Default Fiber bulking for weight loss

I am always looking for ways to curb my appetite. Recently when I went to the Vitamin Shoppe to stock up on more green powder I talked to the manager about appetite suppressing supplements. He is a body builder and I figured who better to ask than someone who works out so dilligently AND manages a supplement store. What he told me surprised me, and I thought I knew it all (okay, a lot).

He told me rather than taking more supplements, add fiber to your diet with psyillium whole husks. In your stomache with water they "grow" to twice their size, so you feel full. This is a good way to eat less when taken 1/2 hour before meals. Fiber not only fills your stomache space but it triggers your brain that you are not that hungry any more.

I take Oxyelite Pro which is great, but adding fiber was a healthy way to further keep my appetite in check. Plus it scrubs your colon so any accumulated waste (which makes your tummy puff out) gets removed. Psyllium husks are cheap and gluten free too.

You have to watch out though because if you're not careful it can cause constipation.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that fiber needs to be accompanied by a lot of water. A lot. You need it to become properly filled with water to push it through your colon. Lack of water will make it a hard mass that doesn't move and sits in your intestines like a rock.

Mix a teaspoon in a glass of water/juice. Follow with two more glasses of water. See why you won't be hungry?

tessarubyxoxo- I'm 1/2 way through my first bottle of Oxy Elite Pro and really like it. Currently I take 1 in the morning and 1 about noon, which does really well to curb appetite and give me lots of energy at the gym for my runs. I do bikram yoga one day, long distance running the next (repeat) and combined with a pretty clean diet and no grains my body is really where I want it to be.

OEP is expensive $54 at Vitamin Shoppe, but it will last a month and a half at two pills per day. It's a thermogenic meaning you will sweat more, an appetite reducer, and the best part is there is no crash. This is amazing - I have taken lots of pills but only this one and Dren gave me no crash. I do get shaky hands if I take the two pils close to one another in the day, but I don't feel like freaking out with anxiety and my sleep is not usually compromised at night. Keep in mind though, my tolerance is pretty high so you may take two and be ready to clean your apartment all night.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Does the psyllium really work well as a flush? I was sick recently, so I want to try something that isn't as harsh as a diuretic.

If you don't want something as harsh as a diuretic. start supplementing with a few pills each night of magnesium. You can also add blackstrap molasses to shakes (has magnesium and a bunch of really healthy stuff that helps your PMS and bowels.)

You can also do Vitamin C flushes or epsom salt flushes (basically magnesium) but these are things only to do once to flush out your colon and then reset your digestive health with probiotics (not just yogurt but a good refrigerated pill.) Also look to your water-- are you drinking tap water, distilled, or spring? Try drinking spring or mineral. Tap just isn't good for you unless you're in a place that doesn't have flouride added (does any place have that but well water places?) and distilled leaches minerals out of your body over time which makes it way harder to poop.

My colon health is surprisingly good compared to all the other crap I have going on. It's just like any other system of pipes though- you get build up on the walls over time. I figure a simple water flush won't do much except make me go, whereas a diuretic (even if it would be effective in the way I'm hoping for) could upset my digestive tract and undo a lot of the progress I've made getting healthy again. Psyllium seems like a good idea for that little internal scrub I want, I was just curious if anyone observed a considerable benefit/difference.

As for water, I drink filtered. I like spring and mineral water, but it's more of a guilty treat for me once in a while. After all, there's no clear regulations on bottled water, coupled with my own moral issues about the environment. Tap in my area is does have fluoride added, which validated my prissy hate for the taste and got everyone off my back about not drinking it.

Naida, aside from helping to control appetite (to a healthy level - not to the point you are skimping on necessary calories), adding fiber should be noticeable after about two weeks through an increase of energy once the colon becomes cleaner. You asked if there would be a considerable difference and I say yes and no. Yes - in the long term. No- because it's hard to measure small amount of change, even if they ultimately add up to a big change over the long run.

It's important to remember that most healthy life changes are not drastic, whether it's adding more exercise, eating a cleaner diet, working a little more each week, etc. It's what keep them permanent so we don't burn out. Adding fiber won't work like a stimulant laxative but it's not hard on your body either, and it's good for your heart in the long run. The expectations with fiber should be about the same with vitamins - it's not overnight, but it is ultimately helpful, and never a bad idea.

Thanks, piper. Perhaps "considerable" was the wrong word to use. I understand that changes like these are cumulative over a period of time, I just meant noticeable in the usual time frame for this in particular.

As a non-believer in appetite control, I suppose something like this would fit into my diet duringan already light eating period. Maybe mixed in to V8 at snack time, when I try to have V8 juice and a fruit with a glass of water?

For sure, that's a good idea. The thing about fiber is it works relatively fast in that you see the results (bowel movement) within 24 hours. That's pretty satisfying.

I was shocked that some people think it's normal (girls at my club) to have a bm every couple days or every other day. I can only wonder if they take opiates of any kind or something that will constipate them because it's NOT normal. If someone does take pills or is on a high protien diet then fiber bulking would almost be a must to avoid constipation.

