Default Cuba Releases Lung Cancer Vaccine

    http://www.popsci.com/science/articl...cancer-vaccine

"...The vaccine has already been tested in 1,000 patients in Cuba and is being distributed at hospitals there free of charge. That’s a big deal for a country where smoking is part of the national culture and a leading cause of death. If it proves as successful as researchers say it is, it should give those suffering from lung cancer reason to celebrate--just not with a Cohiba."

Wtf is this legit? And if so why is this not on the front page of every newspaper? The story hits close to my heart as I lost my father to lung cancer 2 years ago.

If this is true then it's not on front pages because Cuba is a country USA hates. Why they still hate them I don't know since China is a far worse country and they own the USA at this point.

I've always said that someone had a vaccine for cancer but not releasing it.

    I think it's possible.

I think that too much money is made keeping patients sick and in the hospital.

i am very pro-cuba so anything i say will be biased. me and many friends hoped that when obama entered office, we would be able to travel there more easily.

No, the US does not control the news media here. In fact, if anything, the news media would love to trumpet anything positive there...

It's not news probably more because it hasn't been tested in any other country than Cuba. And honestly, would you trust anything that Cuba says about something like this?

The article says it doesn't cure it, or keep people from getting cancer. It says that it turns it into a chronic, manageable disease.

Personally, until it's tested by the FDA, I call BS. Cuba comes up with a vaccine? Uh....yeah...I'll believe that when I see it tested in a first world country.

Actually the media is controlled by the US elite, ie the owners. I know, I used to work in it and it is very biased depending on the way the particular media wants you to think (and I blame both sides).

I don't know if I believe this, but I do think someone has a vaccine and is hiding it. Why I don't know, except that with a vaccine that would cut down medical expenses dramatically.

there are at least two other 'vaccines' at a similar stage of development to Cuba's CimaVax ... BVax and GLP25 ... that have been under development for years in the USA. The only real 'news' released is that the Cuban gov't has approved the use of CimaVax based on a comparatively small amount of testing. The US drugs must undergo far more extensive testing before receiving a USFDA approval. And of course the producers of CimaVax ( a Cuban gov't laboratory ) don't have to be worried about lawsuits from relatives of dead CimaVax patients, whereas the private sector drug companies developing BVax and GLP25 do !!!

Also please note that CimaVax ( or for that matter BVax or GLP25 ) are NOT vaccines in the classical sense of a vaccine 'preventing' a disease from establishing itself by providing the person receiving the vaccine with 'artificial immunity'. Instead these 'vaccines' inhibit the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells AFTER a patient has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

My condolences guys. Seeing someone go from cancer is one of the hardest things to go through ever. I saw things I will never forget. Let's hope this vaccine thing is real and actually does some good.

Cancer though we call it a Disease is a genetic aberration.

I don't know how you can vaccinate against something not caused by a virus or bacterium.

I am skeptical. I will wait for it to be peer reviewed around the world.

well theres no reason a Cuban scientist is less likely to come up with a solution than anyone else in the world. Since there is no financial benefit to becoming a scientist or doctor in Cuba those who are actually want to be in those professions vs in our countries where people are motivated by more than just passion.

Ive lost 5 family members to lung cancer and Ive studied cancer both in my previous degree and now. I would be interested to learn more about this.

There's a huge reason....money. It takes a lot of money to do the research on things like this. While I'm not totally saying it's BS, I find it hard to believe that Cuba of all places would come up with a groundbreaking anti-cancer treatment before countries like the US, or ones in Europe.

That said, I just read some more about this...apparently the reason it's not HUGE NEWS is that if this works, it doesn't completely prevent lung cancer...it makes it easier to manage. It's one more bullet in the gun, but people would still need radiation, chemotherapy, and maybe surgery. It helps, but it's not some lung cancer panacea.

We'll see if it's for real.

I lost my Grandfather this year in February due to Lung Cancer, it was extremely difficult to watch him his last few months, he was always active and could do for himself, and then went to not being able to stand without a cane, and then he couldn't even get out of bed. The last few months he deteriorated so quickly. I went to the hospital to see him as often as I could, and then he started home hospice and got worse! He was on so many pain meds I couldn't talk to him because he had a hard time communicating. It was very sad. The last couple days, he was trying so hard to just stand up, he wanted to walk around, and he couldn't. I tried to help him get up but I wasn't strong enough to hold him up. It was so hard for me. My Grandmother passed in 2009 from Emphysema and COPD but I was able to talk to her just fine until the day she passed. My Grandfather on the other hand I couldn't talk to him.

