Default What kind of car should I buy?

I'm in the market for a vehicle, but I hate cars and I don't know anything about them. I'm also a terrible driver. Well, not terrible, but... definitely not great.

To be honest, most cars look the same to me and I usually can't identify one type of car from another unless I know someone who drives it and therefore see it often or someone coaches me on a specific visual aspect unique to that type of vehicle.

Sooooo... I would prefer something that is:

-a CAR.. not a truck, suv, minivan, weird-shaped thing, scooter, etc etc
    -cool
    -domestic
    -4 dr
    -1-5 years old
    -safe, reliable, blahblahblah

None of these things are set in stone, just preferences.. (aside from safe, reliable, and blahblahblah lol) I'm not gonna lie, I really just want something cool. I'm leaning towards a Charger, but I feel like it's a boy car. (I know that shouldn't stop me, but w/e)

    Any suggestions??

I know others may think I'm crazy but I love my Focus. Gets great gas mileage and to me looks cool. Plus cheap for what I got.

if you're not living in a region where snow and ice are major considerations, perhaps a new Ford Mustang ! Not as 'testosterone soaked' as the Dodge Charger, but it will definitely garner attention.

Chargers are nice, but the Challenger is way sexier. One of my friends had one and she loved it. She also looked hot as hell driving it... Until she totaled it. I don't know about the gas mileage or anything though. And it's only a two-door.

The new Mustangs are a good option too, like Melonie said. Plus, they have WAY better gas mileage than the older models. Depending on how old you are though, insurance might be high. And it's also a two-door, though if they have interiors like the past models, the backseat is roomy enough. Again though, if it's an issue, two-doors are usually more expensive to insure.

Mazda offers free lifetime oil changes (not sure if it's only with new purchases) and has a variety of cars. I like the Rx8, but it only gets like 17-21 miles per gallon. It doesn't have the best handling either, but some people don't mind trading "safety" for sexy. The 3's are popular and really easy to drive, and they have four doors. I imagine insurance would be low too.

I knew someone who bought a BMW that was frequently used for test drives at a lot. They discounted it a lot and it was a great car. Might want to look into something like that.

I'm fighting the urge to buy a used vette this summer... And I'm not very good at fighting urges. Fast cars and makeup are my financial vices.

You can't go wrong with a Honda; Mazda makes a great car too.

Strangely, the best running car I've ever owned was a 1982 308 GTSi. Tad expensive to maintain though.

not wanting to get off the track, but these days the term 'domestic' really doesn't mean a whole lot ... since virtually every 'mainstream' brand of auto uses sub-assemblies imported from China / Korea / Eastern Europe etc. And many brands from foreign headquartered automakers are actually assembled in the USA as well ... including some 'sporty' models from BMW, Subaru, Toyota etc. that might fit with the OP's stated desires.

However, in terms of perceived 'domestic' vehicles, and vehicles whose appearance and performance is capable of making an immediate 'statement', I'll stick with the new Mustang !

I love my Hyundai Elantra. it's a great car, runs great, never gives me any problems. Since I bought it new I got free oil changes, free basic maintenance and free tires for life.

The best car buying tip I have is to a) talk any family you have who was/is in the military into signing up for a USAA bank account. Or if you were military, you sign up. They have a car buying service. That saved me 5K! I'm not even bullshitting.

Or if that doesn't work, go read all the advice on car buying on consumerist.com
