Default If you've cut out sugar...

What are some suggestions you have for a person addicted to sugar cutting it out of their diet?

I'm going to start cutting out white, refined sugar (not naturally occuring sugar, like in fruit). My dermatologist suggested it for to see if it helps with my acne.

What are some problems you've had? Some things you've noticed work best for you? Some tips, do's and don't's?

    Thanks!

i've dramatically cut down on sugar but for different reasons so i'm not sure all my tips would apply to you. For one, I found that only cutting out white, refined sugar wasn't enough. I also cut out fruits that have high amounts of naturally occuring sugar like bananas. you can find full lists online. I basically stick to green apples, lemons and berries for my fruit (berries can be high sugar but they are also anti-fungal which is the reason i went on a low sugar diet in the first place). Make sure you are cutting out carbs which just turn into sugar. also avoid alcohol.
My biggest problem was obvious: I was craving sugar. I needed something sweet. I was specifically craving chocolate. I tried carob as an alternative and stevia which i'm not crazy for. Also, I put cinnamon on everything. doesn't help that much though. Instead of cold turkey I would cut out as much as possible and have just a little sugar every now and then (not everyday). good luck!

Purchase some raw cookbooks off amazon. Fruit, dates, nuts are used instead.

I'm also a total sugar addict. I've cut out sugar a couple of times though for various reasons and for me the best way to go was cold turkey except for the sugar in my coffee. (I only have one cup of coffee a day so it's not too much sugar.)

Personally I take a birth control called Diane-35 for acne. I know most birth controls are supposed to help with acne but they don't normally do anything for me. Diane is different: it's actually not indicated solely for birth control...it is primarily meant for acne but has the side-benefit of being a birth control. It also has much fewer side effects than most birth controls (no weight gain etc). It might be worth checking out. For me it completely changes the quality of my skin, and how I feel about myself, for the better. It's very expensive though, at least in Canada. It's about $40/month and is not covered by my normal medical coverage.

    Hope that helps :-)

I had to cut down on sugar years ago due to allergies etc. I've never been a big sweet tooth, so it wasn't such a struggle for me, but sugar seems to be in everything from cereal to vitamin water these days so it can be difficult. Most drinks contain a lot of sugar, so you could always swap coffee & soda etc for green/herbal teas, drink sparking water with lemon instead of soda, & opt for a vodka lime soda or a gin & tonic instead of other mixed drinks while at work or socializing. I found that snacking on fruit (fresh, as dried fruit contains a lot of sugar) tames cravings i.e. grapes, blueberries etc (they are very sweet & snack size). Heath stores also stock a lot of sugar free options like sweets, carob etc.

I've cut down on processed sugar (and eat fruit in moderation).

I do tend to crave something sweet especially after dinner and try to drink sugar free hot chocolate or eat a low sugar yoghurt to satisfy that sweet craving (and avoid binging). Also I've found it's all or nothing. If I break the diet and eat something sweet, like a chocolate bar, all I want is sugar and its harder to go back to the low sugar diet.

I'm on a Low G.I. diet and have very little sugar in my diet. The best way to go is cold turkey since the sugar itself is what is addictive. You WILL have cravings but the longer you are without it, the easier it is. Keeping it in your diet is silly - you won't have crazy withdrawl like on heroin... you'll just crave something sweet! Weening yourself off is unnecessary.

look up low g.i. fruits, go shopping with a low g.i. list and always have your cupboards stocked with treats and snacks that are low g.i. It's the only thing that will save you from caving.

keep in mind that if you do cave and buy something / eat something not in your diet. It's not the end of the world but you will go back into craving and you should try to avoid it at all costs.

I was at the point where I was eating an assortment of candy bars for breakfast and dinner. I had to quit cold turkey because nothing else worked and my candy eating kept getting worse. I also quit eating pasta at the time because for me it seemed like one made me crave the other. Sometimes when I really wanted sugar I'd put dehydrated lemon in a bottle of water and that really helped a lot.
It took about 2 months to stop craving it but now I can't even stand the taste anymore. I don't put jelly on my toast or anything because that cloying sweetness is too much anymore; it makes my stomach turn.

