Have you been to the doctors? Sounds a daft question, but losing that much blood is not really healthy for you, and they may be able to do something to help you.

    Go to body business.
But it sounds like you need some black strap molasses. Look for unsulphered and take 3 tablespoons (it tastes bad but it's so worth it on your period, or you can mix it into coffee or shakes) at a time 1-3 times a day.

Also, do you have sea sponges? The nice thing about sea sponges is that you can pack more than one in there to block off and soak up the blood. Great for periods. You can even have sex with them in, though I wouldn't have any penetration if you're using like 3 for extra heavy flow.

This^! For the love of God, please, GO TO THE DOCTOR! I no longer have heavy periods, but I spoke to a nurse when I did, & she told me that if I bled a certain amount an hour, measured by the freqency/necessity of a tampon/pad change in an hour's time, that I should then visit the emergency room. & if I did not, I would possibly need a transfusion in the future! Until you go to the doctor, try to rest as much as possible, elevating your legs/feet. Also, have some red meat, preferably steak. Just sayin'.

^this is true. If you're not much of a meat eater, you are depleting your stores of Iron, so you can get some iron pills (blackstrap also has it.)

Are you have any other symptoms aside from heavy bleeding? And, are you able to go to a doctor-- like a planned parenthood, or do you have insurance available? Some people don't have the options of going to a doctor until stuff gets REALLY serious. Not saying it's right, but she might have to work through some at home options before going to the doctor.

Years ago, my mom had gotten her period the same way. Since this was not the 1st time this happened, she called the doctor that morning & let him know what was going on & he told her to hurry & come in. When she got there she did in fact have to get a transfusion, but unfortunately she never got it done that day (even though they tried their best to make her stay).
She had problems with that for years though. About 2 yrs ago she FINALLY decided to get something done & she had to get some type of surgery done (I can't remember the name of it right now), but it was a 1 day thing then she relaxed for like 3 hours & was able to go home.

yeah, buffy, if you can try and go to your dr or planned parenthood. it sounds to me like you may have fibroids (sp?). you don't want whatever the problem is to get so bad that you it effects you fertility.

I had my period for like a month in 9th grade and it was always heavy and I later found out it was a (mild) bleeding disorder. Doesn't bother me at all, but def doesn't sound as intense as yours. Hopefully you made your way to a doctor, let us know if everything is okay.

since i have IUD (mirena) i no longer have periods at all. mine used to be really heavy and lasted for 10-12 days.
when i was escorting, ages ago, my gyn told me i can take oxytocin (not to be confused with oxycotin) pills if i need the bleeding to stop for a few hours. it did help. but for a few hours only. so its not a cure.

really, go see a doctor. if you are bleeding that much and like that, its not really a good sign, you know. there could be a zillion reasons for that and im afraid no one will be able to tell you over the net what exactly is going on and what should be done. you should see a doctor for that.

What exactly is the definition of a heavy period? I guess I mean to say what's so heavy that it's abnormal?

I just started my period also, but ever since I had kids it's been heavy. I guess I never saw it as a problem...just as "this is the way it is"
Now you make me wonder if there's something wrong with me lol.

Mine are much like you explained, I could easily stand up and gush blood everywhere for the first 2 days.

I was just joking to myself yesterday that I probably go through almost a whole 40 pack of tampons per month mostly just in those 2 days. I change tampons PLUS wear a pad cuz I'll bleed through within an hour.

But I never really questioned it because it's only for 2 days. Then it stops completly for 1 day. Then it returns for 1 more day very light.

I actually kinda appreciate it I guess. I sorta joke to myself that my bodys so lazy it tries to bleed it all out within the first 2 days just so it can have a day off...
Overall it lasts only 4 days total which to me is wonderful compared to some periods I've heard other girls talk about 7-10 days

Anyway this is the way my period has been since I had my last kid almost 4 years ago. So I'm just use to it.
I have thought about getting the pill that helps stop periods, but eh..I'm fixed for one. So is it worth paying all that just to stop periods, when I can't get knocked up anyway.

If I were rich I'd say hell yes.haha

But I can't afford it right now and the sponge thing works after my initial blood gushing 2 days. Usually on those days I just make videos instead of live webcam.

