^^^ adding the usual disclaimer that nobody posting in Dollar Den is a qualified investment advisor ... thus any 'suggestions' about potential investments must be considered as personal opinions rather than investment advice. As always, perform your own due diligence.

In the way of a personal opinion, Carbonite got off to an early 'lead' in the online backup business. However, there are now a growing number of competitors, both 3rd party and in association with computer manufacturers. As such, Carbonite's future growth / profit levels may not follow past history.

Could you explain why you think it's a great buy?

It has had a solid track upward in volume and price. The company has one of the best marketing programs out there and is not just endorsed by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh but by many left wing crazies that are on the radio opposite of them.

Its a solid company with great financials and a great product that is sold at a relatively good price point.

And yes my degree is in Business and Finance so I do look at investments all the time. It is one of the areas I will be going into now that Im taking my stripper heels off for good!

From a Personnal perpective , Ive been involved in markets pretty much all my life . I'd take note of Melonie's disclaimer .

And without making comment on any particular company ..and have not even looked at this one ( And Wont ) , I'd be rather careful making ANY calls at all right now . And be it a equities market forum or Stripper Web ..lol ..Id be equally cautious of both .

On coming out of Cash ..( In probably over 12 months time ) Id potentially be looking at Resources . I know so many traders and investors .......

Not many would be making " Buy " calls on anything ..Degree or NO Degree ..lol

Always ask yourself ....Why is the poster making such a call ? ..You can 9 /10 answer your own question .

I've got to ask, are we talking about Glen Beck the t.v. personality or is there another Glenn Beck who is financial analyst?.

Caterpillar is good also. I'm not an expert, but they manufacture heavy equipment which is used in construction, as well as when cleaning and rebuilding after natural disasters..which are kinda frequent these days. I personally own it..so my money is where my mouth is, if that matters.

Why not now?..... In a few years $1,800 gold will look like $1,000 gold did a few years ago..... Or Silver...... the poor mans gold.

CEF around 50/50 gold & silver.

^^^ again the usual disclaimers, but keep in mind that Silver is still primarily an 'industrial' metal ... used in catalytic converters, high reliability electronics like cell phones & laptops, and is vitally important in the manufacture of solar cells. As such, a large share of demand for silver is likely to follow consumer trends on auto sales, electronics sales, green energy sales etc.

As to Caterpillar, foreign buyers LOVE Cat equipment ... as long as the US dollar's exchange rate versus European, Asian, and even Indian competitors priced in Euros, Yen or Rupees still makes buying Cat a 'bargain' in terms of their home currency. Caterpillar also has some large future sales volume risk factors from the 'mandated' cutback in the mining of US coal ( driven by coming new super strict EPA regulations on US coal fired power plants ) ... and especially so since they recently acquired Bucyrus whose forte' is mining equipment.

I'm still a gold bug though.

You've done your homework on caterpillar! Impressive. Yah there is upside and downside to every stock. I bought em about 3 months before the tragedy in japan just from listening to good old grandpa telling me to buy companies that have staying power. I bought them to hold for a while. A few others such as chocolate companies, budweiser, and the like..things I know people don't really need but will never go away! Kind of off the anecdotal logic that the economy is bad, so you know there's gotta be more people drinking their blues away! Not sound investment strategy, but it hasn't hurt me yet...

I am hoping you are joking but I have a feeling you are not.

First off why would anyone trust what anyone says about investments on face value without research. All the reasons you have mentioned are pretty shallow reasons.

I have been in banking for ten years; as an activate professional helping others with their financial goals. I actually try to help people learn how to invest on their own. The first lesson I ALWAYS teach is if you hear about it on the news, radio, or paper it is, GENERALLY, already too late for the investment. The big players want out, they market the hell out of it, it goes high, and they pull out.

Lastly, You would be very surprised who comes on to this forum. There are doctors, lawyers, financial professionals, etc. Many of us here at dollar den know what the SEC is and how it works. We have discussed it many times.

