    Default Working with flu/a cold?

Do you do it? I hardly ever get ill, but the past few days have been pretty nasty. I'm probably not going to work tonight or tomorrow, but if I call in sick I need to pay my house fees anyway (about 150 GBP per night) and I don't have that kind of money to spare. On the flip side, if I go in I'll get sicker, and I doubt very much any guy is going to want a dance with snotty-nosed old me :/

What do you usually do? And how ill do you need to be before you don't come in?

Stay home Trust me it's not worth it, and it's inconsiderate. If I even detect a sniffle I stay home, but them I'm a huge germ-o-phobe. I hate it when I'm at work and we have fucking lungs being coughed up in the dressing room. Get some rest. You'll only prolong your illness.

I agree. Don't risk getting everyone else sick. Don't risk making it worse.

I agree with the above. If it helps, think of it this way: you're paying the 150 in exchange for your health. You'd spend that on a pair of awesome shoes, right? Your health is more important! Stay home, have some soup, get some sleep.

Dumb question, but is it really that important to stay home even for a light cold? If I deigned to stay home because of a cold at my regular job, my boss would laugh his ass off even if it means my coworkers would catch it. Why is dancing different?

I stay home when I'm sick. Part of the reason I adore being a dancer so much is that I set my own hours, and as a result get to come and go as I please. Besides that, I see no reason to wear myself down even more. Stay home, take care of yourself, feel better and then go back to work. It's not worth it. Besides that, no one will thank you if you get everyone else sick.

Ouch those are steep fees! I agree stay home if you can, will you make back those fees on your next night working? If you do go in, load up on those flu tablets with decongestant and paracetamol in them, use hand sanitiser all night and obviously try not to appear ill and gross near anyone.

Hmm, good point about not spreading it. I honestly didn't think about that :/
Yeah, the house fees are crazy high, but so far i've been taking home 200 a night on top of that. Thing is, i've only been at this club for 4 shifts! so paying out 300 AND missing a weekend is going to take a serious chip out of my house deposit i think i'ma have to go in tomorrow...

I wouldn't feel too guilty about going to work with a cold. I've done it a few times. You go to other public places with a cold, right? Would you miss a shift because of a cold at any other job you've had? And of course you'll be careful not to sneeze or cough on anyone or share drinks, right? If you need the money, don't feel bad about going to work.

I'm sick and staying home. It really bothers me when I see other girls coming in all fucked up... We don't even get fees for not coming in.

Im in the same boat as you. I was up all night Thursday/ early Friday vomiting. Today was supposed to be my 3rd shift and I felt awful about calling in - but I wouldn't have made any money feeling like this!! I am bringing them a doctor's note - but I have a feeling I'm going to have to pay some fines as well... I'll be pretty pissed off if I do...

I have worked at clubs like that before (cough, Seattle, cough). You should be able to fax them a doctor's note. See if you can get into a cheap clinic. It will be way cheaper than 300 in fees, or maybe super cheap if you have insurance.

^ I'm in the UK, so I don't need to worry about insurance etc, although I imagine the other girls on this thread would find that helpful

I guess it would be worth a try, but I don't think an NHS doc would write a sick note for just a bad cold, hence the post. I'd go to a normal job with this kind of illness, it's just dancing is a bit different from the other jobs I've had, so I wanted to check with you lot.
For the record, I went in tonight and was ok. There were a few moments that I started spluttering my guts up, but luckily I managed to avoid emptyting my lungs over anyones lap! Also they let me off the sick days fees, thank god!

Did you threaten to cough on them? Or did they do it to be nice?

I'm rarely sick, but when I do get a cold it does not stop me from going in... if I'm feeling well enough that is. I need the money. What do I care if I infect the customers? They probably have it coming anyways. (Just my passive aggressive side talking, lol)

One of the perks of being a dancer is taking time off when you need it.

    Stay home.

I stay home when I'm sick. The reason I think it's different from any other job or just plain going out in public is that at any other job or random public places, I am not getting so freaking close to people. I don't press myself up against other coworkers and breath my sickie germs all over them. Unless you have a tissue, whatever part of your body you cover with is going to end up with germs on it, and if you're sneezing/coughing up a storm, you're not going to run to the bathroom to rinse off every time in the middle of work. And even if you know you're being careful, nobody wants a dance from Sniffles the stripper who constantly has a tissue in her hand to capture her sneezes. Women on here talk all the time about how gross they feel after work rubbing up on strangers - it goes both ways. They get everything that's on us too. This job is much more high contact than most other jobs so it only makes sense to keep it to yourself.

Unless you really need the money, I think it's better for your recovery and more considerate to stay at home.

I agree that you shouldn't go in and risk getting other dancers sick. On the plus side if you do go in with a cold, you might run into a client who has a fetish for it. About two years ago, a guy offered me an extra $20 to get him sick when I was dancing with a cold. I didn't (mostly because I didn't know what he wanted me to do and I was too taken off guard to even ask) but I've since learned that some guys actually have a weird fetish for catching colds from girls they find attractive. A friend of mine was actually paid over $100 just to cough in a guys face when she had a cold. Its kind of nasty but you might actually be able to bank if you go in sick and find the right guy!

But this isn't really a perk for her because she basically has to PAY to stay at home.
