    Default Binge Drinkers (Amy Winehouse)

I'm not sure exactly how I ended up at this article, my search was actually for hypoallergenic skin care products. I can only assume it was something I was meant to see and wanted to share it with others who are prone to binge drinking. It's an interview with Amy Winehouse's father and the cause of her death.

He said the Grammy-winning jazz singer, who famously struggled with a crippling alcohol and drug addiction, had quit drinking before her death on July 23 at the age of 27. She'd suffered a series of seizures "brought on by this binge drinking and then stopping," and thinks a seizure killed her. "She should have detoxed medically," he said.

"We really felt like we were out of the woods," Winehouse said of his daughter, who'd been in and out of rehab for alcohol in recent months. "When she wasn't drinking, she was absolutely on top of the world."

A toxicology report stating the official cause of death will be released next month. An earlier report found "no illegal substances" in her system but there were traces of alcohol and Librium, a prescription drug to combat anxiety and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Her family alleges she had not taken drugs in three years.

    The full article:

When the news of her death hit the airwaves, personally I just assumed she overdosed on heroin. I figured perhaps she increased her dosage to reach the desired euphoric high because after time smaller doses are not as effective.

The article really struck me. Even though it was probably the mixture of alcohol and Librium, it's enough to make me think.

    .......she died from a seizure......

I've never had a seizure after one of my binge drinking episodes but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Why not? There are a number of camgirls who binge drink. Although YOU may not do it, I know quite a few of them who do and it started as liquid courage.

Haha- I've been known to binge drink. I'm going to Vegas this weekend and that will be one big weekend binge!

I'm just saying, this should probably be posted in "The Lounge".

The thing is that it's not only the drinking phase that can have a damaging impact. The coming down phase in many cases (not just with alcohol) can be just as dangerous if not even more so to someone with a long history of abuse. This is why medical detox is so important to someone with an addiction. The seizures in this case were caused by the coming down phase of detox, the brain becomes so dependent on the substance the person is addicted to that it freaks out when that substance is no longer there. This is also why coming off of anti-depressants should be medically supervised and not just done on your own.

This is very important information that everyone should be aware of. How many of us either have had an addiction to something or we are close to someone who has? The majority of us.

this is absolutely true. i am in a program right now and they say you should NEVER go cold turkey, set goals to LIMIT use and gradually keep going. lots of addicts are all or nothing, and as hard as it is to maintain your goals/boundaries, i think it's one of the most important things to recognize when trying to beat addiction.

    still so sad about amy.

what a great loss. she really did seem like a good person with a good heart.

everyone out there who is struggling with addiction - i'm reaching out my hand to you - all the best of luck....we can do it.
