Default Henna for my hair :)

I've hennaed my hair before, but it's been a couple months and I need to baaaad.
Went to the most awesome Indian grocery today and picked up some Amla oil
(check it out on Amazon-- reviews are crazy good. http://www.amazon.com/Dabur-Vatika-C...7439173&sr=1-4 ) Put it on my boyfriend's hair
as he has crazy untamed curls that dread really easy because he doesn't brush--
his hair looks damn good now! Silky smooth and light

I think I used too much on my hair, but it's pretty crunchy dry and damaged-- it'll
soak in overnight and I'll rinse out whatevers left tomorrow before putting my henna
    on.

So, after looking at this site:
    http://www.hennaforhair.com/mixes/

    scroll down to the thumbnails.

I got very inspired by all the mixes, so I'm now setting up my spices, and lemons, and will juice a beet and add some honey and then let the color release overnight and apply tomorrow.

I'm just happy! I've had a really hectic two days and my boyfriend's out grocery shopping, so I have the place to myself and I'm blaring Tori Amos and feeling young playing with all the pretty colors in my kitchen

I used Indian herbs and oils to grow out my hair after I had chopped it off. I realized it was my security blanket so I wanted to grow it out as fast as I could. I hated wearing hair extensions. My hair grew out thick and super shiny while using henna as well as aritha, amla, and shikakai. I tried many others but these were the main ones I used. Oiling is also essential for healthy hair. Vatika makes a hair oil with coconut oil as its base. I heard amla oil is great as well, however the stores in my area never offered it. Visit the herbal hair care forum on www.longhaircommunity.com for more tips on herbal hair care. I found the experience really fun and rewarding. It's great for the environment and it's all natural compared to conventional hair products. The only drawback with herbs is that it's time consuming. However, I found the end results to be well worth the effort.

Yeah I.was surfing the long hair forum last night.
I saw posts about shikakai but couldn't figure out if
it was a product, or herbs you mixed to wash your hair.

if you did the herbs mixture, what was your ratio?

    And what's aritha?

edit: I saw this on the henna shampoo thread on the long hair forum posted by PandaCake:

"I use 2 teaspoons of aritha, 2 teaspoons of shikakai, 4 teaspoons of amla, and hibiscus tea. If you can get 100grams of each herb, it can last you quite a few months. If you use it a paste much more product is needed.

I just put the herbs in a 1 liter (1 quart) bottle with hot water, let it cool.
I never wet my hair before I rinse it with tea, for some reason it doesn't clean as well. So I part my undamp hair in two (or the back of my head remains sticky) and rinse my hair with the liquid, and use a bucket to catch the liquid. And rinse my hair again. I do this for 5 to 10 minutes and always get clean hair even if it's pre oiled.

When I used commercial shampoo (tried many) I used to have this sebum and skin build up after several weeks and always need to scratch it off with shampoo. Scalp is always either oily or way too dry. Each hairstrand was thinner and I also shed a lot!

With the herb tea method I shed significantly less, my scalp feels much better too and hair grows much faster. Herbs FTW"

I'm spending my afternoon doing research!

Aritha is powdered soapnuts. It's a good idea to add amla when washing with aritha since it can be really drying. I found aritha to be the best "shampoo" since it suds up. Look at it like this: Aritha=shampoo, Amla=conditioner, Shikakai=shampoo/conditioner. Washing my hair with shikakai alone was good enough for me. I didn't need to add any other herbs along with it.

I really like the brand HESH. Since I have long hair, I would use about a tablespoon of each in a large bowl big enough to dip my head in. I'd add a little water to make a paste, then I'd apply it from roots to ends. I let the herbs sit for about five minutes before rinsing. First I'd wash the excess under the faucet in my bath tub, then I'd fill up the big bowl with water and dip my head in it to remove the excess grains of herbs. I'd continue to to this until the water in the bowl is clear with no grains settled at the bottom.
