    Default Dancing Pain!

Lately, I'll be at work or come home and my knees are killing me from moving around the stage. What do you ladies do besides stretching to help with the pain on really busy nights or that's built up over the week? Is there a product to buy? Maybe something I can cover them with on stage? HELP! Thanks.

In time your body will get used to it, but until then dancing in knee/thigh length stockings or using a rug (if permitted at your club) will help.

It will get better as your body gets used to it, and also as you gain more experience.

If you are doing lots of floor work, try to avoid putting all your weight on your knees as much as you can. Try supporting yourself more with your arms or shoes when possible. Sometimes when I get really tired I will just lay on my back and "dance" like that for a bit.

If you've got a lot of bruising, try Arnica. I use it as a cream, I got it from Publix. I had to go to the pharmacy and ask them to order it for me. It helps the bruise and the soreness from it go away a lot faster.

When I danced there was a point early on where I aggravated some old knee injuries. Thigh high boots were perfect for covering the neoprene sport braces I had to wear...and had the added bonus of being a great cushion for stage work. Also, take about 3 motrin maybe an hour before your shift. Don't do it for too long because it's hard on your stomach, but it will get you through the newbie weeks.

Epsom salt baths and, for the long stretch, glucosamine supplements. I'm going through the same thing now

Nope there's nothing to buy and nothing to really do (except what you're already doing along with some hot baths/showers after work). With time your body will get used to it. Make sure your eating well, drinking enough and keep your vitamins up.

Arnica, glucosomine, Epsom salt, vitamins, stretching, rest. Thigh highs or boots.

Arnica also comes in pill form, which you dissolve under your tongue. Combine that with the cream/gel (you can get both at any natural foods store). You can also try Traumeel, which is a cream that contains arnica and other things.

Hot Yoga, Glucosamine Chondroitin, and Omega 3 fish oil to help reduce inflammation.

This is gonna sound funny....but stop crawling around on the floor!

I literally stopped doing any and all floorwork when I had to get my knee drained in 2003. Since then I have not crawled on a hard surface for a few dollars and it hasn't hurt my income one bit. Yes my stage show is boring because I just walk around and do the sexy stripper strut.

For the most part (there will ALWAYS be exceptions as some clubs are more stage based) the money is made in lapdances and VIP, not dollar by dollar.

4th week dancing and the insides of my knees hurt. Like ball and socket? Would icing them help?

Yes, icing is good. I would do it right after work, and also elevate your legs.

Don't get on the floor so much til they start to heal. And even then, don't do floorwork as much. I've had to stop doing floor work because my knees can't take it anymore.

Also, as you get into your late 20s and early 30s (please listen because you don't want to have to go through what I've been through in the last year)

    BE PREVENTATIVE

Take a women's multi-vitamin with an AM/PM formulation and GET YOUR SLEEP!
I've been battling Fibromyalgia since late 2010, it's VERY common in women in their Mid 30s who have burned the candle at both ends: working late nights, not getting sleep, living on diet pills/fatburners and energy drinks.

Over time all those stimulants and lack of sleep basically make your nerves keep firing all the time, 24/7. The result is not being able to sleep and (for me) pain all over the body that doesn't go away.

I never took a multivitamin until my docs put me on vitamin therapy 3 months ago. I'm in shock! I have always eaten really clean and healthy, but our foods are so vitamin deficient that you can't get what you need from your food alone. The Omega 3 Fish Oil, Magnesium, and MultiVitamin did more in 3 months to relieve my chronic pain than all of the pain relievers put together!

@BritneyIreland Thanks for sharing your story, I absolutely need to keep my health in mind and avoid damaging things as much as possible (floor work, etc).

All of the answers here are on point--but I wanted to add that I second the idea of taking MSM/Glucosamine supplements. I don't think we realize how hard dancing is on our joints at times. I have developed hip snapping syndrome over the years (I imagine) from doing the splits and basic contortionism and it started to migrate down to my knees. There was a time where I couldn't even make the most minimal movement without making a bunch of cracking sounds. After taking MSM and Glucosamine faithfully for about 5 months now I will only experience snapping/cracking once every couple of days--huge difference!!

When I first started dancing, my knees and ankles were screaming bloody mercy. For me, the resolve was as simple as switching to a lighter shoe. Now I only wear different variations of Pleaser lucites.

Yeah it sucks how this job is so harsh on the body, but yeah doing it fulltime would kill me. Maybe excersing, eating right, and having variety in their routine helps. However, poll tricks and floor work is tough on the arms and legs sometimes.