That is also why we use disclaimers. In the off chance something comes back to bite us in the ass. If you work for a financial institution they go thru your life with a fine tooth comb. They google employees, credit checks, back ground checks, etc. To them you represent the financial institution to your clients. Employees have been found on sex sites, making bad comments about their employer on fb, on forums complaining etc. all of which got those folks fired. We know because we work it everyday.

As a professional female banker, who never stripped, I try my best to show respect to everyone here but especially the strippers. They deserve it. Please show those of us non strippers , who come here to help, respect as well. You would be surprised what we know and who we are.
Nature knows no indecencies; man invents them. ~ Mark Twain

... not really ! You have to realize that I spent years and years sitting on the laps of Manhattan bankers / brokers / corporate execs - who would talk 'shop' amongst themselves with no idea whatsoever that the blonde haired big boobed 'barbie' on their lap was capable of understanding every single word they said ! And now that I'm down here way south of the border, I have the opportunity to add a global perspective thanks to the many 'well heeled' European as well as North American vacationers and ex-pats who tend to speak very freely when they're 3/4ths 'in the bag' at a beachfront bar or on their private yachts.

Actually, there are a few new 'buy' calls floating around the professional investors' BBS tonight ... buy SDS, buy SDOW, etc.

Buy Halliburton. Theyre going to be the company that goes into Libya and helps restore the oil production facilities there.

Weatherford (WFT) is also another heavy player in the oil industry. They have had a rocky recent past, but IMO they will do well. I also own em.

Any Broker worth his/ or her Salt ..who is calling genuine buys at the moment ..is simply after one thing ..The Comms .

The best financial advice anyone could give right now ( Particularly in the US market ) is sit tight on Cash ...this is only mark 1 .5 .. They are fools to be saying there are " Buy " signals right now .

Well I'll stick with my prediction that $1,800 dollar gold will look cheap years from now..... We are not anywhere near bubble territory yet..... Despite what they say on CNBC.

^^^ the only complication with the 'cash is king' approach is one's definition of which form of cash to hang onto ... Swiss Francs ? US dollars ? Aussie dollars ? Thai Baht ? Given that all are 'fiat' with varying risk of devaluation, some would also argue that today's only real stable cash is gold !

I'm not a stock broker, but I do work with cloud storage on a daily basis. In the online backup segment Carbonite is a bit of a joke...the software is garbage and they are competing with solutions that cost far less or are free for personal use. I can only guess this is a case where there's a lot of hype and money to be made with the IPO, but a few years from now, there's going to be some unfortunate investors left holding an empty bag.

When I talk being in Cash ..Im not too concerned which currency you are holding ..Its going to be up to you , Im comparing being in cash to holding equities , Im not talking about being out of the market forever so the currency makes little difference .
+Except to say ..I wouldn't be holding Thai Barht ..lol ( we can talk about this on another occassion )
    - AUS or US ( AT CURRENT rates , is fine ) Swiss Francs ..Maybe , but not for me .

    - Gold ... well maybe , but I believe there is a current obvious gold bubble , no matter what the shorterm movements .$1800 ..its a high " safety " call ..but agreed , I could be wrong .

IPO s ....ha ha ha ha ...Why would you ? pure speculation ...NOW IS NOT THE TIME . As I said previously round 2 has just began , the entire US financial system is being completely re- rated ....and Man ..

NOWS the time to be in cask $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ...and Wait .

Mike ..Im not saying $1800 is the top ..but it is a bubble . If you go back to the Techno crunch , we can see re- ratings take some time ..Agreed gold could be strong for some time ...personally I wouldn't be buying at $1800 --

Should add ..amoungst the Gloom , no one rings a Bell ..Opportunity will surface ( not yet ) ..and the Opportunities will be big IMHO ...

However , now just aint the time to be playing on the fringes ..jumping into IPOs ..or Ramping individual companies , with extremely light support information .

Best idea ..never ramp any stock , if an IPO needs ramping , you are buying on speculation ..thats B/S .The current climate is not one for speculation ...