I can eat chocolate bars from time to time but they have this "ugh this is sooo sweet" taste and I can't stand the ones that are super rich. It's like they were ruined for me when I quit. It's a treat but it's just like. this is sugar.

I absolutely cannot drink soda and don't really understand how anyone can drink it let alone lots of it every day!

My hub and I have done this since March- Read the quit plan and it will tell you how to cut out the sugars, how to find hidden sugars in food, and how to detox.

The recipes in the back of the book and on his online site are soo tasty when you've detoxed and reverted to normal blood sugar level. It was def. worth doing

Again, different reasons: I'm loving RAW sugar, so tasty, and when most things need sweetening I add a dash of juice, usually mango or pear (or both!), or sweet rice flour especially for sauces and the like.

Going organic was ultimately easiest, since it mostly happened as a side-effect of gluten-intolerance. Nothing that requires more processing than baking or canning or stir-frying

Don't forget about carbs! In the bloodstream, simple carbs convert to sugar very quickly. You want to stick to whole grains and other complex carbs.

Fruits and veggies are simple carbs, but most are ok because the high fiber spreads out the sugar absorption. Although, take care to avoid potatoes!

could you claim it on your tax return ie. clear skin for work not the birth control

Cold turkey is the only way that has worked for me, and even then I still struggle. By cold turkey I mean not only no refined sugar, but nothing sweet at all AND no refined carbs. I even avoid most fruits; I try to stick to nuts, meats and veggies.

I found that once I started avoiding sugar (2-3 weeks) my taste buds changed. The first few weeks sucked though and I still crave chocolate now and again - I'll make stevia-cocoa-coconut oil brittle if its REALLY bad because I can tailor how sweet it is but on a day-to-day basis I just stopped wanting sweet things.

I had a cheat day once a week, but that's slowly cut down to half a day/one cheat meal every few weeks. Its been a constant battle and its something I still have to think about all the time.

Sugar is my bane, I am addicted to it. Currently I've stopped eating it again and cold turkey is the best way. I'm the type who will eat bags of candy at a time, so I am concerned that not stopping might one day lead to insulin resistance or diabetes. Not to mention it ages you like a mofo and actually changes your make up on a cellular level.

The easiest way for me is to stay busy, especially at night.

Check out this link for info on herbs to stop sugar cravings. I haven't tried them yet but am thinking about heading to the health food store to see if they carry them.

One thing to also avoid is anything with aspartame (which is nearly every diet soda, though diet rite and diet coke with splenda does not have it). The reason is that this sends the same signals to your body as if sugar was coming, and then your body does not get sugar and the cravings become more intense.

I cut processed sugars out of my diet years ago. Food tastes so much better now. One thing to realize is that really, you just want to make sure that processed sugar is not in the first 4 ingredients. If it is further down, it won't matter to your sugar craving. So, Cheerios are fine to each as it meets that criteria.

Limit your over all carb intakes when it comes to bread. If I ate bread, too much anyway, then I would want a candy bar, or chocolate... anything as long as it was sweet. For me, when the sweet cravings were more than I could bare, a frozen fruit bar would quench the craving.

Default Re: If you've cut out sugar...

I read this and have been thinking...I have really intense sugar cravings sometimes and even though I only act on them sometimes, it kind of drives me crazy that I'll sit for hours reading and watching tv just waiting for the store to close because then I won't have access to stripper cookies, i.e. these, and the urges abate a little because I don't have access:

Anyway, I was looking for Candida Clear like one of the posters suggested and Amazon was going to take too long, and the health food store had them more expensive than I'd like-- So I grabbed some samples of Digest Spectrum:
    http://www.amazon.com/Enzymedica-Dig...9366371&sr=8-1

These are enzymes to help digest problematic food, and I've always thought that I didn't really have any sensitivities unless I had like massive amounts of milk or ice cream (though, strangely, not cheese.) So I thought what the hell, especially after reading the reviews. On the one hand, maybe it'll alleviate some guilt with eating "bad" food, but then again, if I'm going to eat bad anyway, I may as well be able to process it better (and maybe that's another reason why I feel so full today? I don't know.)

