I quit eating red meat about last year and I must say I feel better about myself. Is there anyone here who has also quit eating red meat? Do you miss it? What do you substitute for in (pasta sauces, hamburgers etc?)I usually use ground chicken or turkey.

I have not stopped eating red meat completely....but I do limit my intake to maybe once a month or every other month. I just don't like red meat. I eat a ton of musrooms now though...big portabellas. I made some tonight. I marinade them like I do steaks, and eat them with salads or just alone. I also use them in pastas and stuff.

Seitan, tofurkey, soy meats, etc. I personally hate red meat (and white too most of the time) and won't eat it. Only fish/seafood or "fake meat". You really can't tell the difference.

I am a raw foodist (just fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds all raw and organic) so yeah...no red meat. Never really ate it before either but there are lots of good veggie burgers. Ground turkey is a great option for you. I used to eat a lot of ground turkey before going raw.

Good choice btw, I've been reading more and more about the ill effects of red meat mostly due to the diet the animals are fed and how they are raised.

Well, if it works for everyone..I personally got very sick from leaving it out of my diet & I did eat chicken/fish. Especially after a surgery. I'd had impacted/infected wisdom tooth removed..it took me a very very long time to heal. Age may be a factor also, in my situation.
I buy organic rib eye steaks from Tr.Joe's. I try to have 'em at least a couple of times per month. They come 2 to a pkg., & with a veg/salad make a great meal.
I also eat vegetarian meals & love 'em but I can not go completely meatless

i gave it up in the 90s and never looked back.

the taste of red meat or pork never appealed to me. so i didnt crave it, and i didnt even appreciate the vegetarien substitutes that were made to taste like meat. when making sauces i use veggies or sometimes seafood such as lump crabmeat or baby shrimp.

congrats on giving up red meat. u can still get enough iron without meat. if anything, studies show that the iron in plant sources is more readily absorbed and used by the human body than the iron from animal sources such as red meat. i eat mostly veggies with occasional seafood and my iron is good even during my pregnancy. to get enough iron, make sure u eat lots of leafy greens, beans, soy, and dairy (esp yogurt). multivitamins with iron in it help too but u still gotta eat enough iron rich foods, since natural sources of iron and vitamins are taken up by the body alot more than vitamins taken in the form of a pill.

I've done the opposite - I went from strict vegan to vegetarian and now I am back eating fish and meat and I feel so much healthier.

I eat red meat probably once or twice a month. It is unhealthy and I don't crave it. There are so many different things in the world to eat that doesn't include red meat. By the time the average American is middle aged, they will have 5 lbs of undigested red meat sitting in their colon. Think of how disgusting that is! Red meat is harsh on your digestive system. A lot of pot bellied people eat a lot of beef. I'm not a vegetarian BTW nor do I want to be.

I've been pescetarian (no red or white meat at all) for 17 years now. I eat everything but meat... and sprouts... yuck! I enjoy vegetarian food like tofu and quorn etc, but those are just nice and healthy options anyway. I don't go out of my way to "make up" for a lack of meat.

I'm not too fond of red meat either. There are so many other mammals that are healthier and tastier; pork, lamb, rabbits...they're all tastier, and healthier than beef.

Except for bacon and sausages, pork is actually very healthy.

I haven't eaten red meat since my husband left for the military, and I realized after a couple of weeks that I felt a lot better. I don't feel as sluggish as I did before. When at the gym, I feel like a get a better workout. I seem to be losing weight quicker than I did before. And this may be totally in my head, but I feel like I don't really get snack food cravings now like I did when I ate a lot of red meat. Like I said, that might be a total coincidence. But I'm liking where I'm going with this. I doubt I'll make it big thing, like giving it up completely, but I think eating it very, very rarely--like less than once a month--may be in my best interests.

I tried to be a vegetarian for about 4 days. I decided to go back to eating meat after I fainted.
