out and got myself a bottle of cold-pressed macademia nut oil (they only had refined coconut oil which I didn't want.) I oil pulled last night a few hours after having half a bag of cookies, and then an hour later I went to bed.
I had VERY strange dreams-- two that I would almost classify as nightmares except that while I was a tiny bit scared, it was more like I was really restless, and that the dreams were disturbing without me having that tight-chest, wake up panting and wishing I wasn't alone feeling that I've had after a nightmare (which aren't common for me.) I actually would wake up pissed off that my sleep was being so restless and blamed the cookies for it.
Finally I was able to fall asleep, but I finally figured out that it might actually have been my oil pulling, which I did for a pretty long time-- maybe forty minutes while I was messing around with my computer.
I googled oil pulling and dreams and found this:
http://www.longhaircareforum.com/sho...d.php?t=182777
I also remember reading on other forums that vivid dreaming, or disturbing dreams are pretty common while detoxing-- So, just a heads up in case you've had that happen, or you're thinking about oil pulling, so you don't blame the cookies like I did![]()

Do you think oil pulling can help tone the face as well? I can see how one can do some facial exercises like puffing the cheeks while pulling...just a thought...

I tried this yesterday! It was... weird. Interesting results, but weird. Normally I spend all day sneezing, but I barely had any yesterday! I did it for 15 minutes because I AM HARDCORE
(but too impatient for 20)
