    Default New antidepressant : Viibryd

Ok, my new shrink has prescribed me a new (pretty sure it was only put on the market in June) antidepressant called Viibryd. After I told him I did not want to take an antidepressant, because I don't want to have to take something every day so I can tell if I'm having a great day by myself & don't need it. I don't want to be zombified or any other stupid side effects. He told me this was a new kind that may give me energy.
It also has no generic, so I'm sure it's gonna be pricey.
The Doc had run out of samples but happened to have a coupon for a free 30 day supply.
I'm very suspicious that this has more to do with selling this drug than treating me. I haven't filled the script yet.
Anyone know anything about this drug? I've googled and found precious little info, I guess 'cause it's so new.
    Any thoughts/experiences would be appreciated!

I don't know anything about this drug, but I have depression and was also resistant to taking medication for YEARS until a really great counselor that I saw briefly changed my mind.

First, you have to take antidepressants daily because the drugs need to time to build up in your system in order to work. This is why it takes a few weeks in order to feel the full benefits of the drug.

You may be right about the money aspect. I would also be wary since it is so new.
If you are concerned about the expensive prescription and/or might not be able to fill it after the sample is over I would say don't even bother. 30 days might be enough time to feel the full benefits, but only right before you get all the negetive side effects of stopping it so abruptly (antidepressants should be tapered off, not quit cold turkey). Not only can it take a while to feel the benefits, but sometimes the side effects take some time to go away. Really 30 days just isn't worth it if you can't/don't want to continue afterwards, especially since you might not have a real feel for even the drug is even working for you at that point.

I take Wellbutrin, and I LOVE it. It is very "energizing" and does not usually have that zombie-fying effect. It also has a low incidence of sexual side effects (the biggest downsides to antidepressants imo) and has actually been reported to increase sexual satisfaction. It also is available as a very affordable generic (Bupropion), which is actually how I take it.

When it comes to antidepressants, it really comes down to trial and error. Before Wellbutrin I took Paxil, and it made me unbelievably nauseous (could barely leave me house) as well as very apathetic and unmotivated (plus I couldn't come, which was awful). I quit taking it, and when I went back to my doctor we decided to give Wellbutrin a try. It has really made a huge difference. Yes, I have to take it every day, but I have pretty much zero side effects except for not being depressed.

What I'm trying to say is don't give up if you have a bad experience with a drug, and don't think that taking antidepressants means you have to feel like a zombie or deal with really unpleasant side effects. You may have some, but you just have to decide if the benefits outweigh the negatives. They may and they may not, but if you are struggling with depression I believe it is at least worth a shot to try and find a medication that helps.

    Good luck!

I went through a few different anti-depressants trying to find the right one, and finally I thought I'd succeeded with Cymbalta. It worked really well, but then I started getting sick, and my doctor discovered that it was giving me fucking SEIZURES in my brain! I think the fact that it was so new meant that this side effect hadn't been exposed a lot yet, and it still hasn't to an extent.

I'd be wary of the fact that it's so new, but you're doing the right thing by doing your research and everything. I would definitely find out how much you're going to be paying for it normally, because it can take 3-4 weeks to even really feel the benefits of an anti-depressant and you don't want to find out if works, and then that you can't effort it. My Cymbalta was $300+ a month, thank god for insurance.

1st, a belated 'thank you' to those who responded. Sorry, I'm kinda bad at that.

2nd, I felt I should post an update in case anyone else looks for info about this.

I finally filled the prescription. Mostly because I had a coupon for a $25 gift card from CVS for filling a new prescription and the prescription itself was going to be free anyhow.
    Not really the point though.

So I had the night off and decided to give it a shot. I followed the instructions, take a half dose with a very large meal. For about 2-3 hrs, I felt a bit 'zen', like I'd taken a xanax. Unfocused. I would have been worthless at work. When my doc prescribed it, after I told him I didn't want antidepressants because I'd given most of them a shot in the past and I didn't like the sedated effect, after I told him I was currently having a problem with lethargy, he argued my points by saying this would 'energize' me. Total bullshit. I didn't want to do a damn thing, even writing.
Also, I spoke to the pharmacists when I filled it, and they told me that the drug reps had been coming around and pushing it pretty hard. My doc was pretty adamant about prescribing it to me as well. I don't like that.
After a few hrs, I was extremely glad I was not at work. All I will say is that there was extreme 'gastrointestinal distress'.
When I went to bed, I had hardcore restless leg syndrome and apparently a sleepwalking episode, which has NEVER happened. I woke up on the couch, with the book I'm currently reading that's usually on my nightstand, next to me. So, apparently I got up in my sleep, grabbed my book, and headed for the sofa with the intention of doing a little reading. No recollection of this whatsoever. Kinda scary, what if I have decided to go for a walk outside?

I know that you really need to take antidepressants for about 2 wks for the bad side effects to fade and the benefits to kick in, but no fucking thanks! I wasn't into the idea of antidepressants in the first place, and the reasons why I'm depressed right now are temporary and I have perfectly good reasons for.
So, I'm not too sure screwing around with my chemistry is the best idea. I'm getting a different doc, because I think this one is a whore for the drug reps and lost my trust.
ALSO: anyone reading this, please remember that I'm not a doc, this is just my personal experience, and everyone's body is different. Someone else may have a fine experience and this drug may benefit them a great bit! Just not me!

Good luck with your journey to finding the right anti-depressant for you. I took a bunch of anti-depressants like Lexatan,Lexapro and Xanax before settling with Paxil. It isnt perfect but it's better than the others. I still get nausea and other side effects. But it is not as bad as it was in the beginning.

You have to find a doctor willing to work with you to find the right combination for you.

    Again Good Luck!!!

I once was diagnosed with mild to moderate depression when I was going through hell with the father of my kids. (cheated, abusive, ect) So when I got the prescription I filled it, I took only one, and I felt very weird and I guess how you would describe as zen or out of it, and I threw the rest of the bottle out. Personally for something like depression I would rather see a therapist and just get counseling. The only pills I take right now are birth control, and iron. That's about it.

Just my opinion though, and I am not depressed, and when I feel depressed I talk myself out of it eventually.

What an ass to push that medicine on you just because he probably got or will get kickbacks from the pharma reps. Thankfully you saw through it and was on alert. I went through Lexapro, Paxil, Celexa, and something else before finding some help with Effexor.

Crazymeds.com forums are a godsend when it comes to these medicines. People are pretty candid with their experiences on psych drugs if anyone ever needs more real world info on side effects and such.
