    Default cant sleep..body's a wreck

I'm on the third shift sleep schedule, but my husband and daughter aren't. My house is like a damn auditorium, so I hear eeeverrryythiiing that goes on..plus my toddler pops into my room about every hour and there's no lock on my door.

Basically, on my days off, I'm a zombie...when I'm awake, I feel like death. As a result of waking up repeatedly, I sleep in until 5 or 6 in the evening...like, an hour or two before my daughter goes to bed or I go to work. Sucks.

    Any tips from fellow insomniacs?

Ps..ear plugs are a no go because I want to hear it if something bad happens

The whole problem is I'm sleeping in too late though...I need to get a solid 8 hours and then get up at a decent hour to function. Plus my momma's hooked on xanax, so its not something I'm comfortable with. :/

I used to be that bad...I would sleep for a max of 3 hours but usually only 1.5. Now, I at least manage 8, but its spread out over the coarse of the day, which is equally bad. It takes 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep to complete the sleep cycle, and you need to repeat it twice for maximum efficiency...although there's a bit of debate. Some doctors say only 6 or 7 is necessary. But regardless, frequent naps are not the same as a block of sleep.

Oh, and when you think you're better off staying awake rather than sleeping 2 hours, you're right. If you can't sleep at LEAST 6 hours, its better to just stay up until the next night.

Perhaps you could compromise with yourself on the earplugs issue. You know your husband is watching the kids and they will probably be just fine, so allow yourself four hours of good sleep with them in. You need to be able to give up that control or your life will fast spin out of control. What good are you to yourself or your family and job if you are short tempered, you feel and look bad, and your nerves are frazzled. Four hours doesn't seem like much but it more than you've BEEN getting.

A natural sleep aid is melatonin or valerian, both which are at health food shops or Whole Foods.

I think recommending something like Xanax to someone is a terrible idea. She's upset because she's not sleeping and not spending time with her family. Xanax will knock you out, sure, but it's also highly addictive and often makes people black out and say/do pretty shitty things.

I've had insomnia issues since I was little. I stayed awake for three days once, fell asleep for twenty minutes, then was awake for another two days before I crashed for a desperate five hours. I have two "types" of insomnia, where I have difficulty both in falling asleep and then in staying asleep. So even if I get to bed at a decent time, I'll probably still have multiple nighttime awakenings, meaning I miss out on deep sleep. I've never tried valerian root, but melatonin makes me feel more rested in less time, so you may want to check it out. Since it can lose its effectiveness, I just use it on nights I know I don't have any time to toss and turn till I (maybe) fall asleep on my own. So if I take it at eleven and fall asleep by midnight, when I wake up at 5, I feel somewhat rested. There are a few different types of melatonin though, so you should find one that helps you to fall and stay asleep.

^ I wasn't being an ass. It just helped me when I couldn't sleep well for days in a row due to stress. I never felt addicted cause all I need is one really amazing sleep every month or so. When I'm really busy with uni sometimes 5 is all I get and I need about 9. I take less than 3 whole Xanax a year cause I'm taking a quarter a month. But I understand she doesn't want meds esp with family history but she didn't mention that in her first post.

Anyhoo. If I do yoga before bed I also sleep better. Think its cause my breathing is so deep. also a really comfy pillow always helps

^Wasn't calling you an ass or trying to suggest it. I've just seen a lot of people start taking stuff like that for "just this week" or something along those lines when they're having sleep issues or anxiety, and it can get bad quickly. I was held captive by another dancer the other night as I fixed my hair and she told me how she's been dancing for eleven years and began taking pain killers her first month to deal with the leg aches and now she's still addicted, etc. Some people can do anything once and never miss it, but others can't. To combat addiction issues, a lot of doctors will prescribe the time-release versions, but I don't think those would help Farrah's issue, since it's not anxiety that's keeping her up, but environment.

Precisely - it totally depends on the person. Jessie was just trying to be helpful. I don't have an addictive personality, and I take klonipin occasionally to help me sleep. Just depends on the person.

Have you tried exercising right before you go to bed? Or audio books with headphones? I assume that you want to take a non drug route or else id say smoke some pot lol But some exercise,a warm bath and listening to a book (or reading one) before bed puts me out when I don't feel like smoking. To make it quick you can skip the exercise. I'm usually In bed by four and up by 11am that way. If I smoke I'm up for like thirty minutes, watch some anime and pass out. I'm up by 8am that way, after going to sleep at around 11pm. Not that you have to follow my steps lol its just how I fix my insomnia because sleeping pills I have been prescribed seem to have after effects, like how you would describe coming off hard drugs like irritability.

You can still hear with ear plugs in, it just kind of dampens house creaks and stuff like that.
If you want to be hyper alert enough to hear housecreaks even when you're asleep, well, that's not sleeping.

And why is your toddler wandering around?
    Ungoogle yourself:

Might go the ear plugs route then.

Lol she's not; its just that we have a small, round shaped bungalow, so we don't have a lot of hallway space. So my bedroom is like, RIGHT by the livingroom, where she can go pound on the door and cry for mommy before my husband can grab her.

Or its just noise in general. I've been pretty much sleeping with my eyes open since she was born, so I hear eeeveeerrryything. My husband tries to occupy her as best as he can, or take her out, but of course occupying a toddler for 8 hours is just about impossible.

I'm just gonna come out and say this....I woke my husband up at around 3 am and told him to pound me until I pass out.

And, I did pass out lol. But couldn't stay asleep.

Same goes for the warm bath and book, which is like my therapy technique anyway. Helps me fall asleep, but as soon as the normal functions of the day start, I can't sleep through it. :/

Yesterday I managed to squeeze in 4 solid, uninterrupted hours and it was my night off, so I decided to try and stay awake all day, then go to bed early....ha!

Went to bed at 1:30 am and got back up at 4 am.

I listen to a sleep hypnosis cd from time to time, also you can buy a sleep hypnosis or a deep relaxation hypnosis mp3 on amazon.com for 0.99 cents. Other things I do to go to sleep - I take a natural sleep aid which consists of lavender, chamomile, and lemon balm. Its all natural ingredients and really works. Another natural ingred is melatonin which also helps to regulate your sleep cycle. Also diphenhydramine HCL which is essentially benadryl (for allergies yeah) is also used in some meds marketed for sleep because it causes sleepiness and I will use that from time to time. Benadryl can be purchased over the counter and is not habit forming as klonopin and other anxiety meds can be (they are classified as controlled substances for a reason).
I would def try to put something on the door to keep the child from interrupting your sleep. You are worth it.
