Hear me ramble about random things:
"Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: 'A horrible person.' We weren't even testing for that."

Fine, I'll say it. He was an asshole. I know of no other company that markets their products by attacking the consumers of their competition. Their "I'm a Mac / I'm a PC" ad campaign was a thinly-veiled way of saying "Don't be a nerd. PC users are dorks. Use an Apple and be one of the cool kids." Fuck you Steve Jobs. You turned on your own kind to get rich.

^^
Oh please, that was the catchiest ad campaign in a long time. And it worked. So does the near-elitist "... then you don't have an iPhone" campaign. And its true. It alludes to a fundamental superiority of the product. That's the entire point of marketing. Do you want this hotter, sleeker more attractive option that does everything you like, possibly works much better and everyone covets? Or do you want a PC/android/whatever else is out there that's cheaper?
I'll take the former, thank you. But I'm an uppity bitch, that way.
Apple is probably the only corporation that I have true brand-loyalty for. I know all about how they do it and how Jobs spent years perfecting the Apple experience from the launches to the stores to the boxes to the products. I love all of that. I think that, in and of itself was genius and the fact that the products are so outstanding, they're nearly addictive is just icing on the cake. If the electronic industry were like a strip club, Steve Jobs would have been the hottie top-earner that hogs the champagne room all night.

Steve Jobs made technology, not tv commercials.

He micro-managed the entire scheme and aesthetic of Apple, as we know it. He absolutely made commercials. He made Apple's marketing plan a lifestyle.

I agree that Steve Jobs was an effective leader. I agree that Apple makes wonderful, beautiful, user-friendly products. I agree that Apple's marketing is probably some of the best there has ever been.
None of that has a thing to do with my criticism of him. Yes, it was an effective ad campaign. Attack your competition all you like, but there's no reason to attack the consumers of your competition. Its effectiveness doesn't change that it was a dick move. The ends don't justify the means.