Like a lot of other health related stuff, how often a BM occurs will vary for the individual- but going more than 48 hours without one is not good when you should be having one (two is preferable) in 24.

I will never understand why people are so shy or uninformed when it comes to colon health. After all, the littlest difference in its function can leave you feeling amazing or terrible for days.

Psyllium totally jacks up my gut... it makes me ridiculously bloated and gassy :/ I envy that it works for you though!!

This is the same concept that is behind "full bars." For me, appetite is usually psychological, rather than physical. In fact, whenever I am really watching my diet and leaning down, and I feel hunger pangs, there is a twisted part of me that enjoys it. It's what helps me get into the diet mindset.

    But again, I'm weird.

This is kinda off topic, but could I ask you girls what the appeal of appetite suppression is? As I mentioned before, I don't believe in it and the only person I know IRL who does it is my mother who is notorious for being non-committed to weight loss.

Doesn't it slow your metabolism overall and/or result in possible nutrient deficiencies?

For me, when I say appetite suppression, I generally want it to curb my appetite to facilitate cutting calories. Cutting calories makes me naturally hungry - adding an appetite suppressant curbs the hunger so it isn't at the forefront of my mind. I am also newly cutting sugar so the cravings can be kind of hard to get through considering it has been an addiction for me. An appetite suppressant can help, in addition to taking herbs that also make the body not want sugar.

I've read that if you have flax seed oiil or extra virgin olive oil, it helps curb your hunger because once you absorb it (half an hour later) it triggers the body's satiety switch...so you feel full.

I've found that just cutting my calories would make me go crazy...plus i'd feel week, couldn't concentrate, mentally wasn't as sharp...so instead of for example cutting to 1400 calories a day, i just take 1800 calories a day but make sure to workout each day (no more than an hour..and alternate the workouts so the body keeps getting challenged..like yoga one day, pilates the next, weights the next, cardio the next...bootcamp the next). Plus I always worried i'd get into a nutrient deficit if cutting so many calories, even though i was taking lots of vitamins.
Freshly chopped up flax seeds (grind in coffee grinder) mixed into a glass of water can be good for fiber, plus you have the anti-cancer aspects. if you just eat the dry powder on your tongue, i can see getting major cramps and problems with it going down...can be dangerous for your system.

When I first started using the my Fitness Pal app (love it), it said that to go from 126 to 122 I should eat 1200. Yeah right, that is WAY to little for me, even if I am trying to lose weight. I'd start eating couch cushions or just have zero energy. I'm like you Junigirl - better to have higher calories and be able to function than be a bean pole who cant do simple math because I'm starving my brain just to be skinny.

Lol at the eating couch cushions..but it's true. Is the sudden fat loss worth it if you're otherwise going nuts? Makes more sense to do it gradually. Plus, if do a sudden severe calorie restriction, your body indeed goes into "starvation"mode where it conserves energy..metabolism slows down, and so things that you used to eat with no problem will now make you gain fat. The starvation "cave man"mode is not a myth. It is backed up by science as faras I know (too tired to do the internet search now for links). Plus, your hair might start falling out. Better to do a moderate calorie restriction. Or, keep your calories the same, but choose healthier options, take your vitamins, and work off the cals by exercise daily.make sure to keep tally of the cals though...it's easy to lose track if you don't actually write it down and add it up.
For appetite suppression, I also found that working out in the evening before i'dgo to sleep (this would be on days you are not working..) would kill my appetite and any cravings.something about workingout makes me feel not hungry for several hours after. Now, keep in mind this only would happen if I were eating properly to begin with, no starvation diet, just eating in moderation and withinmy daily calorie limits (for me around 1900).if I were not eating healthy, then the workout actually would just make me hungry. Does that make sense? Whereas if I worked out in morning or mid day, I'd get pretty hungry later in the day, and sometimes would give in to the craving, ruining the day's possible diet progress.

Ha ha, this is how I first lost weight (psyllium husks) and in a pinch if my stomach was complaining (like at night) I would take a sugar free antacid or two. Another good thing is if you are hungry before bed do miso soup with wakame seaweed in it and I like to add some chili paste. Wakame is supposed to help you stay thin or loose weight and a little chili paste will quicken your metabolism. You can buy a tub of miso at Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods, etc.. I prefer the white and the red, not so much the yellow.

I switched to eating fish and vegetables and I have been slimming down. The skin on my belly seemed kinda thick and was getting that cottage cheese texture to it O_O .. But my stomach skin is getting thinner (without even trying) I just make a disposable tray outta tin foil and put it in the oven, pre-heat to 400 and then put in some veggies (frozen) and a frozen fish fillet. After the fish begins to thaw I douse it with salt and pepper. I have been eating okra, brussle sprouts, green beans... If you are going to do a potato or squash you will want to start it sooner but for the fish and frozen veggies I just allow 20 minutes. So simple, so healthy and like I said, this simple change to my diet has me slimming down.

I take pysillium husks as well. I recently learned my lesson for not drinking enough water after taking them. That day and the next day, I had a big bloated tummy and bad gas. Now, I drink more spring water which keeps this from happening again.
