    Travel The Travel Thread

The fun type of travel. not the travel for work type of travel.

so where have y'all been? What have you done? What's your favorite places? And where do you want to go? Any recommendations?

Right now I am in Laos. I have been to Kenya, Malaysia, London (all 3 when i was a kid), Argentina (high school exchange student), Aruba (carribean beach resort bullshit), Canada, the states (42/50), Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. My favorite spot on the planet is still New Orleans, and i doubt this will ever change. Phnom Penh, the capital of cambodia, is in second place.

This december I want to travel india by motorcycle. I have decided this is probably best done with a friend, partly to make bike trouble easier to deal with and partly because i have heard negative things about females traveling alone in india (and my experience in the strip clubs wiht men from india often confirms this generalization). If anyone has traveled india, especially if you have spent a lot of time there and gotten off the beaten tourist path, i would love to hear about your experiences!
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I would love to travel often but it seems like I would need a buddy for the places I want to go. Been to Germany, Austria, Virgin Islands, Mexico, New Mexico thru to Florida up the coast to West Virginia to Ohio back down to the south (a nice couple of road trips there).

I want to visit Zaknthos, Greece, a few countries of Central America, China's countryside, and the South Pacific. When I was younger the movie Hideous Kinky made me want to go to Morocco .

I'll second the thing about India. In general in all countries you should watch your safety, especially when travelling alone as a female. I've heard pretty bad things about Egypt and India and most Middle Eastern countries and also Turkey. Don't think you're invincible, because there will be creeps and there are no bouncers except for yourself when you travel unless you go with friends. I think if you'd google online about traveling alone as a female, there will be some pointers on some blogs...there might be country-specific suggestions.
It's great there are so many ladies exploring places! It definitely takes an adventurous spirit and also some courage and confidence to explore the unknown. When I traveled to my first non-english speaking country, France, I remember feeling so nervous... about pronunciations, getting around, possible rudness. Traveling can be a great confidence-booster and maturing life experience.

Let's see... I've been to Madrid, Paris, London, Sydney, Negril, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, I've been all over the U.S...

My 2 fav places are Negril and Tel Aviv. Can't wait for next year. The baby will be old enough for me to go back to Jamaica.

Honestly, if I can get to Greece sometime soon, I will be a happy girl.

Morocco you should get a buddy for. Not sure about south america. China you should be OK unless you go on a pro democracy rampage. Ive mentioned couchsurfing quite a few times on here, but i will again-- if you need a travel buddy you should look into it. First off, unless you are going somewhere that is actually dangerous as a woman, you should not let being alone limit you. You will meet plenty of travelers along the way. Also, you should consider, that america is a much more violent country than many places you can travel to (east asia, australia, new zealand, and western europe specifically). I have not felt threatened by anything except for the traffic and moquitos here in South East Asia.

But if you are ging somewhere where you need a buddy, CS is a great way to meet other ppl who want to travel. My best friend who i am traveling with now i met off couchsurfing. And there is a good chance the person i wil travel india with via motorcycle will be a CS buddy; where else can you find people dumb enough to go to exotic places on motorcycles?

yea ive heard a lot of bad stuff about traveling solo as a female through the eastern parts of turkey. The middle east i hear is divided... ive heard negative things about traveling as a women through most of hte arabic type countries and morocco. But i have heard wonderful things about syria (which i really want to do) as well of Iran as all places (which i cannot travel independently on an american passport. but apparently the peiople in Iran are SUPER friendly. its just the government that sucks. i have had a lot of friends of both genders travel through their alone and their experience makes me really want to go .)

Obviously, being in te Mediterranean and lacking pollution from vehicles, it's gorgeous. And a very nice contrast to Athens, which is also worth visiting for other reasons, but it extremely dirty.
i think any sort of island with no motor vehicles is fucking awesome. i wish some us cities would ban cars. seriously... cars fuck up everything.

Scotland, England, Wales, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, India.
But I'm European so most of those are no real stretch.
India was amazing. I took an ex there for a month of backpacking around by bus and train. We had an incredible time.
Next I want to go to Vietnam and Cambodia, but my sister is embarking on a 6 month, around the world trip and finishing in San Francisco so I might fly over and meet her there since I've never been to the states.
My dream is to do the all American road trip from east to west, in a convertible.

Been to Ireland, London, all over the Caribbean, Mexico, and most of the US, including Hawaii but excluding Alaska. I would very much like to go all sorts of places in Europe--Scotland, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Greece, you name it. I would also very much like to go see Machu Picchu, then go down the mountains into the Amazon. Plus China and Japan...Russia...India...Morocco...Egypt...safari in Africa...even Antarctica I think would be fantastic. You'd be hard pressed to find a place outside of the US that I DON'T want to go to.

