Default Motorbike diaries-- i.e. my vacation update

So i figured i would update on what i am doing while traveling, in case anyone cares. i think my only other update was when i posted about my visits to ping pong shows in bangkok (i didnt even update after to include the bird show i saw in Patong, which is, in fact, exactly what you think it is ).

Im in north vietnam now in Hanoi. Just arrived here by bus. Thus far i have done thailand, cambodia, and south/central vietnam. In a couple of days my friends and i are going to rent motorbikes (somewhere in between mopeds and motorcycles, still havent figured out which one yet) and take the train up to Sapa and ride back down to hanoi on said bikes over a few days. Sapa is that area of Vietnam that you have seen pictures of with all the rice terraces. Should be scenic... we aer going to try to stay off the main highways so we dont get hit by a bus : . The traffic here is beyond insane. Seriously. So wish me luck!

Hope everyone else's summer is going well!

customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Sounds pretty cool. Have you picked up the languages? I've heard in many of those countries the people are very nice.

picking up languages here is not like picking up a western language. For starters, Thai and Khmer (language of Cambodia) dont even use the same alphabet as we do. Secondly, Thai and Vietnemese (which actually does use our alphabet, sort of) are both tonal languages. So what sounds like the same word to can mean totally different things over here. And the gramatical structure is way different.

so yea, havent picked anything up. Im fluent in english and spanish so i am pretty sure if i spent a month in france i would pick up french (and same with other european languages) but it would require SERIOUS effort to pick up any southeast asian language. actually i hear indonesian is easy... but other than that it doesnt come easily.

I didn't know the languages don't use the same alphabet. I too speak Spanish (and a bit of French)so those related languages I know I could pick up, but not these languages. How is the food?

the food in thailand was completely awesome. as in you could get the best meal of your life for less than a dollar from a street vendor.

its more hit and miss in cambodia and vietnam. im looking forward to my return to thailand just so i can get some delicious fried rice or thai massaman curry.

I am so completely envious of you right now. I would LOVE to do Cambodia and vietnam! They're top of my list of places to go.

I've always thought that if I were to ever get married I'd want to honeymoon in Thailand. From friends' photos and stories, it just seems like such a beautiful and romantic place. I'm glad to hear that the food is awesome as well. I love lots of strong flavors, but I can't handle much heat pepper-wise. Is the street vendor food very spicy, or is it kind of hit-or-miss when it comes to spice?

I'm so jealous. I hope you're having an awesome time.

So....bird show.....did the bird live? Was it like a canary or like a blue Jay?

Sorry that just spurred some crazy mental images.

Your trip sounds crazy and amazing and fun. Send some picts!

personally i dont really consider thailand romatic. they have beautiful beaches but theyve been whored out to western tourists and stripped of anything culturally worthwhile. Actually, thats a lot of southeast asia. But especially south thailand.

Street food is hit and miss spicy wise. *usually* they see that you are white and tone it down. I usually had to specificlaly request for spicy food beforehand so they made it spicy (im addicted to spicy food).

yep it survived. it was some sort of yellowish bird. but yea, girl just walks onto stage, reaches into vag, and pulls out a bird that flaps its wings, then puts it into a cage. bizarre.

So i learned to ride a proper motorcycle. Made it through hanoi traffic during rush hour wihtout stalling hte bike once. As an idiot american who never learned to drive a manual vehicle or use a clutch till a couple days ago, i was pretty proud of myself.

and in case you are wondering what i am dealing with, here are some youtube videos of hanoi traffic:

yes it is actually that bad. and no, i didnt stall it once (ok once in the VERY beginning on the ride home.) Who has two thumbs and is awesome? This girl.

When i get back to hanoi i am going to try to find sme way to tape my iphone to my bike so i can videotape what it is like to ride a bike through traffic here.

    Very cool

The thrill of biking is intoxicating at first but know your limits! The moment you start to feel comfortable is when the temptation to push it beyond your skill level starts. If you're gona be doing some riding at higher speeds at least spend a few minutes practicing an emergency stop...number one skill you need to avoid a date with the pavement.

    holy shit.

so i spent the last week motorcycling through north vietnam and it was fucking awesome. seriously. we got wayyyy out in the boonies and it was beautiful and the people were awesome. it was intense though... sometimes the road would just dissapear and we would be stuck going through mud, which would sometimes require pushing our bikes. and vietnam does not often have guard rails so if you look down sometimes it will be a wtf moment. there was a couple of moments that were pretty scary (got run off the road by an oncoming bus driving on the wrong side of the road) but overall it was an incredible experience. i recommend anyone who goes to SEA do a trip like this. My friend and I are headed to Laos today, and we are going to try to get cheap bikes there to travel Laos by bike. Beats the hell out of bus travel (which is often just as scary anyway).

i actually do have some photos thanks to my friend who took pictures. maybe ill post a few later.
