Default I got a small chip in my rental car windshield? possible penalties?

So I got a small chip in my windshield smaller than the eraser at the end of a pencil, with two tiny little spider leg cracks extending from it a few millimeters.

I bought an over the counter windowshield thing (Permatex brand, fuck you!) from Autozone (thanks for the recommendation and limited selection shit-store!)
    and it did absolutely nothing.

I had to turn it in today and didn't have time this weekend or today to have a little glass shop take care of it for around $50.

What's the possible penalty that I might be facing?

Do you think they'll overlook it?

Anyone have anything similar happen to them?

The car had maybe three other big scratches but they were marked on the rental sheet when I got it.

if you bought the rental insurance then you have nothing to worry about. if not they will probably file a claim through your car insurance company. it also depends on the state

Any damage done while you were in possesion of the vehicle needed to be noted by the agency when you turned it in and you should have been given a report indicating damage. Just like existing damage was noted when you started the rental. If you paid everything owed for usage and they did not give you a damage report, you should be free and clear as that can't really prove the damage was done by you and wasn't done after you dropped it off. They cant just come after you days later and say you are responsible for damage. Otherwise, if you have auto insurance for your own vehicle, then that policy should cover the costs entirely or if no insurance ...then probably the insurance you took out when renting the car would cover it.

I used to work for a rental car company- we charge $35 to fill rock chips.

People who got damage on cars would do all sorts of ridiculous things to try and fix them/hope we didn't notice. With 2500 cars on fleet, damage happens and we're pretty cool with it. We've had vehicles destroyed in fires, stolen, and written off in ways as bizarre as suicide attempts.

You will be responsible for windshield damage, same as if it was your own car, but chips are not expensive to fix- if they notice it. One that small probably won't be a big deal.

^not good to get insurance when you're renting it for months at a time due to car being in shop

$15/day insurance on top of rental fee and taxes gets ridiculous REAL quick.
