    Default Community College questions

    1. I'm used to 4 year university where they have dates for final adds, in terms of the last day to join a class. I'm looking at the catalogue schedule for a community college and they just have one date when classes begin and then one day a month and a half later for the last day to drop. Should I assume that in all likelihood, I can join somewhere in the middle of that?

    2. I already have a couple of degrees under my belt but I just want to take a couple of CC classes because I find myself bored with life and I love school. I don't want to deal with all the transcript bullshit so can I just tell them where I went to high school and then just pretend I didn't go to school in between then and now? I mean, since I'd be paying cash and not looking to get funding or loans or anything, it shouldn't matter, right?

Can't you just sign up for a course at a 4 year school as a Continuing Ed student? Those classes have to be a lot better than what you'd find at a CC, better selection of courses too. Unless you're in a degree program, I don't think they need to vet you before letting you take the class.

^I agree but I think the classes are also more expensive. Plus the CC is closer to my house than the universities, and it's still 20 minutes away.

I just think if you have degrees from a regular college, returning to community college will be so disappointing and will be almost like going back to HS. I do some tutoring of CC students around here and I don't know how they got into HS, let alone out of HS and into college courses. Granted, I'm tutoring them in math, which probably isn't what you're looking at.

I went to CC for the first 2 years, and am finishing my degree in a 4 year state school.
The rules as far as enrollment and dropping classes are usually very similar in both kinds of institutions. In other words, I doubt very much that you will be able to enroll in a class a month after it started. There may be some kind of late enrollment, but generally that ends about 1 week into classes.

The only real differences I saw between the two kinds of schools are that the degree programs are different (Associate's and certificate programs vs. bachelor's and master's programs), and CCs tend to have more non-traditional students (older, with jobs and families). Other than that, treat it the same way you treated your university.

I'm not sure about the second question. They probably won't do an in-depth background check on your education. My bf took some college classes (about 2.5 years worth) about 10 years ago, but did not earn a degree. He did not mention this when he enrolled ion CC, and it has not mattered. Your situation is different, though, since you did graduate. You might jeopardize yourself by omitting that, so if you decide not to mention it, be prepared for the possibility that it could cause problems for you. It is usually not that difficult to request an institution to send trancripts for you.

It sounds like you may be thinking of CC like it is a kind of adult-learning center (like LA's Learning Annex). This is not the case - CCs are real colleges, and the rules of enrollment and protocol are as such.

In any case, if you do decide to take some classes, I hope you enjoy them. Best of luck with the whole situation!

The thing with the transcripts is I've gone to maybe 7 universities (sometimes going to more than one at the same time due to needing a class during a certain semester) so it's really not worthwhile for me to go pay $3 per transcript and start that whole avalanche of waiting for them to all come in. It's a giant headache.

I'm not going for a degree but maybe a class here or there to get my scholastic groove back.
I have found a different community college which is slightly farther, and slightly more expensive since it's a different county, but they have classes starting in mid september, and october so I think that's enough time to apply and do any little placement tests they need me to do.

Having done CCs before in the past, they aren't like regular universities. At the universities I've gone to, we had a 2-3 week delay allowed (sometimes you had to get the professor's permission) to add classes. With CCs, the classes and the administration are less demanding (from what I've found, but then again that depends a lot on the teacher as well) so I figured it might be similar.

But, at least with applying to a CC, I can apply and get accepted in like three days (from what my boyfriend's experience has been, and mine own though it's been a few years) versus having to do 2 weeks of applications and sending in extra documentation like transcripts, since most people go in with degree aspirations in mind.

My boyfriend's looking at math and he's scared, and I keep telling him-- look, CC math is going to be as easy if not easier than HS math, but he's letting his own anxieties getting in the way of that.

I think I'd like to take some computer classes like dreamweaver, and...I don't know-- whatever catches my eye, honestly.

There was a really great industrial arts tech program that was privately run out of a warehouse in the last city I lived in, but I didn't take advantage of it and the place I'm at now doesn't have anything like that.

The last school I went to kind of killed my "I love school" vibe, and so I want to start over and see if I can regain it. Plus, I want to be around new people and be accountable for something on a schedule like homework.

The big difference is the courses bar calculators so I have actually had to teach times tables to the kids. The work i saw was very easy with the kids I worked with. Very basic algebra. I could do the whole semester's work on the computer in a couple hours. I won't elaborate on how I know that. That being said, not all the classes carry college credit, at least not in math.

You also don't have to forward transcripts of any kind. You can put your previous schools down if you want but you don't have to deal with transcript stuff. Although if you plan on taking any classes with prerequisites, you might want to have an official copy of the transcript ready to go.

cool, that's useful to know. I figure my GRE and SATs should still be good to forego placement tests but I'm willing to take the placement tests as well.

I have a college degree and I have taken an occasional class at a community college. From what I remember, you don't have to give them any information about your previous education, you can just enroll in the class.

If you're just looking to take some classes on the side for yourself, I think community college is a good idea. A lot of four year colleges are overpriced.

^All 4 yr schools are overpriced. Even though both of my associates r transferable at this point in the recession I dont see the payoff of 4 yr degree. I dont want the 20,000 debt. No thanks. Thats just MHO.

Its smart to take a CC class if someone is simply interested in gaining additional knowledge.