However, thinking about candida throwing a wrench in my system and making me CRAVE things almost against my will-- I started thinking about parasites. I have some Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth given to me but never used.

Anyway, my point is, I've gone a couple days (more like a day and a half) and I don't want sugar. And, actually, I'm not really hungry at all. Partially that has to be all the water I'm drinking as I mix a spoon of DE in a big 20 oz glass of water, and then after finishing that quickly, slowly drink another 20 oz glass of water.

Today, I had a big bowl of cereal with almond milk, an apple, and a small tupperware container of plain yogurt with some cereal mixed in for crunch. That and a few spoons of blackstrap molasses to help make me poop (DE constipates if you're not careful.) I'm the type of girl who can have two burgers and a side of fries or one and a half burgers when I'm actually being conscientious about stopping when full. I can also eat a large pizza from Dominos and only start to feel full when there's only two pieces left, though I can eat those and not get that gross overfull feeling and that's just for one, albeit the main one of the day, meal-- so compare that to today's eating (not that I eat that crappy food everyday, but a few times a week easy) that's RATHER unusual.

Bottom line is, I don't know what's going on-- I feel a difference but it's probably going to take a couple of days until I see if it's consistent enough to figure out that it's really due to the enzymes and DE.

I am curious though because I just read about Bromelein (enzyme in pineapple) kicking parasites butts, which is definitely preferable to eating garlic and smelling like garlic all the time. Luckily, a costco's opening near me and three pounds of ready cut DELICIOUS pineapple is like eight or nine dollars (used to buy it all the time years ago) so I'm already thinking about resuming my love affair with pineapple

Sorry to confuse the issue. I realize Candida is a yeast (sometimes fungus) but there have been too many times where I really felt like my urges were controlling me, or making me want stuff that I knew wasn't even going to taste that good a couple of bites in, to not think that Candida is a lot like a parasite.

Here's hoping I lose a lot of weight!!! Not to mention be more content and not more apt to depression and negative mood swings. I know my boyfriend would appreciate that.

Feindish Gyrator - Diatomaceous Earth - I LOVE that stuff and take it every day! It's awesome for cravings and make hair grow in ridiculously fast. Plus it gets rid of parasites too and makes my skin baby soft.

I started doing parsnips mixed in my mashed potatoes, like two parsnips to one potato. Amazingly tasty, and better for you.

oh thank god! I've moved to a place where the water is TRASHING my hair, so I hope this makes it grow in face.

How much have you been taking? I've been doing a tablespoon to a rounded tablespoon in 20 oz followed by another 20 oz, twice a day. On the one hand, if I have die out, it might be better to up the amount so long as I can control the constipating factors with blackstrap molasses. On the other hand, I don't want to be so silly as to think more of a good thing would be better when actually it could be worse.

I wonder why it makes hair grow fast. I also read it makes nails harder.

Now if only DE could stop my body hair from growing in, cure blackheads, and be the cure for undereye circles!
Actually I'm going to mix a little in with my coffee scrub. My face is getting atrocious with little bumps, so my plan is to mix
honey, olive oil, coffee grounds, blackstrap, and a little DE and tumeric and do a scrub/mask. We'll see how it goes!

Sorry if a bit off-topic from main topic of thread,

Fiendishgyrator, try getting a shower head that has a water purifier in it that removes the hard water stuff (minerals). Usually hard water is a problem out in the midwest or wherever else.

Pipermonroe, what brand of D.Earth do you use? Thanks!

I wonder if D.E. can be bad for you if you have too much of it (like damage your kidneys or liver). I couldn't find anything online about it exccept that it's important to eat the food-quality D.E. (not the stuff you buy at a garden store to be used for lawns or livestock).
