    Default Hair Extensions?

My hair does not grow... It has been shoulder length for ten years now, and I only get it trimmed every few months. I REALLY want to get extensions, but I don't have the slightest clue of what kind is best and how much they usually are.

I have tried clip ins, but I want ones that actually stay in for as long as possible. I hated the clip ins Plus, being a dancer... I want to make sure they don't fall/slip out while on stage because I am a very active performer! Any tips/advice appreciated!

Maybe glue some tracks in? Not the best method, but inexpensive.....

Or you can try changing how you put in your clip ins. Mine used to slide out all the time too. You have to tease your hair a little at the root, where the clip goes. After you tease it, spray some hairspray on there. Wait for the hairspray to dry all the way, then push the clip down at the base of the rats nest you just made, so that the teased hair holds the clip in at the root. I hope that makes sense....

Yeah, I'd rather not use glue because I don't really want to damage my hair.

I've tried teasing but I still didn't like the outcome. Plus, you could see the clips when I flipped around my hair... thanks for the help though!

Please don't do the strand by strand method. You will damage your hair sooo much!

I was under the impression teasing was awful for your hair.

The outside of your hair shaft is made up of all this scales and they all point downwards towards the end of your hair. When you backcomb you're forcing the scales to stick out - this is what gives you the controlled tangling and and therefore volume - but they're also not protecting the cortex (what they're there to do) and can even chip or break off. Here's healthy hair:

    And here's backcombed/teased hair:

OP, your hair does grow! No one's terminal length (the length at which your hair just sheds or falls out) is at their shoulders, there's got to be some kind of damage going on. Here's a basic introduction to types of hair damage that cause issues like yours and how to prevent them.

I have chemically damaged hair (this one time I think it was a great idea to go blonde. It wasn't.) and its way too short for my tastes (broke off then a major cut to prevent more damage).

There's no hair extension that's 100% invisible, but hair-friendly-ER methods of extensions: clip-ins (NO TEASING) or micro-loop extensions with silicone lining. I had 2-3x as much shedding with strand-by-strand glue-ins than with the microloops. Here's where I buy mine and here's how they're applied. They're easy enough to have a friend put in and then take to go get cut. They're not damage-free, but they're better than glue (weft or strands) and teasing.

I want to try skin wefts next but I'm concerned about the amount of damage they might cause. I've also never seen them in person so I don't know how realistic they would look. Its basically a semi-permanent way of getting a clip-in look that lies flatter to your head.

J.D. has it 100% right about the clip ins. Watch a hair tutorial. Get some good hairspray. Buy some that have clips that match your hair color (mine are black clips, black hair, for example). I used to be so paranoid about mine falling out until a girl at work showed me how to do it correctly. And now I flip my head around, do pole tricks, and have had customers even pull on them and they don't budge.

Before the clip-ins, I did the glue thing. I really don't suggest doing that. They don't stay that long, are a lot of work, get expensive buying new tracks of hair all the time and worst of all, damage your hair. Like, I seriously have a couple bald spots and I haven't used the glue for almost 2 years.

Yes, teasing will damage your hair, along with hairspray. I just try to gently backcomb, very gently and slowly, and only in the spot that the clip will be placed. I've done every type as well, and for me even the silicone lined micro links gave me bald spots, actually those were the worst (for me). I think a lot has to do with how they are applied, if the stylist doesn't put an equal ratio of your hair + the extension hair in the micro link, it will be too much weight on your natural hair and pull it out at the root. Also, if you don't get high quality hair, all the everyday tugging and brushing alone will be too much for your natural hair to handle. For me, the clip ins are the least damaging, because I don't wear them very often.

That's why I like to do it myself with a gf - you can make the strands they attach the link to are a) thick enough and b) all from exactly the same spot on your head. The "extension artist" I went to for keratin bonding screwed up on both of those and I ended up with a little bald spot here and there.

If you do go strand by strand make sure you're using a loop brush (obvi).

If you want hair extensions, dish out the money for them to be professionally done instead of doing them yourself. You'll save money and your hair in the long run.

But do not get them braided in. EVER. I had mine braided in the first time I ever had hair extensions and good god was is hell. It hurt to sleep, it itched like hell, my hair tangled like a big rats nest, and when I got them "professionally" removed, I ended up bald. I was later told that braids should only be done on African American or extremely thick hair. I have very very fine hair.

Go for cold fusion or adhesive base fusion.

I can't believe a stylist would actually do that to you knowing you clearly have thin hair! Braids are definatly made for thicker hair types that should be common knowledge.

Clips ins, even though you don't like them. Every other kind damages your hair really bad over time. Glue, tape, braids, sewn in, fusion. Trust me, I've had all of them before over the past few years. My favorites are seamless weft (tape and protein glue), but those really damaged my hair. I just use a ton of clip ins now and its 100% non-damaging. Plus, I can try out new colors, highlights, and lengths very easily. And clip ins don't come out unless someone either pulls them out or you take them out. They're really sturdy. I would have thought they would fall out (especially because I have silky hair), but they never do.