Check this out if your in need of some video or phone scripts
These are good for clips4sale videos possibly even phone sex if your more of a storyteller.

i will have to find it, i still have some pills left somewhere. i bet they have an expiration date sometime back in last century lol
so when i find it, i will tell you how many mgs were there in a pill. i remember i was taking two pills and then two more after 30 mins.
it didnt affect my periods at all. just stopped the bleeding for a while. and i had no side effects.

nope, cant find them where i thought they could be. so they are gone. but i believe you can ask your doc about it, or just google it. this was a prescription medicine anyway, so you will have to see a doc for that.

My periods, for most of my life, lasted on avergage ten days, five or six of which kept me confined to the house, and for at least four hours of those, I sat on the loo. (Lucky I've always worked for myself!)

I had a mirena fitted and bled conatsntly for 18 months. I've tried noristhisterone, which is meant to stop periods completely but this made no difference. 5 months ago i had thermal abalation which has helped...I now bleed for seven days, only two of which I have to spend at home.

Because it was all so extreme for me, how I am now is considered an excellent result, so if you're lighter than I was, you should be fine with the ablation.

Please do see your doctor, there will be something for you. By most women's standards my periods are still outrageous, but the ablation has changed my life.

Did you breastfeed? You may be low in calcium. Take a mega calcium supplement just in case. Won't hurt and in many cases it does cut pms and bleeding by 50%.

    Buffy,

Same thing happened to me. There are options, but you have to go see the DR first to discuss them. I first tried a type of birth control and that made me spot non-stop so Dr. took me off that and we went for ablation therapy, but I was 100% certain I did not want anymore kids because getting pregnant after having the procedure can be very risky. Many GYN offices can perform it right there, but they should evaluate the size of your uterus and some other things to determine if it's safer to do it in the hospital. I was told my uterus was enlarged so I had to go to the hospital outclinic which worked out well because while they were also tying my tubes, they found some endometriosis to take care of. I had NO idea I even had any of that but it did explain the painful cycles I had.

Ablation doesn't guarantee that your periods will stop completely but it will greatly reduce them or stop them altogether (I spot quarterly and it's a teeny tiny amount). I still get PMS-y, but without the bleeding.

Can I ask how long it took for you to get the full benefit of ablation? I had it five months ago and my doctor was a bit vague. Things have inproved for me but I'm hoping for further improvement.

I'm covered under my partner's insurance, so I have no idea how much it would cost. If I can find the paperwork from it later, I'll let you all know. I'm guessing 2K+ but again, mine was done in the hospital outpatient clinic and I had other stuff done too. The nurses said I had the "blue plate special"/"the works"..well everything short of a hysterectomy...gosh I was in pain for 3 days but it was worth it.

I had this problem too... Heavy periods and strong, really strong cramps. I had to stay in bed for 1 or days every month due to the pain. Now I'm using Mirena too, but at the time my doctor prescribed me birth control pills and said I should take 2 of them if I noticed some spotting and that I should not take the 7 day pause (some pills are 4, I believe) if I noticed my period was too heavy. After 3 months my period became really lighter and I stopped having cramps.

Can you get birth control pills over the counter in the USA? I'm not suggesting she should do it, I'm just curious... Like, do you have to get a prescription every month in order to buy them?

I was having abnormal periods where they would be heavy, would last too long, and would return way too quickly. It was as if something on the inside had broken and I'm spilling out blood. I had my period for 19 days in a row once. A doctor put me on a birth control pill to control this issue, and I'm not bleeding as heavy as I had been. But if I miss like even one day of taking the pill, my damn period comes right back. In the month of September, I've gotten my period twice. It's fucking crazy.

Within 2 months after the procedure it all stopped. Occasionally I will spot just a teeny tiny bit, but most months there's nothing. They told me there are no guarantees it will work and like 20% of women would get their period again. So far so good though. I can work every week now instead of taking off when I have my period.

Peroxide is good for getting rid of blood, just make sure it's wet, whether it's still wet or you added water to it. -sigh- my bed would never have lasted if not for peroxide... or at least not in a state I would want it in