The medicine made him confused so when he would try to talk it was just really bad, he didn't know his days, or the time it was. I really miss my Grandparents a lot. I haven't read all of the responses but I agree if there is something out there to help Lung Cancer patients it needs to be in the States.

I remember when my Grandfather was in the hospital one of the guys that checked people in, said I visited a lot. I said of course I do!!!! He is my Grandfather I love him!!! It makes me sad to realize there are probably so many other elderly people who suffer, and no one is at their bed side.

A part of me secretly wants to adopt an elderly couple in my life, because I just miss having my Grandparents around, and the knowledge and the stories they shared with me. I don't have it anymore, and a piece of my heart is gone.

Sorry I am probably going off topic, but it makes me sad. I hope there is a cure for Cancer one day, and I wished people would stop smoking. I don't think people realize what they are doing to themselves, if you had to sit with a Cancer patient in his last days, I think people would be quicker to quit. I hate it. I am very anti-smoking. I have always been that way, but even more so now that I have lost two of my favorite people from a smoking related illness.

I wish they would outlaw smoking. If they are so concerned about the health effects of all these other drugs then smoking should be included.

^ When was pregnant with my daughter my daughters fathers, father was diagnosed, he died around 4 weeks before she was born. It was awful because he new and he would call me into the room and just cry and hug me( hard times) then 3 years later my dad dies after he was hit by a drunk driver and they found it funny thing he was same age as my ex father. They were able to operate on my dad but he dies 3 months later and they said they got it all. My ex's mother had it too after the dad and they removed hers and she's fine that was 10 years ago. Oh and my fiancee who we broke up 3 years ago his dad died at 60 from it 4 years ago. All were smokers except my fiancees dad and my ex's dad quit like 10 years before they were diagnosed.

Smoking is more addictive than heroine. I seriously hate it. My dad smokes and a fear everyday that his second hand smoke is going to kill my mom. He's tried to stop so many times and he can't. It's so wrong that it is legal it makes me so mad! People seriously think "oh it won't happen to me".. Well my grandpa was 58 and my uncle was 55... Happened to them. Ughhhh it makes me so angry. Ive said this before there will never be a "cure" only better treatments. Cancer is extremely complex and occurs differently in individual. There's several mutations that occur and not necessarily in the same order or timeframe. I do know better treatments will come but they won't save everyone.

^ Ill admit I don't know much about cubas resources but I have been there and its not anything like what I think most people expect. Other than falling apart buildings and old cars, its very very clean. There are no homeless people. Everyone is playing baseball in the streets. Lots of people are very well educated. Obviously communism is pretty shit but there are still good things that come from it. Cubas life expectancy is as high as the states I think. They have no resources but they are good at using what they have. The US probably wastes the same amount of resources that cuba uses. You can still achieve with little, people do it everyday.

Anyway, of course it'll have to be tested by the FDA but that could take forever and just because the FDA doesn't approve it immediately doesn't mean it's BS. For example, gummy bear implants have been the implant of choice in every country (developed or not) besides the US for years, I believe a decade....we are still waiting for the FDA to approve them. Talk about behind the times.
There is huge money in medicine like this, and plenty of capital to fund it. There's no grand conspiracy. It's not the US government that is superior, it's the US system. We have most of the top universities in the world...major centers of medical research...billions of dollars going in to this. Cuba is a relative backwater. They can barely keep running motor vehicles there.

I hope this is true...it would help...but I'll believe it when I see a real country approve it. If you think Cuba is real...well...no offense...

For chrissake, can we please keep the political crap out of this? Don't we have the new rule on the site about politics? It is completely possible to discuss Cuban research on cancer without dismissing it because it's from Cuba.

or at least outlaw it in public places so that those who don't smoke, don't have to breathe in the poison coming from those who do.

Yeah, this is off topic but I was so amped about getting to see Cuba for myself. IDK if that will ever happen though. I heard you have to sneak in by boat because they will flag anyone with an American passport at the airport.

Found an old article where it seems like they are talking about something similar being tested in the US? It's from 2010 so I don't know if it's related or not.
    http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/dpp/news...ted-in-memphis

And actually it seems that this project has been going on since the early 1990s. Also, there have been clinical trials in Cuba, Canada, and the UK.
    http://articles.cnn.com/2009-02-19/h...r?_s=PM:HEALTH
The article also mentions two similar lung cancer vaccines under development in the U.S, GVAX and BLP 25.

I have to say as well to people who seem to believe that Cuba is some destitute backwater country, that yes it's not an extremely wealthy nation, but they do allocate large parts of what they have to education and medicine. There are super modern hospitals and research facilities mixed in with all the decaying buildings and cars held together by duct tape. You are judging a house by the state of its front door so to speak.
