As Anna said, I knew this, but never had an issue about it. When I opened my stores, no one asked me about it (and I didn't know it back then). It's either a new rule or they didn't enforce it as much.. or you were just unlucky with the rep you got. There are differences for sure.
However, having a main category can be a big help when you just start out. Your store will be featured in that category for 60 days in the New Studios list (if no other studios kick you out of that list earlier). That's not stated on the site anywhere, either. So it makes sense to enforce the rule, to give new studios better chances of getting sales.
If you open your studio in, let's say category a and you have 10 clips in b, c, d, -k then any customer clicking your link in "a" won't find any clips they like and just leave.
Anyway, I understand your frustration. The support person was not very empathic. This could be the beginning of something great, though. You are forced to make additional joi clips - new updates which will help your store
I thought someone mentioned in this thread that you can change your store category only ONCE, after you start your store? Has anyone done this? And what is the significance of store category anyway? (Except for the 60 day New Store exposure in said category?)
I sold my first clip! I actually saved a bottle of champagne I got in August, just for this moment. Champagne is a good motivator Let's hope it keeps up haha.
I didn't plan on the white background but I can't get background image to work. I wrote to support. Dark background with white text is not so easy on the eyes, especially for elderly people so white is better for now.
I keep running into bugs and errors, annoying and time consuming. Like one clip that doesn't go active though nothing seems wrong, banner not scheduled, gif:s that doesn't work properly even though the same gif works for the other format. Etc etc. And the store page takes around an hour or more to update. I already lost valuable exposure for example in the taboo cat when my clips never showed and then it's too late. I get you all have the same problems and it's so frustrating being a small store when every second of exposure counts.
But I also have to say, looking back at my notes with your advice from months ago when reading this thread, a lot of things are more user friendly now.
About support - I think they have to be under a lot of time stress. Several times they asked me to provide my store number to be able to help me. Well duh of course - it's just... I did. And worded no differently than when they do see it. So I think, being very short and clear and just ask one question at a time helps.
Several times I got the reply "Your email is cutting off your reply to us and we can not see it. Try resending your email to us without any special characters or text."
But there are no special characters and when I resend the exact same e-mail they see it. Anyone had this problem?
It's actually a little weird they don't have an internal messenger system, it would have to be easier and more organized than communicating with thousands of different mail servers and systems. They wouldn't have to repeatedly ask for store number and studios won't have to rely on their own e-mail accounts' limitations. Like, support wanted me to send them a clip that wouldn't work, though it is already on C4S server. It's too big to send in my e-mail and sprending etc is time consuming. Gah.
Taboo is fantasy incest and the likes, but people film it with their regular partners/performers of course (or solo like me). The fantasy comes in how it is narrated. Like "this is me and my sister having sex". But the clip itself can look vanilla.

Two more clips sold! I am so happy! And those are both the clip I like the least. I've been into fetishes most of my life and still you never really know fully what others will like right?
Totally spamming the forum today, hope you don't mind haha.
right I think I'm gonna do it, if I post mine could people have a look? I'm really bad at design but I wanna play around with it and see if it can help my sales, I dont have a main cat as such atm as I'm playing around with different stuff to see whats good
(also my clips aren't like - super HD, I'm saving for a good camera so using my logitech webcam for now)
(my store: http://clips4sale.com/111662)
I just got a reply that my banner wasn't in rotation because the size limit is 25k (!). My banner sized 1,9 mb works fine for the studio page so how can one know? Another thing I haven't seen anywhere so note that if you have banner problems.
About the "5 clips has to be studio main category" - I totally understand that they need to keep it organized for customers to find what they are looking for. It's reasonable. But why not state that somewhere so people don't make and upload clips they can't start with. I only knew it bc I read it here or on Sinnas blog.
I swear I put mine as fetish and I dont have any specifically "fetish" clips? or is fetish general enough that they dont enforce it?
I actually don't think design matters that much here (especially since the top banner is hidden anyway) The design just needs to get the job done, and most important is that it works. Tainton for example has really bad design, compared to webdesign ideal. Porn and C4S really is a world of it's own...
If you put your banner in rotation (recommended), make sure it is 468x72 pixels (and apparently, less than 25 k) The banners are tiny in rotation, so choose only 1-3 good pics that are blown up and not too detailed, and have your text in the biggest size possible or it might not be readable.
The pink color fits your store, but like I stated earlier, some color combos are harder to read, and that makes a big difference for how long people care to read it. For people with lesser eyesight it's crucial. A softer pink, a light pink with black text, or only having bright color on the side bars would be easier to read
thank you! I found my first burping clip did well so the shy angle for my second seemed like a way to make it "different" I guess haha
I really love that yours is so like, has a theme running through it - some of the ideas are ace to gratz I reckon you'll do really well xx
i have a lot of incredibly cruel videos (1999-2002 years) in 320*240 resolution, but noone want to buy them because of very-very bad quality
please place emphasis on purchase of the good camera
and i have no right to deceive buyers selling 1920*1080 clips to them
i use resolutions 1600*900, 1408*792, 1280*720 and 960*540 and i feel honest
when i use 4k digital camera i can sale up to 2560*1440
Before you go crazy about the resolution: Ever since the changes, where they added the resolution to the description, we can look around and see other stores' resolutions. First thing I noticed was that Tara Tainton, who has been sitting on #1 for most of "my c4s life" is shooting in 720x404. Which was surprising to me at first, but really, resolution is not a real issue. I sell a lot of my "bad" resolution because the file size is smaller or the customers computer is not good enough to play hd. It's hard to believe that someone spends $100 on clips a month but has a 15 year old computer, but I have made that experience more than once.
Pixiiegirl, please do not believe what he said about 50% of what sells a clip being resolution. As Sinna says, Tara Tainton shoots in really low resolution (404p) and Xev Bellringer never goes higher than 720p. Go look at the top 10 clip stores, I just checked and only 2 are in 1080p. Some are as low as 404p, 560p etc. The idea that resolution is 50% of what makes a clip sell is utterly and completely false.
oh wow okay, I have had others tell me whats in the clip is more important as long as its not like unwatchable quality haha
I should probably just learn to make gifs so I dont have to use the inbuilt gif maker tbf hahaha
thank you everyone I love this thread I've learnt SO much and am getting sales more frequently by applying the stuff talked about
love you guys <3
I know with consistent work, talent and authenticity it's achievable.
