Default What did you grow up watching?

This is going to be one of those just-for-shits-and-giggles threads, with a good amount of nostalgia mixed in.

I was talking about this with my parents earlier...I see the kid shows my brother watches and I am blown away by how bad they are. The stuff I grew up with was sooo much better...though I'm sure every generation says that.

So what TV shows and/or movies do you remember watching when you were a kid? I really remember Eureka's Castle, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, My Little Pony Tales, Looney Tunes, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Care Bears. I also remember a weird anime version of The Little Mermaid. As I got older, I remember Legends of the Hidden Temple, Salute Your Shorts (though my parents never let me watch it), Are You Afraid of the Dark, and a Disney show called Ocean Girl.

    How about you guys?

I'm old and remember watching I Love Lucy and the Andy Griffith Show on network tv.

Just kidding, not that old but sometimes seems like it. Anyway, I grew up in the 70's and remember watching these shows on network: the Brady Bunch, the Partridge Family, Emergency (show about firefighters, I wanted to be a firefighter), Charlie's Angels, Dukes of Hazzard, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Welcome Back Kotter, Mork and Mindy, That's Incredible, Real People, Little House on the Prairie. I'm sure I'm forgetting others but so many of these shows looking back were pretty bad.

Syndication, pretty much every show that was relevant from the 50's-70's, including animated.

My favorite animated from my childhood were the Flinstones, Justice League, Popeye, Smurfs, Shirt Tails, Jetsons, Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, Spiderman (animated)and Schoolhouse Rock.

In the 80's I watched these: Night Court, the Wonder Years, Full House, Family Ties, Growing Pains, Facts of Life, Cosby Show, Dynasty. Cheers, Who's the Boss, Head of the Class, Perfect Strangers, Benson, Webster, Charles In Charge, and Saved By The Bell. Many of these ended after I graduated high school but they started in the 80's.

I know this isn't the complete list but what comes to mind. In my teens I also watched a lot of MTV and cable (mostly videos).

Fraggle Rock, My Little Pony, Salute Your Shorts, Hey Dude, Are you Afraid of the Dark, all of the shows on Snick, whatever that stupid show was where there was a live audience and people got slimed and hit in the face with pies, In Living Color (remember Homey don't play that?), Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Doug, Saved By The Bell, and I fucking loved the movie Labyrinth!!!

I remember watching The Neverending Story and being scared to death for half of it. I also remember LOVING Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but always hiding behind the couch at the steamroller part. I still get a little twitchy when I see steamrollers...

I also loved the Neverending Story!!!! Forgot all about that one.....

What scared the shit out of me was Chucky. And then my sister got a Chucky doll and would randomly set it in the hallway and be like, "I don't know how he got there..." What a bitch!

Oh Lawdy....this is going to show my age...but you're right. The stuff these days is appalling compared to when I was young. We were so much HAPPIER then....everything these days is full of attitude, anger......and sex and violence. Far too much too young IMO....!

Well anyway - as a young girl, UK series would be 'Doctor Who', 'The Magic Roundabout', 'Black Beauty', 'White Horses', 'Catweazle', 'Robinson Crusoe'...then later things like 'Love Thy Neighbour', 'Are You Being Served?', 'Blake's Seven', and 'Red Dwarf'...and 'The Muppets'. Plus, 'Top Of The Pops' was a constant throughout my life.

US series as a girl were things like 'Banana Splits', 'The Monkees', 'The Flintstones', 'Top Cat', 'Get Smart', 'The Man From Uncle', 'Mork and Mindy', 'I Love Lucy', 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and 'Dick Van Dyke Show', 'The Andy Williams Show' (for Donny Osmond) and 'The Partridge Family' (for David Cassidy......swoon)....then later, stuff like 'M.A.S.H.', 'Happy Days', 'The Rockford Files', 'Kojak', 'Cagney and Lacey', 'Dukes Of Hazzard', 'Starsky and Hutch', 'Dallas', 'Dynasty' and 'The Colbys'.......

Yes! Plus Wild & Crazy Kids (that would go over well now...), Hey Dude and the cartoons on Nick; Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy. I remember having to fight my older siblings all the time to watch Nick.

