Default Mac or Sephora make up help?

Im planning on going to either Mac or Sephora to get the right product for my face (primer, cover up) thats all I think I need since my face gets oily through the day and I want them to show me how to apply it properly.

My question is, which place to go?
And lastly, do they try to sell the products that are "hot" or the ones the store is trying to sell?

Also, do they get comission on selling their products? I hate asking for help when they put effort into such things,

I would go to Sephora because you have a plethora of options. MAC is not the say all/end all of cosmetics.

They have too many limited edition products, so once you find something you like, its discontinued. At least with sepora they have a point system when you are a frequent shopper there and always give free samples. When's the last time you recieved a free sample of anything from MAC.
Ain't nothing more important than the mula!!

I've never had good help at Sephora. I'd go to Macy's or Nordstrom and try Lancome or Estee Lauder. Hopefully someone here can recommend something awesome for you. I think a recommendation would be better than going in blindly. AND, at a department store hopefully you'll catch the gift with purchase!

MAC has the best makeup artists and people to train you. Sephora has the best products. So go to MAC and consult with someone, learn how to apply, then go to Sephora and buy the best product.

neither of these stores work on commission. both have good return policies. you'll be fine regardless.

I personally do not like Macs face products, i prefer sephora over mac. Smashbox has a great primer my foundation stays in place forever. You can learn how to apply all these products( primer, foundation, concealer, loose power, ect) all online with handy dandy youtube. I'd go to sephora since they carry way more lines of makeup.

Sephora.... Sephora has tons of options, lots of brands, and a great loyalty program that offers samples, gifts, etc.. They are really good about letting you return stuff (90 days!!!)
I like Make Up For Ever, they have a great range of products... it's definitely my favorite brand for face stuff. The HD Microfinish Powder is DA-BOMB!

MAC is good, but I've yet to be impressed by anything aside from their eyeshadows. My clubs makeup artists used MAC stuff and to be honest, nothing really lived up to the hype... or the price tag.... especially when it came to foundation/powder/face-stuff. Their primers felt sticky to me.

Meh... I live near a giant Sephora, which happens to be a couple of blocks away from the MAC flagship store. I find the MAC staff to be kinda douchey at times. God forbid I ask wtf NW35 means. NW35, NC17, CX98 not the most user friendly system when it comes to finding a shade.

That being said, the MAC folk just LOVE to tell me how wrong I am--- all the time. If I say this shade is too yellow/cool/rosy/anything they feel the need to inform me that according to the MAC Gods this is the shade preordained for me because it will neutralize my skin somehow. I don't wanna neutralize anything! I wanna find a color that matches my skin!

I second going to Sephora! They have a good variety of products there and I've had the best experiences by going there rather than MAC.

Although MAC seems to have the most highly skilled makeup artists, you really don't need to learn any special techniques that they would teach you anyway. Applying primer, concealer, foundation etc. are all pretty much self explanatory (and there's always youtube tutorials!)

I recommend picking up a "Beauty Blender" from Sephora too (someone there should be able to explain you how to use it but basically it's a sponge that you dampen with water and use "bouncing" motions on your face to apply foundation evenly and naturally). It takes all the hard work of blending out away.

I am not a fan of MAC face products. I used their Studio Fix foundation after hearing rave reviews about it but it felt way too cake-y and thick on me and it broke my skin out, TERRIBLY. So I'm hesitant to use any other face products of theirs...

Thanks all... I bought the smashbox (green) primer long ago.. It made my face more greasy. Im worried to try any of their other primers for this reason, but know they have great feedback. This is why I need help - my face oils everything I put on hah. Im probably going to Sephora since they have more choices.

    ^^

The green primer is meant to cancel out red pigment in your skin. But since your skin is oily i suggest getting Make Up Forever Hd translucent face powder, it absorbs the moisture in your skin and leaves you looking flawless.

Mac is pretty good. I use their concealer and powder, also their Wonder Woman blush.

    I use Sephora's Lancome mascara.

I had representatives help me at both stores. They weren't very pushy at Sephora. At the MAC counter in Macys the guy did my make up for me and I was sold. I spent $200 total on a bunch of stuff, including brushes, and I still haven't had to replace it (minus the mascara) and I bought it February 2011. I use it about 3 times a week.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

My face has some redness thats why I bought it, Im worried to buy the regular primer if my face gets oily. Im only looking for a primer and cover up. I usually put cream, consealor, cover up then loose power to make my face less oily but it still doesnt work as well through the day.

ahhh ok i thought you bought the green primer for oily skin, well it sounded that way. Well whichever foundation your using also affects the way it sits on your face sometimes certain foundations will make your face oil. There is a primer by smashbox called Light, it's water based so it doesn't make your skin oily(well not supposed to anyways). Bobbi Brown also has an Oil Control lotion that is supposed to work really well.

I would go to sephora or ulta if our could ulta is like sephora but better to me they have urban decay, smash box etc
I like Mac I like their liquid concealers, studio fix powder , fix + & lipstick mainly but their foundation breaks me out! To me Mac isn’t all that I’ve found better stuff in drug stores that worked for me
With Mac maybe it’s a NY thing but some of these Mac artist well at least in NYC (again some not all)
Have the worst attitudes and are so rushy rushy and I don’t like to be rushed!

Also YOUTUBE IS THE ONE OF THE BEST WAY TO LEARN THESE THINGS
As far how how to apply primer foundation, how to fill in your eyebrows etc