Mackinac Island in Michigan doesn't allow motor vehicles. Although I did see a fire engine up there once.

Of everywhere I have traveled I would most like to go back to Istanbul.

I backpacked through western Europe this summer... Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, lakes in Austria, Munich, London, Dublin, Galway. Also been to Vancouver and a few places in Mexico and a lot of the states.

I want to go everywhere. I can't really think of anywhere that I don't have an interest in visiting someday.

Athena, I'm curious about your experiences traveling in Asia. Are you staying in hostels/ hotels or with couch surfers? Do you have any other favorite cities or areas and what did you like about them? What mode of transportation are you using? Europe was amazing, especially as a lone traveller, but I'd really like to get to some less touristy areas and I think southeast asia might be the next big trip I go on

revivin this thread since it is summer time and i hope some of y'all are vacationing in some cool places. Especially since summer is slow season stripping wise in most of the US.

Im in Istanbul for the summer. I have a job here helping to manage scuba diving camping trips, so Im lucky because expenses are not coming out of pocket and i am getting scuba dives for free. At the end of my work i might take a hitchhiking trip to a neighboring country (with buddy, i dont want to hitchhike in turkey alone.)

so where yall at. i want to hear some cool shit.

I've traveled to Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia.

I LOVE Germany, it's so clean, tons of different cusine, and lots of fun things to do from discotechs, to beer festivals. Germany has it all

I really enjoyed traveling to Croatia, I stayed in a little village called Promienja, near Baska Voda and Makraska. Not only is the water crystal clear, the food is amazing...I mean I don't think I'll ever be able to recreate the amazing cusine (even though my mom is a Croat) haha.

The weather is beautiful everyday, the beach is gorgeous. Instead of sand it's like pebbles, and little rocks that are smooth. Pine trees adorn the beach instead of palm trees. Lot's of fun can be had at night at any of the discotechs.

Plus they have yet to join the EN, so they still use the Kuna as money as opposed to the Euro, so more bang for your buck. I would love to post pics of my trip out there, but they include family and I don't think they would be stoked on that.

BTW Croatia is beautiful on the coast, during the summer. Steer clear of inland if you are going on vacation because it's still a little wrecked from war. Also I nocited eastern european countries are not as clean as let's say Germany.

According to all the Japanese people I talk to on a somewhat daily basis, Japan is pretty normal now. The only difference is that there is not much A/C available because of the power plants' problems. Like everything is only slightly airconditioned. They don't keep it up on high, but on low. Travel isn't interrupted though, and everything is opened and fine to go visit.

I've traveled all around Tokyo now, including Harajuku, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi, Tokyo Bay, as well as the suburbs of Tokyo like Tachikawa, Ochanomizu, Hachioji, Ome, Jimbocho and quite a few others, and have been out to Nikko as well. Nikko is definitely worth a visit. It's beautiful.

I'm going to be taking August off from travel as it's too hot to truly enjoy sightseeing. But September through November I want to travel more of the main island here and see Kyoto (I've been told Kyoto is best in Spring and Fall), Hiroshima, the Japanese Alps for some hiking, etc.

PapillonLuvr- I'm glad to hear that things are pretty much normal over in Japan, i've been wanting to visit the country since I was in HS.

Did you go to the bath houses?

Do you have to use Subways to get everywhere?

I can't wait to plan a trip to Japan, if you don't mind I'll have a million questions to ask, when the time does approach

I haven't gone to any hot springs (onsens) or bath houses yet. Reason why is that so far all the ones I've heard about or found do NOT allow tattoos! Lame... So I am on the lookout for any that DO allow tats. Husband says to just "gaijin smash" our way into one, but I'd really rather not do that lol Many public areas such as pools, waterparks, bath houses, and hot springs don't allow tattoos.

You don't need the subway, but if you don't use the subways or trains you're going to be looking for parking forever or paying out the ass for it. The trains and subway systems are super convenient, but for a foreigner they can be a bit confusing to use at first. It took me about three trips to various downtown Tokyo spots to get really comfortable using them. The stations will get you pretty close to whereever you need to be, no more than 20 minutes walking after that AT MOST.

I hate driving here. Everything is backwards compared to the States, and the roads are sooooo ridiculously small. Like once you are off the main roads, they are the size of HALF a normal US road. It's actually kind of scary. :/