Saved by the Bell #1 favorite though, always be a special place in my heart for Kelly Kapowski

Also, oddly Days of our Lives...my oldest sister wouldn't take me to the pool until it was over, which was every day during the summer. I hated it and always think of all the cannonballs and trips down the waterside I missed when a soap pops up, and it cut down on my time to scope out an older girl I had a mega crush on who tanned in early afternoon. Damn you Days of our Lives!!!

In the mornings before school, I would watch Star Blazers (sci-fi cartoon).
After school, I'd watch re-runs of the Banana Splits, The Krofft Superstar Hour (H.R. Pufnstuff), Hogan's Heroes, and Three's Company (can't believe my parents let me watch this).

Banana Splits rocks! I wish they would put that on DVD. Speaking of kid shows anyone remember Electra Woman and Dyna Girl? it was a short lived action series on Saturday mornings. I also watched on Saturdays the Muppet Show. Speaking of which I never forgot Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, and Electric Company.

I watched most of those as well, but many were already in syndication when I was a child. I have mentioned this, but with regards to the Monkees, I discovered them when a neighbor gave me a bunch of their records and didn't know they had a show until my mom told me they did and it was on tv that day (the local station ran it every summer). Rather odd considering my mom never liked them and generally wasn't into Rock and Roll much.

I watched I Love Lucy as a kid as well (still do)and thought the show was current. I remember seeing her on some show and being surprised she looked so old and wondering why she didn't look like she did. My mom then said the show was over 20 years old.

I was gonna say The Banana Splits too, but didn't think anyone would know what it was. I actually dressed up as one of the Banana Splits for Halloween one year growing up.

KellyDancer's list is pretty close to mine, plus some of Margarita Villain's.

Speaking of Banana Splits when I was a little girl I wanted a Banana Splits cake for my birthday. It was a cake that had figurines of them on it. My parents bought one for my brother's birthday and when my birthday rolled around a month later there was not another one at the store. I bawled for months because they couldn't get me one. To this day some 35+ years later I still remind my parents of that.

OMG, I use to LOVE "Never Ending Story". Aww, that was my favorite movie. I had a crush on the boy, wanted the dragon, and use to sing that song over and over. LOL. Now I want to watch it.

Movies I loved were "ET"(of course),"Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", "All Dogs go to Heaven"....

There is more I can't think of right now.

    BTW, i'm an 80's baby.

i wasnt allowed to watch TV as a kid. At around 6th grade my parents started letting me watch some tv... we didnt have cable so i watched Friends. Which is how i learned about sex. Oops.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I only ever watched movies on the weekends when they'd run the sci-fi/horror marathons... so I remember The Blob, Them!, Clash of the Titans, Predator, Logan's Run... and the occasional episode of The Andy Griffith show or Star Trek.

My brother used to watch a lot of TV, so these shows you're all naming sound familiar... but they're more like "I was practicing tumbling runs down the hallway past the room my brother was watching TV in so I've heard the names" than actually familiar.

    I remember

A-Team, Airwolf, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, then we couldn't afford TV just syndicated cable wasn't out yet. The TV was sold.

Then a few years later we got a color tv again, but just syndicated again. Really just PBS. Monty Python and the Flying Circus, Cosmos, Nova.

A better TV and cable in my Senior year. Star Trek the Next Generation. Star Trek TOS, and we had HBO but, that was good for a movie once a week.

I am fucking awful at Pop culture trivia. I hate sitcoms. My parents loved them; so I cam peripherally remember MASH and Threes Company.

DUDE, Clash of the Titans was like my favorite movie ever when I was a kid. I used to have this thing when I was real little where I would call movies or TV shows by the main character's name instead of by the title. So Clash of the Titans was Perseus, The Simpsons was Bart Simpson, Star Wars was Luke Skywalker, etc. I don't know why I did that.

Lolikola mentioned Captain Planet. That show was AWESOME (actually it was probably atrocious). I remember everyone felt so bad for the Heart kid, cause wtf is that? Everyone else gets some badass element and this kid gets totally shafted.