It also depends what kind of hair you naturally have. I have normal to thin straight-ish "white girl" hair. Clip ins would obviously not work if your hair is kinky or super curly. Otherwise, you'd have to do like a lace front wig. Those look SO WEIRD on me for some reason. My head is like the wrong shape or something, lol.

Microlinks are the best for no damage. I had them on for about 10 months and took it out 3 months ago with no damage to my real hair since my hair is long enough now( I wear clip ins for photoshoots only) microlinks are about $600 to put in and upkeep about $150 per month since they will slip out a little.

Are those like HairLocs? There is a salon near me that offers HairLocs, which seem to be similar to what you are saying. They slip out of place, but they are not very damaging.

You can get better hair than HairLocs at Medusa Australia online, plus you can make sure they're applied in a way that doesn't damage your hair.

Thanks so much for this site. I am going to buy them... Im usually against hair extensions.. but these seem good. I had hot fusion extensions with kertain bond and they screwed up my hair badly!!! I got 2 blad spots that are still growing after a year. The hairdressor applied too thick of a bond with my natural hair which resulted in why they were falling out within 2 weeks!

I use clip-ins at work, I do not tease my hair, but if applied properly they will hold in. Buy hair clips that have a rubber/silicone end to them when a good clip hold.

They're good and well-priced. Make sure that you have a friend to help you apply them and that they are taking a good, thick section of your hair and its all hair from the exact same spot. If you start taking a hair from behind your ear and locking it into a microlink at the back of your head its going to break. Same goes for really thin strands, they break off soooo easily. I had a really bad experience with keratin-bonded, the bonds were really thick and chunky/goop-y looking and it broke off so much hair.

I want to try their wavy versions, but the wet 'n wavy ones at qlassy extensions look better in the pictures... what to do...

RE: clips: the girl behind the desk at my gym wears her metal-only clips for 3 weeks at a time, in the shower and everything, and they don't come out. I've been meaning to ask her where they're from... She showed me the clip and there was no silicone or rubber.

Would you recommend this for thin hair then? I think I'll only need 50 per head! WHen I got fusions she used about 60 and they were too heavy for my head. I think Im going to order 100 just in case I\ll mess up or need a new set so I wont pay for shipping again.

Hello Gorgeous Hair Extensions, are good extensions but they look about a month to come in, so email back and forth was a struggle from the shipper. But they have lasted me a year in a half are still in good cond. But I also have thin hair where I dont need many peices (i only use half of the pack). But I think they are good, check them out!

Wow, you should ask her where she got them. I cant even sleep in mine nor last in them longer than 12 hours. Mine dont have silcone/rubbers on the clips, but the clip is very sturdy compared to other extentions I've had where the clip barely clipped into the hair.

How long have you had the loop extensions btw?

The first time I got extensions I had the individual strands glued in. It took about 4 hours, cost about $2,000 + maintenance every few weeks, and was extremely uncomfortable from the moment I got them until I finally decided I couldn't handle them anymore. Next I got the skin weft extensions and really liked them. I bought my own hair for about $400 (for 2 colors), then my stylist charged me $200 to put them in. It only took 30-40 minutes + touch ups whenever I got my real hair cut & the hair lasted for almost a year. I could sleep comfortably in them, wear a ponytail.... Now I'm in new York where everything costs an arm and a leg and nobody seems to care about doing a good job unless it will get their name in a fashion magazine so I just wear clip ins or go natural. I haven't had damage from any method so far. I have really fine strawberry hair but lots of it. Hope that helps.

The same thing happened to me. Freakin sucked!

I've heard that the fusion techniques are rather damaging as well because they put alot of weight on your individual hair follicles...after my brush with baldness I have sworn to never wear anything but clip-ins.

I am currently growing my hair to just above my waist and am using clip in extension untill then. I have tried various other types of extensions and feel that clip ins keep your hair in the best condition and they are economical. There is no need to go to a salon and spend
3K on some "one of a kind" infusion extensions, (which i mistakenly did). I currently sew in my own clips because I feel the quality of the hair is better than ones with the clips already sewn in. The metal ones work the best, I find plastic clips don't hold as well.

if you had trouble with clip ins try a different brand. I use headkandy, they are not super expensive and i think the quality is great, the hair is super thick and the clips they use are very discreet. check reviews and find a brand that would work for your hair type. Ive used a couple that hurt my scalp, the hair was thin, or the clips were lumpy until i found headkandy and im in love with them. ive had these extensions for over a year and they are not damaged. I love being able to take them out and massage my scalp in the shower.

^ Good to know as I was going to try them out a few years ago but found another brand that was excellent to start but the quality's gone down and they are only lasting around 30 wears and 4 washed. I'll give headkandy a try!

I should have listened to you! But at that point, I had already had my Hairlocs consultation at the salon and order placed...

I just had them put in yesterday and I'm not impressed with the quality of hair at all. It's so tangly and thick in a bad way. But since I spent so much damn money, do you have any advice to maintain it and keep it looking as nice as possible? During my consultation, the woman (who is highly reputable in my area) told me that there are no refunds on the hair from the company so I'm assuming thats just not an option :/
