    Default Very Low Calorie Diet?

I've recently gained quite literally a ton of weight. I'm 5'6 and probably around 180. I'm thinking about doing the Kekwick diet. It's a high fat, medium protein, low carb diet where you eat around 1000 calories a day. If I work out is it possible to do this for a month or two without getting flabby? If I switch to a 1500 calorie a day paleo diet after doing this for while will I continue to loose weight?

    Thanks for the help!

high fat doesn't make sense to me... just cut out the junk, increase water and exercise. i try to eat less than 1000cal a day and do lots of cardio 4-6 times a week and yoga 3 times a week... seems to keep the weight gain at bay

*also aside from cutting junk and sweets, cut out a lot of carbs- bread rice and pasta just add tasty but unnecessary calories..

Do some more research. Check out the Atkins Diet. It may work well for you. Check out The Zone diet.

good old fashioned clean eating and exercise is the only way for a lifetime of steady results. like mentioned before...start w/ the basics....cut out all junk, processed, fast food, preservatives etc. drink at least 64 oz of water a day. cut out all sodas diet as well. 30 mins of exercise done at least 3 days a week is a great starting place. what is the point of losing weight if you croak from a massive coronary from all that fat?????? diets do not work...meal plans work..lifestyle changes...are there any other bad habits? smoking /drinking etc?

At 5'6 it is EXTREMLY unhealthy to go below 1200 cals a day. What will end up happening is as soon as you go above 1000 cals you will imediately begin to gain back the weight and when you gain it back it will be 2x harder to lose it again. What i sujest is go on this webiste called Sparkspeople.com and have them make a meal plan a fitness plan and stick to it so that you can lose this weight in a HEALTHY manner. In general though a woman should not eat below 1200 cals a day otherwise there will be negative effects

Although i don't think it's healthy that some women are attempting to live with only 1000 or less calories per day long-term (females actually need closer to 2000 cals per day than 1200!), to the OP can I suggest the negative calorie diet? The aim is to eat food which actually cause your body to burn off more calories in digestion, than they contain when eaten. Like cabbage, celery etc. The cabbage soup diet is a great example of this. They are really only detox and quick/ short term weight loss plans, so shouldn't be used long term (more than a month at most), but if followed to the letter, they yield amazing short term results x

Below 1200 calories is unhealthy for ANY female. Not talking out of my ass this is what my doctor told me. 1200 a day combined with excercise and the weight should melt off in no time and at least with 1200-1500 you can maintain the weight. Anything below that is yoyo deiting...where you lose weight and when you go back to old habits u gain it right back and is unhealthy

i'm going to go out on a limb and say that many people neglect fats in their diet. they've been demonized. if you're going low carb, you NEED to go high fat. good fats: avocado, coconut, olive, etc.

A friend of mine's sister got put up in the hospital for a while because she lost weight the wrong way on low carb and wasn't eating fats.

calorie cycling isn't a bad thing - it works! but generally going below 1200 isn't a good idea. i'd suggest looking at just what you're eating as opposed to calorie content. i'd rather eat 100+ calories of eggs for midday as opposed to a "100 Calorie Pack" snack.

Again, this is not unhealthy for me, and I'm sure there are girls on this board who have similar body types to mine. Low calorie is not something that we should be afraid of when we are dieting. You can eat a very healthy diet on 1000-1200 calories a day. A lot of us cannot lose weight unless we are at or below that range.
Yeah I'm the same as you. I'm petite and I just don't have the metabolism to sustain a higher calorie diet and would never be hungry enough to eat more calories (unless I was eating the wrong foods).

High fat diets will clog your arteries and give you problems with hypertension, cholesterol, high blood pressure to state the least. Some skinny people actually have internal fat around their organs and that "ain't" good. Anyway lean meats, no carbs, a bunch of vegetables and some fruits with lots of water will have you losing weight fast, and you do not need to follow certain rules and crap.

What do you consider high fat? I eat a high fat diet and I am shrinking! I can't stop losing weight.... I eat no grains (well, I eat gluten free granola), no gluten, no dairy, nothing processed, no sodas, and all types of meat/vegetables/nuts/fruit (in moderation) I eat eggs everyday, chicken livers, steaks, animal fats are good for you, if you eating only lean meat is NOT healthy. Stick to monounsaturated fats, my trainer told me almonds for example, although high in fat, your body burns it off really fast, it's instant energy.

I say stop counting your calories/carbs/fat, that's a pain in the ass anyways. Start eating healthy, like how a caveman would eat. None of this man made garbage.

    OP listen to JD.

I've been playing around with my macronutrient ratio forever and I've lost a ton of weight. I tried Kekwick-similar ratios and I FELT softer, only lost 3 lbs in 30 days (at the time I was losing at an average rate of 5-8 lbs/month).

Cutting out everything processed, all refined carbs, gluten, dairy and soda (I still have a diet coke or five a week ) is the way to go for me. No obsessive counting or ratio-calculating, always full, etc.

Combine paleo diet (at about 1200-1500 cal/day for me) + short cardio (30m run 3x/week) + heavy weight lifting sessions (3x/week) = greatly reduced weight and BF% (which ought to be your real concern).

Sorry I overuse parenthesis/punctuation, as a formerly obese gal I get really excited to share what's completely transformed my body.

This is so true. Now I only eat when I am truly hungry..... it did take my body a short time to get used to it, but I eat 1/3 less than I used to now!

By the way, a low calorie diet is the ONLY thing scientifically proven to increase your life span. I will be back with the source for this, my sister told me.

Here's the press release on low calorie diets and life expectancy from the National Institute on Aging: http://www.nia.nih.gov/NewsAndEvents...lowcalorie.htm

Here's another press release from them outlining the results from another study discussing the hazards of low calorie diets (decreased BMR): http://www.nia.nih.gov/NewsAndEvents...ts/calorie.htm

Just to add - if you don't eat enough fat your hair/skin/nails will become brittle, and your fertility might end up compromised (you need the essential oils to make hormones, too!)

If you dip too low with caloric intake, you can actually slow your metabolism. Most dietitians recommend never eating less than 1,000-1,200, so I would assume if you coupled that with muscle maintenance and a physical job (stripping), you could afford to eat a bit more.

Also "negative calorie" foods are just low calorie foods; nothing causes the body to expend more energy to digest it than it would gain from the calorie content. That would imply that you could starve yourself to death from eating pounds of celery.

Your RMR probably already warrants close to 1,000 calories without factoring in intentional or incidental exercise. The best bet is to keep a steady energy input/output balance (small meals throughout the day), and to rely on whole, nutrient-dense foods.
