They offer the classes at my gym. My ex took them she had to book 2 weeks in advance since all the classes got sold out (usually a room of 30+ chix).

Did you learn pole dancing via work or did you take classes? Some studios look down on strippers, so if you're self-taught it may be tricky to get the job.

I learned at a place that was awesome and pro-dancer. Pro-everyone, really! However, there are many places that are very much "no strippers allowed" which is totally stupid.

I personally wouldn't teach it... I think it would be really annoying to have to deal with these peoples' attitudes (since it would come up).

i remember applying to teach classes and you were not permitted to be a dancer if you taught there. you HAD to retire. and they were all former dancers (weird, some more) so i imagine they had an ear to the ground. so messy and not worth it.

i think teaching a normal aerobics class would be super fun though.

As annoying as it is that a lot of pole dancers look down on strippers and don't appreciate where the dancing came from, a lot of actual businesses that profit off teaching it require you to be certified to teach by USPDF (US pole dance federation) standards. And yes, that would require knowing the names of the tricks and moves. You may dance better than some of the girls who went through classes, but most places want to cover their butts and know that you know the "proper" way to teach certain moves. And girls who are in it purely for the sport aspect and may want to go on to compete might not want to take a class from someone who doesn't know the "regulation" names for tricks or doesn't count as a certified teacher. While there are places that are stupidly adamantly "non-stripper," I think their regulations for teachers have more to do with the aspect of turning it into an actual dance-sport. For classes, it's become basically the same thing as ballet. I could learn ballet from videos and friends and practice every day and be just as good as any professional ballerina, but if I hadn't had formal training and didn't know the names of ballet moves, they wouldn't let me teach ballet. It's not just strippers they wouldn't allow to teach - they wouldn't allow a self-taught pole dancer to teach either, because they haven't been "taught how to teach."

I know it's annoying because we tend to think "Well, pole dancing came from stripping and I'm a stripper, therefore why wouldn't I be qualified to teach it?" But when it became a legit "sport," people started really looking at the way certain moves are executed and which muscles to engage not to hurt yourself etc etc. Honestly, I've seen a lot of girls in the club who execute moves poorly and then complain about pain it causes or how difficult it is when they wouldn't be having those problems if they executed it a different way. There's also girls I've seen who are just as graceful and majestic as any pole-sport pole dancer who only learned in the clubs, so it's kinda hit or miss, depending on who they learned it from and how they learned it. The point is, most studios won't want to take the chance of just assuming you know what you're doing by their standards. You have to remember that they're a business that has to cover its butt if they're going to put their students' learning in your hands.

You could go in and ask anyway, but if they turn you down because you aren't certified the way they'd like, try not to get too offended or up-in-arms about them being "anti-stripper." They're most likely just following regulation. If you have taken pole classes, I would just stick to that as your credentials - they may be willing to hire you for beginner classes if you've learned from someone else they consider certified.

^Exactly. I agree with the above verbatim. Think of it as a method of covering your own ass as well.

...Though I have to wonder, if you were to acheive any pole-related titles or credits would the lack of credentials be overlooked?

feels like theyre being on a high horse. in ballet i understand why you would need names, [besides its like centuries old] but im sure pole dancing didnt start out with two strippers in the 60s go 'lets invent the scorpion leg hook' or some shit. none of it even makes sense and im sure no one cares as long as you can explain.

this is why i kinda have mixed feelings about this pole dancing thing. people read too much into it and a lot of areas are hyposcritical or discriminating. are they legally allowed to reject someone [studying or teaching dancing] just because they were/are/will be strippers??

was great, i saw the end of year teachers showcase at a pole school and the teachers [who werent strippers] wore outfits i wont even wear to the club [pink n black pvc barely covering anything with matching boots] doing quite slutty dancemoves and they reckon its 'cute' but continue to look down on strippers?

i was a gymnast [level7] and did a bit of coaching so i still no how to teach/coach and have taught other girls dance at the club. they wont teach you to teach at a class either youll just have a better idea how to copy a teacher

Insurance may also be an issue. Some companies won't insure an instructor who hasn't gone through a nationally accredited training program.

It depends on the studio...I first learned from a dancer. She actually pointed me in the right direction for starting to dance! Some companies care, some don't...

The thing that may make it difficult to squeeze in with all your other work is that you would probably need some kind of first aid certification, and possibly a trainer certification and/or to have already taken the beginners courses with that studio. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, and if you are worried about a meltdown, maaaybe not the best idea.

Side note - for those who are pissed at the hypocrisy of pole dancing studios not allowing dancers or looking down on dancers, check out my thread in camming connection about not being able to compete in Miss Pole Dance if you are in the adult industry. Bullsh*t

Where I live there are 2 main pole dance studios. One is owned by an ex-dancer but the instructors are not ex-dancers and clearly have a lot of training in the mechanics of pole-dancing. The other studio is not owned by an ex-dancer but all of its instructors are ex-dancers and have no real training in teaching. I guess it really depends on where you live and what's available.

definitely. they name certain things because they're being used in an impractical manner. again, attempts to mainstream sex work is the most absurd thing to me and this is a good example as to why.

it's a great hustle, taking money from college students and whatnot and teaching them a skill they will never use, but it ends up seeming to me to be very anti-stripper, and so i'm kind of like.....
