This is why I never recommend buying from breeders. That and there are so many animals in shelters (including chis).

Looks like a Chi to me - BUT - I'm not that familiar with Chihuahuas, I've never owed one. I think it's just his fur pattern that's getting him mixed up with a Jack Russel. If he's already 5 lbs then he's a big little guy, but still looks like a classic Chi to my untrained eye...

I totally get why you're questioning it though. When I bought my Toy-Poodle from a breeder everyone thought she was a Maltese. Then she grew and grew and was actually a Miniature Poodle (one size class up). I think the breeder KNEW she was a Mini-Poo and just charged me Toy-Poodle prices becasue they knew I didn't know the difference.

I still love her just the same, she's completely priceless to me.

Still it would bother me if a breeder was lying or withholding information about the dogs heritage. It could be a health concern, y'know?

Any way you could meet the 'parents'?

Edit: Okay, I just watched the youtube videos and now I'm not so sure. That's a big Chihuahua for 4 months....and it really does look like something else is mixed in. No idea. Sorry I couldn't be more help...

I have owned one before...that definitely looks like a mix. Either its a mix or its poorly bred. I say that because of the way his head looks, not really his size or coat color. That said being a mutt he probably has a better skull then most purebred chihuahuas. Mutts are generally more hardy dogs, they are not as delicate.

My chi was 5 pounds fully grown. He was a full coated CKC registered show dog. And yes I did show him in confirmation.

I paid $400 for him. I could never see spending $1000 on a dog unless it was a guarantee show winner from a well known pedigree.

He doesn't look pure to me... probably one parent looked pure but actually wasn't. You can actually get a DNA test to find out if you are really interested. It costs about $150 here... not sure about canada. I don't know how people could think he's a jack though... people are dumb! Although without seeing him in real life its really hard for me to figure out what I would guess as the other breed. Its actually something about his nose that throws me off. Chis usually have a more pointed nose. His eyes don't look as far apart as I would usually see either but again really hard to tell just from a photo. Does it matter? I suspect one of my shih tzu has chihuahua in her... so cute!

Chis' can be quite big. Some 10-12 pounds.

The akc definition when it comes to weight:

Weight – A well balanced little dog not to exceed 6 pounds. Proportion – The body is off-square; hence, slightly longer when measured from point of shoulder to point of buttocks, than height at the withers. Somewhat shorter bodies are preferred in males. Disqualification – Any dog over 6 pounds in weight.

That said some breeders desire a larger breeding bitch and a smaller male. The reason behind that being supporting puppies and a healthy pregnancy.

My dog's mother was 8 pounds and his father was 3 pounds.

he looks very much like a jack russel mix... I have a half chi / half jack russel mix and your puppy looks a lot like my dog.

I think the head is different bc in pure chis the bridge of the nose is like at a 90 degree angle. Like, you can see it well in the first pic of silk55 dog
In mix breeds, the bridge of the nose is never like that. At least I have never seen it

Bridge of the nose looks a little too wide / elongated, and the angle of the ears seems kinda low. Cute little bugger though.

Being mixed is going to be better for his health, temperment, and longevity. Although, jack russell terrier / chihuaha mix..probably my last choice in breed mix due to experience. Still, he's a sweetheart and a good boy and has a mama who loves him, he's going to be a great doggie!

my mate has a chi, and urs looks like a cross with somthing, im not sure.

on another note, ive always wanted a pomchi, google image them, there adorable.

However when i do get round to having a dog id much prefer to troll round the shelters to find a young dog that needs a home, and also buy one as a pup, prob most likly a german shep or similar. Then probably a chi or pomchi lol, im gonna be dog mad when the house is finished decorating! haha. oh an a bearded dragon also, sooooo freaking cute!

yeah i kinda wnet on a lil. lol
    sorry ><

I have persians and they always come with papers and are cfa registered as well as vet papers. Not sure how registering works in canada? You said you love him and are happy with him but if they charged you purebred prices for a mixed chi I would be mad. That's unethical.

It is a misconception that a chi has to be tiny. That said - here is an attention whore post of my sweet, 10lb, papered, chi

hrm... that didn't work... lets see if I can just post to facebook and link my album...

Well I have had two purebred dogs. Neither cost me over $500. Just because there are "papers" does not mean they cost more. The CKC (Canadian Kennel club) and AKC papers only cost the breeder maybe $40. CKC is the Canadian version of the AKC and registration works the same way.

It astounds me that people are willing to buy a dog from a pet shop or backyard breeder and pay $2000+ for a dog that is not registered. Or even worse the people buying designer dogs for higher prices (I have seen "chugs" at PJ's pet for $3500). Oh and of course they come registered from a bogus registry. Up here CKC registered dogs cannot be sold at pet stores. Also its a federal crime to call a dog "purebred" without the CKC papers.

All recognized Canadian-born purebred dogs must be registered with the CKC at birth in order to be considered purebred, and only dogs imported from other countries can be registered with the CKC when they are adults. In addition, all dogs registered with the CKC must be permanently identified, either by microchip or tattoo. It is the responsibility of the seller or importer of the dog, not the buyer, to register and permanently identify the dog.

The CKC is incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act, a federal statute under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture. The CKC includes approximately 25,000 individual members and over 700 breed clubs across Canada. They register purebred dogs; act as the sanctioning body for dog shows, performance events, field trials, tracking tests and hunt tests; maintain the official records for these events; award championship titles based on performance; and speak out on major issues concerning dog ownership and the health & welfare of dogs across Canada. The CKC registers approximately 100,000 purebred dogs every year and the registry currently contains over 3 million purebred dog records.

Click Here to view the Canadian Kennel Club Code of Ethics.

Note: In Canada, in order to be designated as "purebred", a dog must be registerable/registered with the Canadian Kennel Club or another association under the Animal Pedigree Act. See Below for further details on Registries in Canada.

^ Yes in the U.S. it does. I've been raising and showing persians for years and if they don't come with papers here they probably aren't prurebread!

Also nobody in the U.S. who shows or breeds would buy without papers. In the u.s. if they don't have papers they probably aren't going to be up to the cfa breed standards.
