I use the philosophy of 'if I havent used it in the past year....donate it or throw it.' If I didnt wear the clothes in the last appropriate season then they are gone. Books can go to the local library. Items like yoga blocks....personal decision but if haven't used for years....I would eliminate. Anything you get rid of such as planners ....be sure no personal information is buried in them such as bank statments...utility bills...or SS #.....you want to shred anything like that. Prescription pills should not be thrown out or down the drain. Contact local pharmacies as some of them freely accept expired medicine. I personally cannot be bothered with trying to sell stuff on line as the little I would get for it ...is not worth the effort.

yep....if haven't used them recently unless you can 'force' yourself to use them and save money by not buying new.

For me last year I went through a getting rid of stuff spree. I am packrat and had things I had no use for. The things that could be used I set out for a garage sale my parents were having and what wasn't sold I either gave to my library or the thrift store that benefits the Humane Society. Things that couldn't be reused I either threw out or shredded.
This gave me so much more space and less clutter.

^Toss them

donate them. i know some stores take old cell phones.

Actually, many non profits take old cell phones. The battered womans shelter not far from me is always looking for cell phones.
It's funny what can be donated. I had a huge stack of notebooks from college and even grad school. Since I will probably not go back to school (and have been out of grad school 7 years)they were just collecting dust. I ended up donating them to church and they use them for the CCD classes.

Just delete anything on them, and then pull any sim/memorycards in them. I know that Targets have recycling bins for cell phones and other eletronic components, like used ink cartridges, up by the service desk. I would imagine that Radio Shack or Best Buy would have something similar, but I'm not sure about it.

- Throw out the CD cases and buy as many CD/DVD organizers as you need.
- Go back through the old planners and transfer notes, numbers and dates to remember to your current planner. Toss out the old ones.
- Make up and toiletries - Whatever is old or almost gone toss it if you're not going to use it soon. Soon being this week.
- Take a photo of the stuff from Chile or only keep the most desirable and least ugly item. Donate or recycle if you can.
There are limited things you can do with stuff: keep/use, toss/recycle, donate/sell.
An example is the Yoga blocks. You can't really sell them but you might run into someone that needs them. Just give them away. If they want to offer you cash maybe take it.
$5 will buy you lunch, a coffee treat, gas, a book or magazine.
Give the old cell phones to your local women's shelter. I worked at one for years and they were invaluable to hand out to our clients. It could be what saves someone's life when they have no other way to call 911.
I hear ya on the packrat thing... I have such a hard time throwing away anything. I think if I didn't stop myself, I could easily start getting into hoarder territory. The thought of throwing something out that you might one day need, 50 years down the line... argh I hate it lol!
When you find that person, please send them to my house with the chloroform bottle for some more head. When you're done though, I'm in no rush.
I propose a toast - to my self control.... I see you crawling, helpless, on the floor.......

You can return unopened makeup to the store that you bought it from usually. Nobody but Sephora will take opened containers back though so for the opened things, ask your friends if they'd like them.
Music or computer game CDs you can sell online to Newtownvideo.com I'd suggest only selling the things that net you more than 50 cents apiece because they'll deduct 50 cents from your account for every CD that's damaged and you don't want to end up owing them money.
You can also sell music CDs to a local music store I bed. Just google it.
Old planners (pages removed) can be donated to Goodwill or local thrift stores. Goodwil does the "women to work" program that helps underprivileged women get prepared for professional jobs and they're always looking for stuff like that.
Medicines, you can take the labels off and throw them out or you can flush them. They actually recommend that you flush them.Or you could sell them if they're anything good. I'd go through friends, as opposed to Craigslist or something. You can recycle the bottles in most places.

Ok, throwing my .2 here..I have sold off basically most everything online..I take clothes I don't want/won't sell to a local charity (actually not so local, but they take stuff other charities refuse). Where I am, they have a program to donate old cell phones, they are given to senior citizens, the phones can only diall 911 so if they have an emergency..I believe I drop them @ courthouse or senior center.
I too have a pile of stuff, despite more than a few charity runs. I, personally believe in recycling & was brought up that way, I have several non-working heaters, (thanks to online & store shysters). I am going to lookup/try to find a recylcing place.
CD cases, maybe you could ask a used CD seller (if any are still around) if they'd want them?

I need to throw out my shit too. What I would do is rent a big truck (I have massive amounts of THINGS!) and load it up with all that junk - and send it to the dumpster. Your life will be much better/smoother without all that useless clutter.

freecycle.org for stuff too crappy to sell, too good to dump that salvation army doesnt want lol

i have the opposite problem. i want to throw everything out. i HATE clutter.
maybe u can do what i do with my boyfriend...when i see he is not using something i throw it in a rubbermaid container that we keep in the closet...every month at the end of the month i empty the container in the dumpster ( if theres anything useful i'll see if anyone i know wants it or will give it to goodwill--but its usually just useless shit)...but if he is looking for something i "threw out" within a month it gets rescued from the container..if not its going in the trash.
also i helped my mom with moving recently and she wanted to keep sooo much stuff that i told her she didn't need. i made a deal with her to keep all the stuff i thought she didn't need in my garage till the end of the year and if she needs anything from the boxes i will dig it out for her. she already told me she has no idea what is in those boxes and i can get rid of them.
i think the big problem most people feel like when they get rid of stuff they "might" need it. usually you don't...i guess my advice is to lock it all away somewhere for awhile...see if you miss it...and then when you realize you don't throw it all out..or have someone do it for you so you don't think about keeping it again.
