    Default elavil?

So I've been put on a new pain medication called elavil. It's used primarily for depression, but also for pain, sleep aid, and bulimia. So my doctor thought it'd be perfect for me since I've had issues sleeping lately, have an eating disorder, and am in pain.

I've read about it on the nih website and also webmd. So far so Good. No mention of severe weight gain, which is a huge concern of mine.

Anyone have any experience with this Med?

Amyltriptaline, right? It definately helps you sleep, but I gained a ton taking it (which was partly the idea - I've had anorexia/bulimia since my mid teens and my doc was determined to get my BMI up) but meds ary from person to person, so it could work for you. Also, it's worth mentioning i didn't magically put on weight, i gained because it made me feel like bingeing, then fall asleep staright after. if you watch what you eat i'm pretty sure it won't be a problem.

    Yep, Amyltriptaline.

    So far, no binging urges.

I was prescribed this medication in 2001 for interstitial cystitis. It was given to me for the off label uses: pain and being able to sleep through the night. I had a very adverse reaction to it, so I only took it 10 days. I lost a pound a day the entire ten days. It made me hear voices and gave me extreme paranoia. My physical symptoms were gone, but the mental symptoms were worse.

This will likely not happen to you but if you start to feel weird in any way, call your Dr. Imipramine can be a good substitute for Elavil. I was switched to imipramine and took it for a year without incident.

I took it for a few months about 5 years ago when I was in Nursing school and I absolutely could not go to sleep early enough to function during the day. I didn't have any major side effects, other than feeling slightly tired all the time.

My dad has been on it for years, he used to have constant severe headaches, and it was the only thing that got rid of them. He has had no side effects.
