Default Texas abolishes last meal request

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15034970

Brewer, the guy who was recently executed who was all over the news, didnt eat his requested last meal consisting of "It included two chicken fried steaks, a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, three fajitas, a meat lover's pizza, a pint of ice cream and peanut butter fudge." Now a texas senator has decided that "enough is enough" and texas will now be serving hte same meal that every other inmate eats.

**disclaimer: dont want this to turn into a political argument over the death penalty. especially since politics are a no-go.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Wow, look at that meal....doesn't he know that eating that kind of food will lead to heart disease and diabetes?

It almost makes you want to commit a crime to be executed. Seriously though I have mixed feelings on this and the death penalty. While I do think they should be able to choose their last meal, on the other hand I also look at other aspects. I suppose you could say this gives them something to look forward to before something I'm sure most aren't looking forward to.

I won't say more because I don't want this to turn into a pro death penalty/anti death penalty thread.

So what exactly is the point of denying them their last meal, except to be unnecessarily cruel? "Well if he wanted to eat pizza and ice cream, he shouldn't have killed that dude hurrr" Well duh, that's why he's being executed.

Sounds expensive to provide something of such extravagance to a person due to be executed. I can see why they'd get rid of it in that case.

before they're carted off to be murdered by their own government.*
^^^ nonetheless, a personal opinion that is highly political !!! I kept quiet regarding this topic as long as the discussion was limited to factual discussion. It's one thing to strictly deal with factual information. However, it's another thing to interject a non-factually related, politically 'liberal' statement to the effect that ... in so many words ... states which impose the death penalty are committing 'murder'.

*not, I repeat, NOT trying to start a debate! Just personal opinion
Undoubtedly professional 'liberal' political advocates would like nothing better than to see such a highly politically polarized assertion left to stand unchallenged, with the subsequent posting of counterbalancing 'conservative' statements not being allowed due to the supposed ban on politics in the Lounge.

Sounds expensive to provide something of such extravagance to a person due to be executed
it is undoubtedly far more expensive for a state to keep a convicted murderer incarcerated / fed / medically cared for over the course of the next 30+ years of their life than for a state to provide one extravagant / wasted 'last meal' but then cut the state's future prisoner related expenses to zero. This is just a simple statement of economic facts !

But if, as above, I were to take another step and assert the personal opinion that states which do not impose the death penalty are 'wasting' huge amounts of state taxpayer money 'coddling' criminals, essentially equivalent to the 'death penalty = murder' comment in terms of political content but from the other end of the political / politically correct spectrum, I would clearly risk retribution for violating the ban on political discussion in the Lounge. Again please understand that I'm just trying to raise the point that bans on political content should be equally applied regardless of whether the nature of the political content is 'liberal' or 'conservative', and regardless of whether the nature of the political content is 'politically correct' or 'politically incorrect'.

Also, please understand that no personal affront was / is intended.

Legally speaking, the action by the state of Texas was intended to send a message that the 'last meal' was a privelege and not a right ... and when priveleges are abused they can be taken away. IMHO that was the sum total of pertinent analysis of this particular topic.

You're absolutely right Melonie, I shouldn't have made that statement. I can go back and delete it. I was definitely trying to interject my own political beliefs into the thread and I apologize.

Back on topic, from what I understand most prisons have rules about the last meal. As in, it can't be more than $X, must be available within an hour's drive, etc. Why can't Texas have sensible rules like this instead of abolishing the whole thing just because of one inmate?

That's like having a cabinet full of cookies but no rules to govern the eating of them. So one day your kid goes crazy and eats a whole box before dinner, but instead of simply making a "no cookies before dinner" rule, you decide to ban cookies forever.

^^^ thank you ... and no reason to apologize either ! Again, no personal affront was intended. And IMHO there is no reason to delete it either, as it may serve as a future example of how 'easy' it is for political content based on strongly felt personal opinion to seep into otherwise non-political topics ... and particularly so when said political content is well accepted by a number of Lounge readers ( judging by the thanks that your 'death penalty = murder' comment has received ) !

As someone who has had a bit of ( very expensive and totally bogus ) experience with Texas LE, their idea of 'sensible' where criminal activities are concerned is ... shall we say ... FAR from mainstream ! Nonetheless, they are a sovereign state and have the right to offer or not offer priveleges as they see fit.

Why provide any privileges to a brutal murderer. (Note also the individual did not eat any of the meal.) It would make more sense of offer a reward to a prisoner who makes significant progress toward rehabilitation, even if that reward were largely symbolic.

While they are at it why don't they quit letting them have last visits, family members as witnesses, last phone calls and heck why don't they deny them the right to know their execution date?

    That was very expensive.

But perhaps what's more expensive is his legal counsel, court costs, and appeals process plus the cost of all the media attention this scum bag did not deserve. I am more outraged at that then I am the $30 or so they spent on food he did not eat before they killed him.

Any thinking person realizes that no system is perfect, therefore capital punishment will inevitably result in the execution of some innocent people.

Keep that in mind when considering this issue....

Yep. I'm in Illinois and there have been many people who were released from death row because evidence proved them innocent. The first person exonerated through DNA was a relative of a childhood friend and while his case was not murder (it was rape)he spent years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

I think they should get any food the prisoner requests........bring it into a room where he is.....

and then make him watch while his victim's family eats it......

I wouldn't have eaten that shit either! Not out of spite but simply because I would have been waaaaay too nervous to eat. You're about to die for goodness sake! I would have been so nervous that if I did eat that meal I would have shit it out and threw it up all at the same time.

He probably thought he wanted it and then after he got it realized that it was gonna give him the BG's (bubble guts/diarrhea in case someone didn't know)

Whether or not such requests should be allowed is a whole different story which I have yet to form an opinion on.

Yeah I don't know about that either. Its like you are taunting the inmate before they die by offering them a choice in what they eat.

I think they should get a 9mm bullet to the back of the head while kneeling over a drain, then cremation. Maybe sprinkled as fertilizer on the prison garden afterward.

In a perfect world I guess.
