My philosophy is the old adage of 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

If your present phone or computer equipment does all that you need it to do, and it's fast enough and reliable enough......what's the point of upgrading, just for the hell of it..?

Hell yes upgrade! Back up first cos all my apps disappeared (they're all backed up on my Mac). iCloud, reminders, friggin brilliant! You can send iMessages to other iPhone users for free (just like paid text messages, buy come up blue instead of green), and if you have an iPad you can send these iMessages to iPhones. I am such a Mac freak, this upgrade is awesome, almost like having a new toy! And best of all, my screen's stopped freezing (you ever get it when a call comes in and you any answer it cos the screen is frozen?). Well, this update seems to have fixed that problem. So upgrade, just sync your phone first. It takes a while to download and install, so get it going when you have the time to let it download/install. You'll love it, especially if you have other apple products cos this os let's all your devices sync over the air. Love it

It's a free software upgrade, not a new piece of equipment you have to dish out cash for.

Upgraded to iOS 5. Took over an hour but the functionality looks great. OK, my itch to get the iPhone 4S is gone. YAY! I saved money.

I upgraded and it wiped out my entire selection of apps on my iPhone. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it at all possible to recover that inventory? I mean, I prolly had over $100 in apps (not to mention all the history) just disappear. Huge bummer.

I was also half-asleep when I did it, though, too. Maybe I fucked something up, in the process.

But yeah, I guess its okay. I can't tell a huge difference but I certainly don't need an iPhone 4s, to keep up.

I'm not an Apple genius but usually your apps are backed up to iTunes before an upgrade. I was half-asleep when I did this last night too and I could have easily made a mistake. If, for some reason, your apps were not backed up, you should be able to re-download them from the App store at no charge as it was previously paid for, provided that you download using the same iTunes account.
