    Dizzy tanning salon etiquette

My club's dressing room has a tanning bed, so I only visit my local tanning salon once a week or so. I just do UV sessions there, no fancy treatments. Today I noticed an apparently new small sign saying "tips are very appreciated" or something like that. I've never thought to tip the cashier at the tanning salon, and there is no tip jar. Today the woman who owns the franchise was working the register, and instead of initiating an awkward conversation, I just pretended not to notice the sign. What would y'all have done in this situation? Is it really customary to tip the cashier when I buy an $11 UV session?

I wouldn't tip her. I would have asked her about it, who's idea it was and how they rationalized that someone who sits on their ass doing nothing until someone comes in and completes a 30 second transaction totaling $11 dollars deserves a tip.

I would think the sign was more for people who purchase custom spray tan sessions.

I don't think working at a tanning salon is part of the service industry -so no, I don't think they deserve a tip.

I don't think people should ask for tips, unless its a service industry job, where you usually get paid 3 dollars an hour because its customary to be tipped. They make a wage and get a paycheck and I don't they claim those tips.

Dancers don't get paychecks and we bust our asses on stage doing hard physical shit that could potentially cause injuries and sure as hell makes us sore. And sometimes WE don't get tipped. And they think because they press a couple buttons and tell you to have a nice day they deserve a tip? No... Just no.

It's entirely possible that in actuality, the person is not SUPPOSED to be getting tipped, but maybe put up the sign herself. I've seen places where the associates would put out a tip jar independently of the management, and would hide it whenever a manager or owner would come in. I agree with anyone else--I would tip for a custom spray tan, but I'm not going to tip a receptionist when all I'm doing is laying in a tanning bed. Maybe they are implying they should get tipped for cleaning the beds? Which is also bullshit.

A lot of people ASSUME that if there's a tip jar there or a line for tipping on a receipt that you're supposed to tip people... and people know/use this as a chance to make money for nothing.

It's just RIDICULOUS now... people try to get tipped for everything... and it's gotten to the point where tips are expected regardless of quality of work.

There's no reason to tip a cashier at a tanning place to go lay in a bed for 15 minutes.

I went out for drinks with my brother once. I picked up the tab (he'd just gotten back from Afghanistan so I treated him to liquor lol), and add a nice tip. When I looked at the receipt later I realized they already charged a 10% gratuity off of a few drinks. I was pissed!

I meant that there wasn't a tip jar, and never has been, which made the new sign all the more confusing. This is the only tanning salon I've ever been to, so the new sign made me think that maybe I'd misunderstood what was expected of me as a customer.

Well I think tipping in general is good karma but in this case it is probably not necessary. They seem to be greedy to ask for a tip.
