Question Pores like craters on my face

Background: since 4th grade i've had acne and horrible skin. I eventually grew out of that in college and no longer have acne though i do break out occasionally (i have combination skin, btw). the problem i've been having and haven't been able to get rid of is my huge pores. i think it look disgusting and if they were smaller my complexion would be excellent. I don't wear makeup very often and when i do I wash it off before bed. I use a gentle exfoliator everyday and clean my makeup off with a gentle cleanser and moisturize with jajoba oil at night. I don't use a moisturizer during the day because my face gets oily really fast and a moisturizer seems to make it worse. any products or tips for shrinking pores or am i doomed to have this complexion forever?

Do you rinse your face with cold water after washing?

^ Agreed, cold water does wonders for both skin and hair. I never wash my face with warm water anymore...that thing about warm water cleaning pores out better is just an old wives tale. I also always rinse my hair with cold water after I wash it, and I rinse my legs with cold water after I shave. I think you'll start to notice a serious difference.

As far as products go, I had some minor acne scarring as well as really terrible blackheads/large pores on my chin. I use Caudalie Vinoperfect Complexion Correcting Radiance Serum. It's sort of expensive, but you only use four or five drops at night before going to bed. My acne scarring has pretty much disappeared, and the pores on my chin have shrunk, and the blackheads are minimal now. I highly recommend it.

I not only have large pores, but I also have several pitted/ ice pick scars on my face from past acne. Things I have found to help significantly- using Retin- A, drinking a TON of H2O, and cutting out Caffeine. I think these things really just make skin more plump, so pores just somehow look smaller/ skin smoother, but the difference is CRAZY.

With RetinA, it's best to wash your face with warm water so your pores can open up more for the medecine to seep in deeper. Next day you'll see a difference. I love retina a.

I have the same problem, used Retin A and my skin just BURNED ugh, that was such a terrible experiance. I couldn't go to work for two days. I'm going to try the cold water rinse and the serum to see if it's any help.

Microdermabrasions are a life saver - seriously, I highly recommend them for having giant pores. Im about done with a package series and my pores have been shrunken and beaten into submission

A "Witchhazel" based toner may help (it's natural & very gentle on the skin).

^Agree with the other ladies, but I wante dto add...

If you just have large pores, cold water etc will help shrink the appearance, but you'll still have large pores.

Do you use a good primer under your makeup? I have very large pores too, but when I use primer under my foundation, my face looks amazing. I get so many compliments on my skin, and I'm always like "if you saw me without all this gunk" haha.

    I love Smashbox's primer

Microdermabrasion for sure. I danced with a girl who used to have ice pick acne scars and wore pancake make up to hide the wreckage of what acne had done to her skin. A year of microdermabrasion later she does not wear make up anymore (unless its for work or going out) and her personality has changed from a wall flower to someone who can hold her head up high. She cries when she tells the story, it changed her life that drastically.

I heard that laser genesis shrinks pores, and so does pearl laser (this one requires more down time..a few days...genesis doesn't cause peeling, pearl does).

I would say try the microdermabrasion or a chemical peel. While I've never had large pores or "ice pick scars" I have had mild acne and for me the chemical peel made my skin almost perfect. The microdermabrasion worked as well but it caused me to have dry, flaky skin for along time afterwards.I would assume you could get the same results on large pores with these procedures.

It's been said already but Microdermabrasion is amazing! Get it regularly(once a month) for best results.

Also, when your face is healing after microderm or any laser, stay away from smoking or smoky places...it will slow the healing and maybe mess up the skin results...not make it as beautiful (ever notice that when you're a smoker it takes foreeever for little cuts and scabs to heal? same idea with your face skin). And take lots of vitamins (just don't overdose on them) and flax oil to help your new skin come back beautifully

The best face treatment I have ever found is to buy a tub of yogurt and then take some out (like a 1/3 maybe) and then fill the space with aspirin tablets. Put it in the fridge and let it set overnight and then stir it. Make sure you put in enough aspirin to make a nice thick paste. I buy several giant economy bottles of aspirin for this, or more. Then once it mixes I just set it in the shower and use it about once a night. Best to remove makeup after dancing, but don't get it in your eyes. I use it as a scrub. Leave it on for a minute or two, let the acid work a little and then gently exfoliate by rubbing gently. Rinse off in the shower, flutter eyes under water to ensure there is none in your eyes. It is amazing. I do it at night for two reasons, to get off the makeup and because your face will be shiny for a while so why not do it before bed? That way you aren't shiny for work the next day.

I used to use Neutrogena alpha hydroxy lotion afterwards but it's too much. I recently started just using a calming night cream, one with hyaluronic acid in it and it works great ^_^ !

I have always had problem skin, oily, clogged pores, zits... but with this regimen I have nearly flawless skin.

Shoot - there used to be a Dior Creme that I used that was OTC, but I don't think it's made anymore ...

Is that the real stuff? I've searched high and low for Retin A online without a prescription but they all turned out to be fakes or require you send in your prescription before they would ship.

I also buy Retin A w/o a script. I get mine at www.bajapharmacy.com. Real stuff and happy with service.

Isn't that kind of harsh for everyday use?

Also, the Neutrogena microderm abrasion kit that you use at home is AWESOME! I love it! and after I use it people always compliment me on my skin. I need to start using it again.

Sometimes big pores are hereditary and there is only so much you can do. Does your mom or dad have large pores too? I think you should visit a dermatologist to get an idea of what would work best for you and go from there.

To the OP: if you do microderm abrasion or these mentioned scrubs don't combine it with the retin A. Retin A, especially in the beginning is really harsh and you should use it sparingly until you find how you react to it. I started nightly and was scared away from it b/c my face was peeling so bad. Now I use it only 2-3 nights a week and dilute it with a moisturizer per the advice of my dermatologist. The Retin A is amazing though and you should give it a try.

Hylauric acid supplements are AWESOME! I take 2 a day and my skin has never looked better.

I suppose that would depend on how vigorously you rub the scrub. I think my skin is used to it, I have been doing it for like three years.

I have started doing a baking soda scrub in conjunction with my aspirin scrub though not sure if before or after is better, been doing baking soda after, I heard the baking soda can help reduce pores. And have a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfIN5...eature=related

Any estheticians office that sells Obagi products will sell you the Obagi brand of retin-A. Just call around, it’s how I’ve always done it. Using the Obagi website to locate sellers of their products in my area (I’ve done it is CA and AZ) just call around. I ask for Obagi Refissa and have never needed a prescription, just swing by and pick it up. I use Refissa because it has a moisturizing agent in it along with the Retin-A. In fact, the last place I bought it from wasn’t even an estheticians office it was an opthemologists office. But I found them via the Obagi.com site so that’s where I got my Retin A in Tucson.
